Obstructing the field, unusual stoppages, and devastating Latham

All the major talking points from the week gone by in the Super Smash

Deivarayan Muthu23-Jan-2019Mitchell out obstructing the fieldIn the fifth over of Northern Knights’ innings against Canterbury Kings, Daryl Mitchell patted a ball from Kyle Jamieson back to him and took a couple of steps out of his crease. The bowler swooped down on the ball in his follow-through and aimed to throw the stumps down, but Mitchell stuck his right leg in the way. Though the ball wasn’t heading towards the stumps, Mitchell was guilty of deliberately coming in the way of the throw.Jamieson gestured that Mitchell knocked the ball away with his leg and launched an appeal for obstructing the field. The on-field umpires Wayne Knights and Ashley Mehrotra got together and referred it to TV umpire Tony Gillies, who ultimately gave Mitchell out.

Four days later, in the final over of Otago’s chase of 185, Auckland Aces’ Mitchell McClenaghan bowled an inch-perfect yorker from round the wicket and Leicestershire’s Ben Raine hastily jabbed his bat down and set off for a single. In the process, he collided with McClenaghan, who recovered and scooped the ball onto the stumps at the striker’s end, where Nathan Smith had reached his crease in time.McClenaghan, though, appealed for obstructing the field but replays indicated that Raine hadn’t changed his line while running. The soft signal was not out, and TV umpire Derek Walker sided with it.Sun stops play in NapierSun squinted into the eyes of the batsmen and forced a 25-minute interruption in the match between Central Districts and Canterbury at McLean Park in Napier. Moments before the players and the officials walked off the field, legspinner Todd Astle had drawn a thick outside edge from Dean Foxcroft, but Tom Latham, the keeper, had dropped it. The action resumed once the sun moved away. The setting sun was at an awkward angle again during the first ODI between India and New Zealand and interrupted the visitors’ chase on Wednesday.ALSO READ: Sun stops play in New Zealand v India ODI

Astle began promisingly and created the aforementioned chance, but lost his lines and lengths once Will Young and Tom Bruce began teeing off. Astle wound up leaking 44 runs in his four overs, including 14 in his last.Turning out for Wellington Firebirds against Auckland, Neesham was dismissed for 1 by Colin Munro. He then bowled only two overs, conceding 15 runs.Mitchell McClenaghan sends down a delivery•Getty ImagesMatch of the weekThe clash between Northern Knights and Canterbury Kings at Seddon Park. After being sent in, the Knights posted 154 for 5 in a rain-hit 16-overs-a-side game on the back of opener Nick Kelly’s maiden T20 half-century.Then the Kings lost Tom Latham to Mitchell Santner off the first ball of the chase. The returning Henry Nicholls flickered briefly for 40 off 25 balls before Ish Sodhi reeled him in with a wrong’un. Cam Fletcher and Leo Carter, however, put on a 56-run stand off 40 balls and took the game deep. When the Kings needed 19 off the last two overs it was anybody’s game. But Knights’ overseas recruit Kyle Abbott and Daryl Mitchell sewed up a six-run win (via DLS method) with a variety of cutters and yorkers. The result put the Kings out of contention for the knockouts.Batsman of the weekLatham exploited the short boundaries and the fast McLean Park outfield, cracking his maiden T20 century – and the first in this season’s Super Smash – off 57 balls against Central Districts. He was particularly severe on left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel, smashing him for 30 runs from nine balls before holing out off him. However, the rapidly rising asking rate was too much to overcome and Canterbury came up short in a chase of 226.Bowler of the weekMcClenaghan is an excellent bowler in the Powerplay, but he hasn’t been as effective in the end overs. Against Otago, he nailed one yorker after another and defended 16 in the final over against the well-set Raine and Smith. He is currently the second-highest wicket-taker in the competition with 11 scalps in five matches at an economy rate of 7.95. Jamieson, who has played two more games, leads the list with 14 wickets.

