Arsenal set to complete transfer for Salford wonderkid Will Wright as Premier League rivals Liverpool pull out of race after being outbid

Arsenal are set to complete the signing of 17-year-old Salford City starlet Will Wright after Liverpool dropped out of the race for the young forward.

Arsenal set to sign Salford teenager WrightAcademy manager Per Mertesacker at the centre of itLiverpool beaten in raceFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal have reportedly offered £250,000 plus add-ons for striker Wright report , blowing Liverpool's bid of £100,000 plus add-ons out of the water. Wright only made his first-team debut against Manchester City in January, making two League Two appearances at the back end of last season. His form in pre-season, where he has found the net for Salford four times, has seen the teenager hit the headlines.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

report that the signing of Wright is an example of Arsenal's new youth strategy under academy manager Per Mertesacker, who has been given a 'dedicated budget' to purchase the best youth talent. Wright comes right under that bracket and will be expected to play for Arsenal's Under-18 and Under-21 sides if he arrives in north London, with previously rumoured suitors Liverpool believed to be out of the race.

DID YOU KNOW?

Wright scored over 50 goals across age groups for Salford last season and is in the second year of a scholarship at the club, having been spotted playing for non-league sides Euxton Villa and Fylde. A move to the Emirates would therefore represent a massive step up for the young man.

AFPWHAT NEXT FOR WRIGHT AND ARSENAL?

Wright is likely to feature for Arsenal's youth sides next season and it may be a couple of years before his name is mentioned around Mikel Arteta's first-team squad. But the Gunners have offered opportunities to other youth players in recent seasons and so the teenager will hope to get his chance if he impresses at his new club.

Pant and Sarfaraz's thrilling double-act hands India B advantage

The duo helped India B finish the day on 150 for 6, leading India A by 240 runs

Shashank Kishore07-Sep-2024Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant, batters who bring daredevilry to the crease, brought a small but festive Saturday crowd to life after tea on the third day in Bengaluru. The trigger for this thrilling counter was an instinctive response to India A’s Akash Deep and Khaleel Ahmed striking early. Although India B had a 90-run first-innings lead, they were in choppy waters at 22 for 3. A contest was brewing until Pant and Sarfaraz decided to take the counterattacking route.Sarfaraz kickstarted the party by employing a method typical of him, and far different to his brother, Musheer Khan, who had just been strangled down leg for a duck to go with his epic 181 in the first innings. Musheer’s dismissal was down to Dhruv Jurel’s glove work as he dived to his left to grab a one-handed stunner.Related

Sarfaraz got his first life on zero when he drilled a half-volley that burst through substitute Tilak Varma’s hands at extra cover. It would be the start of a mini contest between Khaleel, Avesh Khan and Sarfaraz, all India Under-19 batch-mates from 2016.The fast-bowling duo were riling him up with words and friendly jibes even as Pant, also from the same batch, chuckled, perhaps knowing fully well this was probably a contest worth viewing from the other end. The friendly banter certainly seemed to get Sarfaraz’s competitive juices flowing. He would very quickly switch his focus back by hitting Akash for five fours in a row. Out came a booming drive, a rasping cut, a delicate steer, a neat tickle down leg and a wristy whip as he peppered every region of the ground from cover to point to deep third to fine leg and deep square.By this time, it felt silly to assume Pant would buckle down and enjoy the Sarfaraz show. He didn’t and, in the process, lived dangerously to begin with. A reverse scoop off Akash, reminiscent of the audacious reverse to James Anderson, flew between Jurel and KL Rahul at first slip, neither having any time to react. Then a wild heave across the line, as if he was unleashed by a free hit in a T20, went a mile high. Jurel hared all the way back towards fine leg, while yelling and gesturing to Kuldeep Yadav to get out of the way, only for the ball to just elude him. Jurel had miscalculated; the ball would have been straight down Kuldeep’s lap at fine leg.Sarfaraz Khan’s innings was studded with a number of audacious strokes•PTI

