Arsenal targeting £80m "nightmare" who'd be more exciting than Zubimendi

The transfer window may be closing for six days this afternoon, but that won’t stop Arsenal from working on potential deals.

Mikel Arteta’s side finished second in the Premier League for the third time on the bounce this season, and while they managed to make it to the semi-finals of the Champions League, that’ll only fuel the team’s hunger to finally get over the line next year.

The Gunners have been linked to a host of talented players in recent weeks and months, but the one who looks closest to putting pen to paper and moving to North London is Martin Zubimendi.

Yet, as brilliantly talented as the Spaniard is, there is now another international linked with Arsenal, who’d be an even more exciting signing.

Arsenal transfer news

Amazingly, the first reports linking Arsenal to Zubimendi appeared all the way back in January 2023, and while they became a little stronger last summer, they really took off this January.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It was at the start of this year that Sami Mokbel claimed that the Real Sociedad star would be making his way to the Emirates at some point this summer, but since then, there has been some concern among fans that Real Madrid could turn his head.

After all, there has been no shortage of publications from the midfielder’s homeland claiming that Los Blancos would convince him to turn his back on Arteta and join up with Xabi Alonso.

Fortunately, that all seems to be nothing more than paper talk, as respected journalist David Ornstein revealed this morning that the powers that be at the Emirates consider the move to be “done & signed.” At the same time, Real sources claim that the Spanish giants never truly pursued the player.

In yet more good news, the Gunners have now also been linked to another international star, someone who’d be a more exciting acquisition than Zubimendi: Anthony Gordon.

Yes, according to Ornstein’s latest report for The Athletic, the Gunners are now interested in the Newcastle United star.

He claims that the Toon star has his ‘admirers’ at the Emirates, a claim James McNicholas backs up in the same article.

While no price is mentioned, reports from earlier this month linking the player to Liverpool claim he could cost around £80m.

It could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given Gordon’s ability, it’s one worth fighting for.

Why Gordon will be more exciting than Zubimendi

So, the first thing to say is that when Zubimendi finally makes his way to the Emirates, he will be an incredible signing for Arsenal.

After all, we saw him put in stellar performances for Spain in the semi-final and final of the Nations League, and you don’t get chased by some of the biggest clubs in the world if you aren’t someone special.

However, when it comes down to pure excitement, there is one massive reason why Gordon would provide more of it in North London: his output.

At the end of the day, fans watch football for the goals and attacking trickery which the Newcastle United star should bring to N5 in abundance.

For example, in 48 appearances last season, totalling 3869 minutes, the former Everton star managed to score 12 goals and provide 16 assists, which came out to a superb average of a goal involvement every 1.71 games, or every 138.17 minutes.

Even this year, when he’s not been at his very best, the dynamic “nightmare,” as he described himself, scored nine goals and provided seven assists in 42 appearances, totalling 2946 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.62 games, or every 184.12 minutes.

Ultimately, while Zubimendi will almost certainly help Arsenal tick and will likely help kickstart plenty of attacks from the base of midfield, it’s Gordon who’ll either finish them or help them along by taking on opposition defenders and getting the fans on their feet.

Therefore, while he won’t be cheap, the club should do all they can to sign the Newcastle star this summer, as he’d be a tremendously exciting addition to the team.

What's the highest fourth-innings target ever?

Also, what’s the record for most left-arm fast bowlers picked in an ODI XI?

Steven Lynch29-Jan-2019Roston Chase took eight wickets in the second innings of the Barbados Test – are his the best figures by someone who didn’t bowl in the first innings? asked Shyam from Australia

That remarkable return of 8 for 60 by Roston Chase in Bridgetown at the weekend were indeed the best Test bowling figures by someone who didn’t bowl in the opposition’s first innings. The previous best was 7 for 28 by the Australian offspinner Hugh Trumble, against England in Melbourne in 1903-04. That was Trumble’s final Test appearance: England had been shot out for 61 in their first innings. The England slow left-armer Johnny Wardle took 7 for 56 against Pakistan at The Oval in 1954, after not being called on in their first innings of 133. In all there have now been 20 instances of a bowler taking five or more wickets in the second innings of a Test, having not bowled in the first.Chase’s figures were the sixth-best for West Indies in all Tests, and the fourth-best by a West Indian spinner, after Jack Noreiga (9 for 95 in 1970-71), Lance Gibbs (8 for 38 in 1961-62) and Devendra Bishoo (8 for 49 in 2016-17).Was that amazing stand between Jason Holder and Shane Dowrich the biggest for the seventh wicket in a Test? asked Showkat Baksh from Guyana