Paris takes 11 in the match as Western Australia surge to victory

Cameron Bancroft took a blinding catch at slip on the final day to cap a fine match

AAP29-Oct-2023Joel Paris ripped through South Australia’s batting to take a career-best 11 wickets for the match, bowling Western Australia to a 200-run Sheffield Shield win in Adelaide. After WA declared overnight and set South Australia 355 on the final day to win, Paris claimed figures of 5 for 39 to have the Redbacks all out for 154.Paris took the first two wickets, before coming back to finish the job early in the final session. New South Wales' Sheffield Shield misery continues with MCG thrashing

After taking 6 for 74 in the first innings to have the Redbacks all out for 264, Paris was a handful on Sunday in his first Shield match of the summer due to a hamstring injury. While his career has been stalled by injury in recent years, Paris has never been far from selectors’ thoughts after playing two ODIs for Australia in 2016.So highly is he regarded, he was told during this year’s Ashes to be ready to join the squad as cover for Mitchell Starc if the left-armer went down with injury. The 30-year-old set the tone early when he drew South Australian opener Kelvin Smith’s edge, discarding him for a duck. He is the premier, form batsman of the competition.”After Bancroft’s neat work in the field, Paris then returned to finish the match after tea when he took the edges of both Harry Conway and Wes Agar.WA’s other left-armer Liam Haskett took 3 for 31, while spinner Corey Rocchiccioli claimed 2 for 59 in the side’s second Shield win of the summer. The loss marked South Australia’s second defeat in three games to start the season, leaving them in fourth spot on the ladder.”It’s pretty disappointing,” coach Jason Gillespie said. “In three Shield games, we’ve had seven individual scores above 40. We just can’t keep having these performances. We need to be better.”

"World-class" £59m striker who's outscoring Haaland wants to join Man City

A “world-class” striker has identified Manchester City as a destination in the summer transfer window, having made it clear he wants to move to the Premier League, according to a report.

Man City planning major rebuild

After winning an unprecedented four titles on the spin, Man City have finally dropped off this season, having lost nine of their 28 Premier League games up to this point, and manager Pep Guardiola is now planning a major summer rebuild.

The overhaul got underway back in January, with the likes of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez and Abdukodir Khusanov moving to the Etihad Stadium, but Guardiola has his eye on several other targets.

A report has suggested City may have closed a deal for Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, with Rodri’s absence exposing the need to bring in additional options in midfield, while they are also weighing up a move for Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga.

Guardiola is also keen on bolstering his wide options, with SC Braga winger Roger Fernandes recently emerging as a target, amid the uncertainty surrounding Jack Grealish’s future.

One position in which there is seemingly little need to strengthen is striker, given that Guardiola has Erling Haaland at his disposal, however a new report has suggested there could be an opportunity to bring in a new option in the summer.

According to A Bola (via Sport Witness), Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres wants to move to the Premier League, and he has made it clear he wants to join either Man City, Arsenal or Liverpool.

Gyokeres’ summer exit is described as ‘inevitable’, and a move to the Etihad Stadium could be on the cards, should the Sky Blues be willing to stump up the €70m (£59m) asking price, which could rise even higher if a bidding war breaks out.

"World-class" Gyokeres in red-hot form

The Swedish striker has been extremely impressive this season, scoring 39 goals in 40 games in all competitions, 11 more than Haaland, albeit in a much weaker league.

The 26-year-old has had a steady rise to the top since emerging as a consistent goalscorer for Coventry City in the 2021-22 Championship campaign, and he is on course to record his best-ever goal return this term.

Having been lauded as “world-class” by members of the media, there is every indication the former Coventry man could make a real impact at one of Europe’s top clubs, but there are major doubts over whether he would be a necessary addition to Guardiola’s side.

It is unlikely any player in the world would be able to dislodge Haaland in the City starting XI, and Guardiola would risk both strikers becoming unsettled if he decided to bring in Gyokeres this summer, so it is probably wise to focus on strengthening other areas of the squad.

Lamine Yamal, Ousmane Dembele and GOAL's top 50 players of the 2024-25 European season – ranked

The curtain is about to come down on another European football season, with just Saturday's Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter in Munich left to go. It's been a campaign full of twists and turns, shocks and surprises, with a number of clubs ending long waits for silverware while others have regained titles after missing out last season.

From the perspective of the players, the race for Ballon d'Or has been wide open, with a number of superstars showing exactly why are considered among the best to every play the game. But who were the absolute best, and who were some of the unsung heroes who deserve greater recognition?