Then Pant decided to take on Khaleel’s short ball. This induced more hair-tearing frustration for the bowlers. Pant was so early into the hook shot that the ball ballooned off the gloves over the slip cordon. It left Khaleel incensed so much that you wondered what reprieving Sarfaraz off his own bowling, on 28, would elicit. There was, of course, disbelief and more frustration. Khaleel animatedly exchanged a friendly stare, followed by words and a smile. This, however, wasn’t the last of this thrill-a-minute ride. In the same over, Sarfaraz looked to whack the leather of a ball not full enough to be a half-volley or short enough to be good length. It flew off the bat, over point, for a flat six. There wasn’t much else left to say now for Khaleel.Sarfaraz was eyeing a half-century, perhaps more. In trying to keep at it, he slashed one to Jurel. Avesh, who had bantered with him earlier, leapt past Sarfaraz in celebration and gave him a send-off. Sarfaraz made 46 off 36; he had put on 72 off 55 with Pant; India B’s lead had swelled to 184. The partnership was over, but the party wasn’t.Pant went bonkers, tonking Kuldeep for a sequence of 4, 0, 6, 0, 1 to bring up a 34-ball half-century. The purity of the big hits, the conviction in taking the attack to the bowlers and simply playing without any inhibitions, like he always does, lit up a leaden afternoon. A top edge to a tame sweep off Tanush Kotian got him for 61, but he walked off knowing he had done his job.Rishabh Pant’s half-century took only 34 balls•PTI

The stunning post-tea double-act from Pant and Sarfaraz made one forget all the discussion around India’s imminent Test selection for the Bangladesh series. In any case, six Test regulars: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj aren’t playing the Duleep Trophy. Two others, Rahul and Pant, are expected to make the cut. As is Sarfaraz, most probably as a reserve batter.Until this thrilling ride, the exhibition of outstanding seam and swing bowling from all of India’s prospects who will be looked at later in the year, for India A and the Test tour to Australia, made for compelling viewing. This included those who have already played Test cricket, such as Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini and Akash, and those who haven’t – Yash Dayal and Khaleel – but are in the conversation because of their ability and the left-arm variety that India have missed.Saini and Mukesh picked up three wickets each to help India B take a lead. Khaleel and Akash struck early, and then, Pant and Sarfaraz happened.

Rangers looking at "outstanding" English coach who's better than Gerrard

When will Rangers unveil their new manager at Ibrox?

On Saturday, the Gers concluded their generally miserable campaign at Easter Road, held to a 2-2 draw, with top-scorer Cyriel Dessers and Rangers Player of the Season Nicolas Raskin on target in Edinburgh.

As Scottish Premiership runners-up, the Light Blues will start next season early with a Champions League second qualifying round tie on 22 or 23 July, currently projected to face one of Brann from Norway, Swiss side Servette or Austria Vienna.

Thus, with that first leg a mere 62 days away already, 49ers Enterprises are under pressure to appoint a new Rangers manager very quickly, so who is on their shortlist?

Rangers' new manager search

According to a report by Sky Sports News, six men are ‘under consideration’ to become the new Rangers manager.

They are: Steven Gerrard, Davide Ancelotti, Russell Martin, Rob Edwards, Danny Röhl and Gary O’Neil.

Ever since it was confirmed that his father, Carlo, will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, becoming the new Brazil manager, it has been widely reported, including by Madrid-based outlet AS, that Davide is one of the front-runners to land the Rangers job.

Meantime, Gerrard remains one of the leading candidates too, with Mike McGrath of the Telegraph documenting how the 49ers have held a longstanding interest in bringing the Englishman back to Ibrox.

Of the six names mentioned, only Röhl is currently employed by a club, and he is ‘considering’ leaving Sheffield Wednesday, as reported by David Ornstein of the Athletic, but Rangers should not go for him, nor Gerrard nor Ancelotti, with another member of the short list making the most sense.

Who Rangers should appoint as their new manager

Rob Edwards may be a name unfamiliar to a large majority of the Rangers support, but he could be an excellent appointment.

Let’s have a look at the 42-year-old’s senior managerial career so far.

Edwards’ biggest career achievement to date is, without question, leading Luton Town into the Premier League which was a miraculous achievement.

The Hatters were relegated after one season in the top-flight, before Edwards departed by mutual consent back in January of this year, with the club actually going on to suffer a second successive relegation, now finding themselves in EFL League One.

Nevertheless, this should take away from Edwards’ impact at Kenilworth Road, with journalist James Cunliffe noting that he did an “outstanding” job at Luton, while Mark Ogden of ESPN praises his “ultra-positive” style of play, something that would no doubt go down well with those at Ibrox.