The partnership of 295 between Shane Dowrich and Jason Holder for West Indies in Bridgetown last week was actually the third-highest for the seventh wicket in Tests – although it was the highest unbroken stand, so they might have been able to beat the record if they had needed a few more runs. Since West Indies were already 627 ahead, they didn’t really require any more! The highest seventh-wicket partnership in Tests also involved the West Indian captain and wicketkeeper at the time, and was in Barbados too: skipper Denis Atkinson, who made 219, added 347 with Clairmonte Depeiaza (122) against Australia in Bridgetown in May 1955. Five months later, in Lahore, Waqar Hasan and Imtiaz Ahmed put on 308 for Pakistan’s seventh wicket against New Zealand. Imtiaz’s 209 in that innings was one of only two scores higher than Holder’s by a No. 8: Wasim Akram hammered 257 not out for Pakistan against Zimbabwe in Sheikhupura in 1996-97.West Indies left England 628 to win in Barbados. Was this the highest fourth-innings target ever in a Test? asked Kyle Houghton from Australia

England’s target of 628 in Bridgetown was preceded the previous month by New Zealand setting Sri Lanka 660 to win in the Boxing Day Test in Christchurch. They were all out for 236, so lost by 423 runs. There have been 11 higher fourth-innings targets in all Tests. The biggest of all remains 836, set by England’s captain Freddie Calthorpe against West Indies in Kingston in 1929-30. That was a timeless Test, which explains why Calthorpe, whose side had run up 849 in their first innings (a record at the time, and still the third-largest Test innings of all), batted again despite a lead of 563. The match lasted nine days, but still ended in a draw – West Indies were about halfway to their target, at 408 for 5 in their second innings, when England had to leave to catch the boat home after two days were washed out.Yuzvendra Chahal’s 6 for 42 were the joint-best ODI bowling figures in Australia•Getty ImagesHas anyone had better one-day figures against Australia than Yuzvendra Chahal’s 6 for 42 the other day? asked Bharat Sriram from India

Yuzvendra Chahal’s 6 for 42 in the ODI in Melbourne last week were the joint-seventh-best figures against Australia in one-day internationals. The list is headed by the West Indian fast bowler Winston Davis, who claimed 7 for 51 at Headingley during the 1983 World Cup. Chahal’s feat was actually the 50th five-for against Australia in ODIs.Chahal’s figures equalled the best by any bowler in an ODI in Australia: another Indian, Ajit Agarkar, also took 6 for 42 against Australia in Melbourne in 2003-04.Pakistan recently played three left-arm pacemen in an ODI against South Africa. Has this happened before? asked Pranav Thiagarajan from India

Pakistan’s pace attack in yesterday’s one-day international against South Africa in Johannesburg was made up of three left-armers: Usman Shinwari, Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Amir. This is not terribly rare: a quick search throws up no fewer than 51 instances of a side fielding three left-arm quicks in an ODI, 22 by Pakistan, 15 by India, nine by Australia and five by New Zealand. But I can find only one instance of a team choosing four left-arm seamers in the same game: Pakistan did it against New Zealand in Auckland in 2015-16, when they unleashed Amir, Mohammad Irfan, Rahat Ali and Wahab Riaz. Pakistan lost by three wickets, which perhaps is why they haven’t done it again.Use our feedback form or the Ask Steven Facebook page to ask your stats and trivia questions