To mark the end of the campaign, nine GOAL writers and editors (Stephen Darwin, Krishan Davis, Mark Doyle, Thomas Hindle, Richard Martin, Tom Maston, Joe Strange, Sean Walsh and James Westwood) have each ranked their best players from the European season to produce this Top 50 list – let us know who is too high, too low or who we missed in the comments:

    50David de Gea (Fiorentina)

David de Gea has had a pretty unique couple of years. Released by Manchester United at the end of the 2022-23 season after the Red Devils performed a U-turn in offering him a new contract, De Gea then spent a year out of the game as it looked increasingly likely that he would be forced into retirement before reaching his mid-30s.

That was until Fiorentina offered the Spain international the chance to resume his career in Florence last summer, and De Gea has grasped the opportunity with both hands. The 34-year-old kept 11 clean sheets in Serie A and conceded just 38 goals in 35 league games as he routinely pulled off magnificent saves for Raffaele Palladino's side. Perhaps United are regretting letting him leave after all…

    49Pau Cubarsi (Barcelona)

Pau Cubarsi won't turn 19 until January, and yet he is already a veteran of 80 appearances for the Barcelona first team after a season in which he locked down a place at the heart of the Blaugrana's backline following his emergence from La Masia midway through the previous campaign.

One of Europe's best ball-playing centre-backs, Cubarsi has had to get to grips with Hansi Flick's high line in Catalunya, but has showed few signs of being uncomfortable during a series of displays that bely is relative lack of experience. Surely a cornerstone for both Barca and Spain over the next decade or so, the winners' medals he picked up in La Liga and the Copa del Rey will be the first of many.

    48Moises Caicedo (Chelsea)

Moises Caicedo may have struggled to live up to his £115 million ($147m) price tag during his first year at Chelsea, but the Ecuadorian has shown exactly why the Blues were willing pay Brighton such a fee during his sophomore season in west London.

No player won possession back more times over the course of the Premier League season than Caicedo, while he also provided some key goals and assists along the way as Enzo Maresca's side secured a return to the Champions League after two seasons away. Him being voted Chelsea's Player and Player's Player of the Season was a perfect illustration of Caicedo's impact in 2024-25.

  • Getty Images Sport

    47Yann Sommer (Inter)

One of the most underrated signings of the past two seasons, Yann Sommer has again shown himself to be one of the world's best goalkeepers over the course of his second season at Inter. The former Switzerland shot-stopper has kept 21 clean sheets in 48 games across all competitions, leading to him conceding less than a goal each game, on average.

Sommer saved his best performance of the season for the second leg of Inter's Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, when despite conceding three goals, he was arguably the difference between the two teams as he produced a series of fine saves at San Siro, including a remarkable stop to deny Lamine Yamal an almost-certain goal in extra-time.

100% duels lost: Pep must drop Man City flop who was shown up by Khusanov

A frustrating week for Manchester City came to an end on Sunday as they were beaten 2-0 by Premier League leaders Liverpool at The Etihad.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai secured all three points for Arne Slot’s men, who are now 11 points clear at the top of the division.

This came off the back of a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League, resulting in their exit from the competition, on Wednesday night, thanks to a stunning hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe.

There were some positives for Pep Guardiola and his team to take from the defeat to the Reds, though, and one was the performance of Abdukodir Khusanov at the heart of the defence.

Abdukodir Khusanov's performance against Liverpool

The January signing from Ligue 1 side Rennes was selected alongside Nathan Ake at centre-back, with Ruben Dias left on the bench, and stepped up with an excellent showing for the Cityzens.

Abdukodir Khusanov in action for Man City

Khusanov had a nightmare debut against Chelsea, making an error for Noni Madueke’s goal after just three minutes, but the 20-year-old titan appears to have settled into Premier League life now.

The talented youngster made a terrific last-man challenge on Szoboszlai towards the end of the game and halted Salah, when the score was 0-0, in the first half when the forward appeared set to test Ederson unchallenged.

Chalkboard

In total, he made six clearances, one block, one tackle, and one interception, whilst the centre-back also won two of his three duels and completed 99% (87/88) of his attempted passes.

Khusanov made some vital defensive interventions and produced some excellent moments to keep Liverpool at bay, whilst Ake struggled in the left-sided centre-back role.

Why Nathan Ake should be dropped

Guardiola must instantly drop the Netherlands international from the starting line-up for the next game against Tottenham Hotspur after he put in a dismal display against Liverpool.