Meantime, Exeter City midfielder Edward Francis, who played for Edwards at youth level, praised his exceptional “man-management” and “communication skills”, adding “he always treats people well and is honest with them”.

So, Edwards is clearly a young manager on the up, which is in contrast to Gerrard.

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

The 44-year-old’s time at Aston Villa was disastrous, as documented by Gregg Evans of the Athletic, while he was then also sacked by Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq back in January following an underwhelming 18-month stint in the Middle East.

So, Gerrard’s last two managerial jobs do not suggest he is the right man for the Ibrox dugout, although he was successful during his first stint in Govan, delivering the club’s first Premiership title for a decade, historically ending Celtic’s quest for ten-in-a-row.

So, reappointing Gerrard would probably be the safe option, as he is a known quantity in Glasgow, but the 49ers should be braver and hire an up-and-coming coach with the potential to get even better, and Edwards certainly fits that bill.

Rangers can forget Ancelotti by hiring manager who's a "joy to watch"

Rangers must move on from Davide Ancelotti to appoint this British head coach.

Berta expected to sign one of £125m duo for Arsenal – David Ornstein

Arsenal to have "at least" £100 million to spend this summer

Arsenal are already closing in on the signing of Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi (Fabrizio Romano), who is poised to end his spell at boyhood club Real Sociedad by sealing a switch to the Premier League, and £51 million of Berta’s transfer kitty looks set to be splashed on the 26-year-old.

The north Londoners also wish to sign a new second-choice keeper, defender, winger and striker over the coming months (GiveMeSport), with Arsenal holding talks over signing Real Madrid star Rodrygo in the last two weeks.

Arsenal could be set for a very busy summer, but one position which supporters are very keen to see addressed is centre-forward.

Arteta’s side struggled to finish teams off throughout 2024/2025, and scored far fewer Premier League goals than usual, ending the campaign with just 69 strikes in the top flight compared to 91 and 88 in the previous two seasons.

Serious injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus undoubtedly contributed, but there is an ongoing argument that a more prolific striker has been the missing piece of Arteta’s jigsaw for quite some time now.

Despite links to other high-profile number nines, like Atlético Madrid star Julian Alvarez, it is reliably reported that RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko and Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres are Arsenal’s top two striker targets.

There are even suggestions that Berta and Arteta are in disagreement over who they should seriously pursue (Simon Phillips), with “concrete” Arsenal talks held over a move for Sesko and reports in Portugal claiming a move for Gyokeres is also quite advanced.

David Ornstein expects Arsenal to sign Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko

Sesko’s deal includes a £62 million release clause, while Gyokeres will reportedly be allowed to depart Sporting for around £63 million.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskoheads at goal

Both men have enjoyed prolific campaigns for the respective clubs, with the latter bagging 53 goals in all competitions and the former scoring 21.

Ornstein, speaking on NBC Sports (via GMS), is expecting one of the £125 million duo to make the move to N5 this summer, with Arsenal seemingly set for one of their biggest transfer calls in recent memory.

“They’ve got a decision to make between Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig and Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting Lisbon, both fantastic options and talents,” said Ornstein.

“I do expect one of them to come into the Emirates Stadium this summer.”

Man Utd told they have 'overburdened' Marcus Rashford as wantaway attacker is backed to shine if Barcelona transfer comes to fruition by former Red Devil

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha accused the Red Devils of overburdening Marcus Rashford as he backed the United outcast to shine in La Liga if Barcelona come calling. Rashford left Old Trafford in January to join Aston Villa on a short-term loan deal. The attacker is now back in Manchester but is expected to leave his boyhood club permanently.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Premier League legend Saha has backed the English forward to shine in Spain if the Blaugrana decide to sign him this summer. The Frenchman also accused his ex-club of overburdening their academy graduate with too much responsibility.

  • WHAT SAHA SAID

Speaking to , the 46-year-old said: "No, I think he's a top player. He has a bit of a similar trajectory to what’s going on with Alejandro Garnacho. He arrived early but he developed without the right kind of players and people around him, maybe his entourage was a bad influence. He played with Wayne Rooney, but soon he was the main man, who was given too much responsibility.

"Maybe he was burdened with too much by the club, and it’s hard to just blame the player when the club expected so much from him. Perhaps it is unfair to expect so much and he simply could not cope with those demands. But in terms of quality, Rashford is still one of the best in the world on his day. He’s unbelievable, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s interested in Barcelona and they’re interested in him. He could be a great player for a big club."