Wellington Storms to 83 in crashing win over Sparks

Three wickets each to Chloe Skelton, Issy Wong seal 182-run victory

ECB Reporters Network12-Jul-2024Western Storm climbed off the foot of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy table with a 182-run smashing of Central Sparks which relegated their opponents to the bottom instead.Storm were lifted to an imposing 284 all out from 49.5 overs at Worcester by a dazzling 83 from 53 balls from Amanda-Jade Wellington. The Aussie struck 14 fours and two sixes and took the innings to an impregnable level with a sixth-wicket stand of 102 in 14 overs with captain Sophie Luff (60). Katie George did most to disrupt the run-fest with 5 for 50 including an exceptional caught and bowled.Sparks then started disastrously, losing wickets to the first two balls of their reply, delivered by their own Issy Wong who is on loan to Storm. From there they floundered to 102 all out, only Davina Perrin (42) passing 20 as Chloe Skelton took 3 for 8 and Wong 3 for 20.Sparks had chosen to bowl but waited 88 balls for a breakthrough as openers Emma Corney (39) and Sophia Smale (42) added 92. They struck a combined 11 fours and set down an ideal platform before falling in the space of four balls. Smale chipped Ria Fackrell to mid off before Corney was bowled, playing back to spinner Hannah Baker. After Luff and Fran Wilson added another half-century stand – 53 in 11 overs – Sparks hit back with three wickets in seven overs. Wilson was bowled off her pads by Bethan Ellis, Natasha Wraith hoisted Ellis to deep mid-wicket and Niamh Holland had her off-stump knocked out by George. At 164 for 5, the innings was in the balance but Wellington injected impetus alongside the steady Luff with a vibrant 41-ball half-century including a six, hoisted over midwicket off Fackrell, and eight fours.Luff fell to a stunning, one-handed return catch by George but Wellington continued her assault until she was dismissed in bizarre fashion when she missed a reverse-sweep at Grace Potts and the ball lodged in the visor of wicketkeeper Abi Freeborn to be caught behind.Sparks’ reply started terribly with wickets to the first two balls from Wong as Eve Jones was yorked and Freeborn edged a loose drive to wicketkeeper Wraith. At 0 for 2 from 0.2 overs, a case could have been made for a third slip and had there been one, Wong would have had a hat-trick. Instead, Perrin survived but though she batted well, the rest subsided ignominiously.Chloe Brewer was lbw to Wong to one that kept low and Alex Griffiths added the wickets of Courtney Webb and Katie George, both caught at mid on. When Perrin departed aghast at an interesting lbw decision for Wellington, it was 85 for 6 and the lower order needed to deliver a miracle. There was no miracle as Skelton came on to torpedo the tail with a burst of 3 for 6 in 26 balls as the Storm blew strong, rather belatedly in the competition, to leave Sparks bottom of the pile.

Lammonby's 90 heads contributions as Somerset open up lead over Kent

Kent and Somerset look to be heading for a draw in the Vitality County Championship at Canterbury after the visitors reached 374 for 7 at stumps on day three.Tom Lammonby hit 90 and Matt Renshaw 66 as the visitors survived an early evening wobble to overhaul Kent’s first innings score of 284. Kent debutants Matt Parkinson and George Garrett took 2 for 116 and 2 for 61 respectively, but a stand of 101 between Kasey Aldridge and James Rew gave Somerset a potentially useful lead of 90.Aldridge was unbeaten on 50 while Rew made 57 before he was out in surreal circumstances following a delay caused by a rogue mobilty-scooter.The draw always looked the most likely outcome after 119 overs were lost to the elements on days one and two, but if Kent were going to force the issue they needed to exploit the new ball. They couldn’t. Sean Dickson was on four when he edged Wes Agar between second and third slip, but both Daniel Bell-Drummond and Jack Leaning went for the catch and neither managed to hang on.Dickson failed to cash in, edging Garrett to Leaning for 17, but that was the only bright moment for the hosts during an otherwise joyless morning session that ended with Somerset on 108 for 1.Lammonby played with restrained elegance, although he reached his fifty with a streakily edged four off Garrett.Renshaw was then dropped on 58 off Parkinson when Joe Denly couldn’t hang on to a diving chance at mid on. Parkinson, however, broke through in his next over, conjuring a ball that pitched outside off and spun viscously back into Renshaw’s middle stump. If that was the only wicket of the afternoon session, Parkinson’s unbroken 25-over spell at least offered home fans hope that this season might offer something more than the toil of the previous campaign. He lobbed in the occasional bad ball but always looked like making something happen and, in the second over after tea, he duped Lammonby into a swipe that was grabbed by Ben Compton at square leg.A mini-collapse ensued as Tom Banton smacked Garrett for six but was caught behind off the next ball for 28 and Lewis Goldsworthy fell to the new ball, driving Nathan Gilchrist to Joey Evison at extra cover for 35.Lewis Gregory made just one when he cut Wes Agar to Daniel Bell-Drummond and at that point Somerset were on 255 for 6. But Aldridge and Rew exploited some average fielding to push Somerset into the lead and give them their first score of over 300 in the first innings of a summer since 2014.The torpor of the late evening was summed up when a man on a mobility scooter dawdled in front of the sight screens and Rew fell to the very next ball, skying Leaning almost vertically before he was caught by Harry Finch.Aldridge then brought up his half-century when he took a single off the final ball of the day from Leaning.