He added: "The question for Marcus is if he can ever do it again regularly, can he be untouchable like he once was? He used to excel, and he’d be joining a really confident Barcelona squad with teenagers who are already unplayable. Lamine Yamal could be a Ballon d’Or winner soon, it’s crazy. Then there’s Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, players like that who just don’t mess around. They know their job. Does Rashford?"

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

Ruben Amorim has already completed three signings, including the high-profile transfer of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. They are now inching closer to securing a move for Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and have also been linked to Valencia's Javi Guerra.

Everton ready to trigger £30m release clause for "exciting" DCL replacement

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin heading for the exit door, Everton have turned their attention towards a La Liga star and are now reportedly ready to match his release clause worth over £30m.

Everton set to lose Calvert-Lewin

Calvert-Lewin’s contract situation is one that has been rumbling on for some time. In truth, however, a new deal has never really seemed likely for the academy graduate, who now looks destined to depart as a free agent at the end of this month.

It puts the Toffees in an interesting position. Whilst they wouldn’t have been desperate to lose an academy graduate, Calvert-Lewin’s form and injury history across recent years have hardly made him the main man in Merseyside, especially with Beto finding his feet under David Moyes in the second half of last season.

Circumstances have been tough at times, but Calvert-Lewin’s drop-off is undeniable. From scoring 16 goals in one season to finally bursting into life and finding his best form, the forward has managed a combined total of 12 in the last three seasons. For all parties, an exit makes perfect sense.

That said, Everton must still replace the 28-year-old and they seem well aware of that. The Friedkin Group already attempted to make a statement by winning the race to sign Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, only for Chelsea to come calling with an offer that the forward could not and did not refuse.

Now, they’re back to the drawing board. Ahead of a new era, a marquee signing to lead the line certainly wouldn’t go amiss. After missing out on Delap, the big question is just who Everton will turn to in the coming months.

The rumours are coming thick and fast regarding a La Liga star, however, who has a similar release clause to the aforementioned Delap.

Everton ready to match Thierno Barry's release clause

According to TEAMtalk, Everton are now ready to meet Thierno Barry’s release clause this summer which is worth €40m (£34m) this summer. Having initially shown interest in the Villarreal forward, those in Merseyside are reportedly ready to step up their move to commence their transfer business with the La Liga star also keen on a move.

It’s clear to see why Everton are so eager to push on with their move for Barry too. The 22-year-old got off to a rapid start at Villarreal last season, earning the praise of scout Jacek Kulig who dubbed him an “exciting CF investment”, and has since stolen even more headlines.

Everton now gifted chance to sign "excellent" £300,000-p/w PL star on loan

The Toffees could sign a vastly experienced star…

BySean Markus Clifford Jun 8, 2025

By the time that last season reached a conclusion, Barry had found the back of the net 19 times in all competitions. If Everton are to welcome a marquee signing to commence their summer business, he should be at the top of their wishlist.

The irony of Shadman's rise to the top

Always under the radar in Bangladesh because his style of play isn’t as flashy as some of the others’, the opener has arrived in international cricket with the potential to go big

Mohammad Isam in Dhaka30-Nov-2018It had only been a few hours since Shadman Islam had made 73 against the West Indians in the practice game. But the news was already out. He had made the Bangladesh Test side. It was the final confirmation that the coach Steve Rhodes and selectors Minhajul Abedin and Habibul Bashar believed in his ability. He would be the back-up opener.Soumya Sarkar failed in the first Test in Chattogram. So did Imrul Kayes, who then picked up shoulder and toe injuries as well. Bangladesh needed a new opener and Shadman was there. The eighth debutant in a year when they have played only eight Tests. The onus was on the 23-year-old to make the most of his chance. Although he was the top-scorer of the Under-19 World Cup in 2014, some of his peers from that tournament – Imam-ul-Haq, Aiden Markram, Kusal Mendis, Liton Das – had overtaken him onto the international stage. He needed to catch up.Shadman certainly looked the part on his first day as a Test cricketer, going to lunch on 36 not out, with three sweetly-timed fours. More than that, he had batted without being overwhelmed by the fact that he was facing an attack that had caused several Bangladesh batting collapses in the recent past.Shadman struck three more fours in the post-lunch session, one of which brought up his half-century, and by the time he was finally dismissed, he had played 199 deliveries, the most for any Bangladesh debutant in the last 15 years.”It felt good,” Shadman said. “Everyone has a dream to play for their country. I tried to give my best for the team, and although I couldn’t fulfill expectations, I will try to do it in the future.”There’s no real regret [of not reaching a century]. I think everyone wants a century on debut. I tried to bat the way it was best for the team. I couldn’t finish the day properly. I felt I should have been around for longer.”Shadman is an old-fashioned opener. He has made most of his 3023 first-class runs by concentrating on his defence. And that is what he did against West Indies as well.”I didn’t think much more than trying to play to the merit of the ball, like the way I have played in domestic cricket,” he said. “I think the practice match helped me. I got an idea about their bowlers. My plan for the practice match also worked here. [My senior team-mates] are more experienced than me, so they kept telling me that I should do only what I do best, like I bat in domestic cricket. They told me to not try anything extra. You have trusted your natural game, so stay that way.”Shadman became a contender for higher honours in 2014-15, when he accumulated 1,323 runs at 55.12 in both four-day and one-day cricket. He’s had a good time in recent Dhaka Premier League seasons as well, averaging 47.00 in 2017 and 46.20 in 2018, and his chart-topping numbers – 680 runs at 64.80 – in the ongoing National Cricket League made sure he couldn’t be ignored by the national selectors anymore.Ironically enough, the reason behind his success is also the reason behind his taking so long to come to prominence. His steady approach to run-making goes under the radar when compared to some of the other, flashier talents in Bangladesh. But now that he has made good of his first opportunity at the highest level, Shadman certainly has the potential to catch up with the Under-19 class of 2014. His father – Shahidul, who has been a longtime talent scout for the BCB – made sure of that.”My father definitely has an influence in my life. When I was a kid, used to take me to all the U-15 and U-17 camps. I tried to prepare myself in academy and school cricket like my father guided me.”He supported my cricket a lot. He still tells me how to play, how to set my life as a cricketer. I try to keep myself that way.”Shadman could have easily sulked over his lack of opportunities. He could have been lost in Bangladesh’s rapidly shifting domestic cricket system. But he seems to possess patience, a very important characteristic for a cricketer, especially for one in this part of the world.

Everton and Moyes hold face-to-face meeting with £30m "monster" over move

Everton and David Moyes have had a meeting with a Premier League attacker over a summer move to the club, according to an update from renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Everton plotting summer signings

A new era is dawning for the Toffees, with life at Goodison Park now over for the men’s team and a move to Bramley-Moore Dock taking place this summer.

The hope is that Everton will be able to make the jump from being a relegation-threatened outfit to a team pushing for Europe, but plenty of new signings are required in the summer transfer window.

Everton manager David Moyes

Nantes centre-back Nathan Zeze has been linked with a move to Merseyside, and Everton may have to be eyeing defensive replacements for Jarrad Branthwaite should the highly rated Englishman decide to head off for a new challenge ahead of next season.

Meanwhile, Galatasaray right-back Elias Jelert has also been mentioned as a defensive addition. Further up the pitch, Jamie Carragher has urged them to sign Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, telling him to be a “main man” at the club.

Everton hold meeting with Premier League "monster"

Now, writing on X, Romano has claimed that Moyes has recently met with £30m-rated Delap, as they look to get a summer deal over the line for the England international:

Delap could be a great signing for the Toffees this summer, with Moyes badly in need of more firepower, especially if Dominic Calvert-Lewin moves on.

The Ipswich ace has impressed in a relegated team this season, scoring 12 goals in 32 Premier League starts, and teammate Alex Palmer has said of him:

“You look at him and he’s a monster. He’s a young lad that’s got the enthusiasm and energy – and also the talent. So for us to have him and him be playing as well as he is at the moment, he’s going to have a big part to play [in] the rest of the season.”

If Everton were able to beat the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United to the signing of Delap, it would feel like a major coup, potentially making other possible additions feel that Moyes is building something great at the club.

He's been better than Branthwaite: Moyes hit gold on Everton’s "revelation"

Moyes wants to make a wealth of summer signings at Everton, but he’s already found a gem or two.

ByAngus Sinclair May 24, 2025

Branded an “unselfish” player, the 22-year-old is still young and should only mature as a footballer for the foreseeable future, and he has the physicality and selflessness to thrive in a Moyes team, given the types of centre-forwards he prefers.