'Nothing that I could've ever imagined' – Starc reacts to becoming the costliest IPL auction buy

Mitchell Starc was “jittery” on Tuesday evening as he followed the IPL 2024 auction at his home in Sydney. It had already been a busy day for Starc: he had mowed the lawn, walked the dogs, done his shopping rounds and made himself dinner.Starc waited anxiously for his name to come up for bidding in the fourth set comprising capped fast bowlers. His Australia captain and friend Pat Cummins had already gone to Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 20.5 crore (US$2.569 mn approx.), surpassing the record set by England allrounder Sam Curran at the 2023 auction to become the IPL’s most expensive player ever.Related

That distinction, several pundits and franchises heads had believed in the lead-up to the auction, would belong to Starc. Nearly two-and-a-half hours into the auction in Dubai, player Number 28’s name came up for bidding: Starc.Starc and everyone else following the auction wouldn’t believe what was about to transpire. Mumbai Indians owner Akash Ambani and his counterpart at Delhi Capitals, Kiran Gandhe, started the bidding. At the INR 9.4 crore mark, Gandhe pulled out. Enter Kolkata Knight Riders at the INR 9.8 crore mark. The Knight Riders had been favorites to bid for Starc on the eve of the auction. After all, they had signed him for INR 9.4 crore at the 2018 auction, but Starc had to pull out due to injury. After Mumbai, too, dropped out, Gujarat Titans locked into a bidding contest with Knight Riders. Several tense minutes followed as both franchises raised their bidding towards Cummins’ price tag. The auction room let out a sigh of excitement when Starc surpassed Cummins. Finally, after nearly 17 minutes of bidding, Knight Riders had Starc at INR 24.75 crore. The most expensive player tag had moved from Cummins to Starc in less than two hours.Starc was as gobsmacked as his wife Alyssa Healy, who was relaying updates from Mumbai where she is part of the Australia women’s tour of India, which starts with a one-off Test this week. In a chat with , Starc said he had been “intrigued” about how he would fare, and wasn’t prepared to end up making history.”I’m not sure any words would do it justice, really,” Starc said with a chuckle, asked to recount his reaction to Knight Riders’ winning bid. “Alyssa was over there with the Australian team at the minute, so her coverage was slightly ahead of mine here in Australia. So she sort of saw the numbers before I did, so I was getting the updates through her. But, yeah, a fair bit of shock, and certainly excitement with how it was all unfolding. But nothing that I could’ve ever imagined. Thoroughly thrilled to be joining KKR.”Starc has played only two seasons of the IPL – in 2014 and 2015, at Royal Challengers Bangalore, who had picked him up at INR 5 crore. He then decided to manage his workload for a few years before deciding to enter the auction ahead of the 2018 season. Even then the Knight Riders had bet big money on Starc who they believe has all the skills to be a serial match-winner. These included his ability to bowl in the 140-150 kph range while generating conventional and reverse swing, flooring batters and breaking stumps with toe-crushing yorkers, mix things up with a wicked slower ball, all this with the added threat of his left-arm angle, as well as provide depth to their batting with his lower-order hitting.Unfortunately, Starc hurt his tibia, ruling him out of the 2018 season. But six seasons later, Starc is happy to play in Knight Riders’ colours. “Firstly, it’s exciting to be back involved,” he said. “Secondly, it’s more of a bit of a shock and a surprise, I guess.”The Knight Riders had come to the auction with a remaining purse of 32.7 crore with the most slots to fill of any team – 12 including four overseas players. As soon as the auction began, they got to work by raising their paddle for West Indies allrounder Rovman Powell, who ended up going to Rajasthan Royals. The Knight Riders would eventually walk out with 10 new signings.0:34

Healy: IPL record buy a justification for Starc’s choices

Incredibly, the nine others apart from Starc were all signed at their base price. As Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore said after acquiring Starc, you can “slice” the purse in different ways. But how do you make sense of a team spending INR 24.75 crore, or 75.69 % of the purse they started the auction with, on a single player? Starc was laughing himself. “They are amazing numbers, aren’t they?” He understands the pressure and expectatins that will come with the price tag as soon as the season begins. But he has qualities not many possess: vast experience, and the experience of winning World Cups in high-pressure situations. “I’m 33 now, so I’ve had to deal with a few ups and downs and pressures of certain games,” he said. “I would like to think that I can keep that in check, but that always comes with the territory when some of those numbers get added to the anticipation of an upcoming season as well.”It’s been a long time since I played in IPL in 2014 and ’15 and have obviously played a fair bit of cricket since then. A lot of it for Australia in different formats. There’s been a lot of white-ball cricket there [in India] across a few World Cup campaigns, and so that experience is there and a little bit of leadership if you like, in terms of the experience side of things in white-ball cricket that hopefully I can bring to bring to KKR as well and play my part there. And being able to bowl at different stages I think is something that’s held firm throughout.”While he sat out of the IPL, Starc never felt uneasy. His had chalked out his priorities, and had been focused on performing for Australia. He played a key role in a historic 2023, in which Australia won the World Test Championship final, retained the Ashes, and then overcame a dominant India in the final of the World Cup in front of a 90,000-plus crowd in Ahmedabad.Starc now believes he is ready for the IPL .”I’ve probably prioritised international cricket firstly for a long time whilst having a bit of a taste of IPL and Big Bash in Australia.” he said. “I’ve always held firm that I’ve wanted to play my best cricket for Australia and make myself available for Australia where I can. At the same time, the temptation to go back to IPL and how exciting it is to be involved in such a great tournament, big names, big players, big stages – it’s too hard to pass up. There’s a place to play all of it. it’s just being mindful and putting the work ethic in to be able to do all of it.”The Eden Gardens also holds good memories for Starc. On November 16, he took a three-for and then batted resolutely with Cummins in a tense chase of 213 against South Africa in the World Cup semi-finals. “I’m very much looking forward to playing as the home team and experiencing that home crowd [at Eden Gardens],” he said. “Some new colors to pull on and a new challenge to look forward to.”What can the passionate Knight Riders fan expect then from Starc? “Hopefully, more of the success that I’ve had over some time – swinging the new ball, reversing the old, and trying to smack those wickets.”As for the present, Starc is looking forward to meeting Cummins ahead of training on Wednesday as they get ready to join the rest of the Australia squad in Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan. “It could be an interesting conversation between the bowling group tomorrow and the gym,” he said, with a laugh. While he and Healy will spend the rest of 2023 indulging in a “Christmas of cricket” in different continents, Starc is happy to share the joy he and Cummins have experienced today with rest of the Australia squad. “The team chat has been going nuts,” he said. “The are all saying it’s our shout, so we’ll just go about our business and get ready for the next Test match. But a few of our Australian team-mates might be waiting for us to treat them.”

He is the premier, form batsman of the competition.”After Bancroft’s neat work in the field, Paris then returned to finish the match after tea when he took the edges of both Harry Conway and Wes Agar.WA’s other left-armer Liam Haskett took 3 for 31, while spinner Corey Rocchiccioli claimed 2 for 59 in the side’s second Shield win of the summer. The loss marked South Australia’s second defeat in three games to start the season, leaving them in fourth spot on the ladder.”It’s pretty disappointing,” coach Jason Gillespie said. “In three Shield games, we’ve had seven individual scores above 40. We just can’t keep having these performances. We need to be better.”