As you can see in the clip above, Salah’s goal to open the scoring at The Etihad came via a deflection off Ake, as the left-footed flop dangled a leg out and deflected the effort past Ederson.

The former Chelsea and Bournemouth star offered very little from a defensive perspective, as Salah also burst past him with ease in the left channel and Khusanov had to sweep up and win possession back before the forward could get a shot away in the first half.

As you can see in the table above, Ake lost 100% of his duels in the match and did not make a single tackle, interception, or block to help his side out.

Whereas, Khusanov, as aforementioned won two of his three ground duels and made six clearances, tackles, blocks, and interceptions combined, which means that he showed up the Dutch dud – who is ten years his senior – on Sunday.

Guardiola must, now, instantly drop Ake from the XI and bring Dias, who has won 54% of his duels in the Premier League this season, back into the side to provide a dominant presence alongside Khusanov against Spurs.

It will then be down to the Dutchman to show, in training or off the bench, that he can bounce back with an improved display when he next gets an opportunity to start.

Ange has found a "generational" talent at Spurs who's the new Mousa Dembele

They might not have won anything, but Mauricio Pochettino’s peak Tottenham Hotspur team was packed with talent.

The North Londoners were blessed with some truly sensational players from front to back during that period.

Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dele Alli were scoring for fun, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld created one of the best defensive pairings in Europe, and Hugo Lloris was, more often than not, a rock at the back.

conor-gallagher-mousa-dembele-tottenham-opinion

However, perhaps the most underrated player – among non-Spurs fans – of them all from that period was the incredible Mousa Dembélé, and it looks as if Ange Postecoglou may have just uncovered his own version of the Belgian.

Mousa Dembélé's Spurs career

In the summer of 2012, after spending just over two seasons with West London side Fulham, Dembélé completed a £15m move to Spurs.

The former AZ Alkmaar star made an instant impact in North London, scoring on his debut – against Norwich City – and ending his first campaign at the club with 42 appearances across all competitions.

Already an established part of the first team, the Belgian “monster,” as dubbed by Eric Dier, took yet another step forward when Pochettino joined the club in May 2014.

adam-wharton-mousa-dembele-tottenham-opinion

Under the Argentine’s leadership, the Antwerp-born dynamo turned into one of the very best central midfielders in the Premier League, someone capable of winning the ball in his own half and carrying it all the way up the pitch for someone else to finish.

His immense abilities weren’t lost on his teammates or manager either, with Kyle Walker describing him as “the best player I’ve ever seen play football” and Pochettino claiming that he was a footballing “genius.”

In all, the 37-year-old made 249 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring ten goals and providing ten assists, before moving to the Chinese Super League in January 2019 and retiring four years later.

Dembélé was an utterly sublime footballer, and while the club haven’t been able to replace him, Postecoglou may have just stumbled upon the club’s next version of the Belgian.

Spurs' next Dembélé

Now, we are aware that such a label can be both a blessing and a curse for players, but we reckon Lucas Bergvall has more than enough talent to make good on it.

The young midfielder was signed from Swedish outfit Djurgårdens for around £8.5m last winter but didn’t officially join the squad until last summer, and while it took him some time to get up to speed in the first team, he has recently been one of the club’s most impressive players.

Like Dembélé, the young Swede is seemingly a natural in a few positions in midfield, making 34 appearances in central midfield, 16 in attacking midfield and 13 in defensive midfield.

Tottenham Hotspur's Lucas Bergvall in action with Vissel Kobe'sRyoHatsuse

Moreover, while each role requires something a little different from the 19-year-old, be that a dangerous final ball from the ten position or a brilliant interception at the base of midfield, he’s shown one quality that the Belgian star was known for: ball-carrying.

According to FBref, the “generational” talent, as dubbed by journalist Mitch Fretton, sits in the top 3% of midfielders in the Premier League this season for total carrying distance, the top 5% for successful take-ons, the top 7% for progressive carrying distance, the top 10% for carries and more, all per 90.

Finally, while the “uber-complete” teenage phenom, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, certainly has what it takes to play in the number ten position in the future, it does seem like Postecoglu and Co will be able to get more out of his incredible skillset by playing him in the middle of the park, where Dembélé used to boss games.

Ultimately, while he’s still incredibly young, and a lot could happen over the coming years, it looks like Spurs might just have their next genuinely great central midfielder in Bergvall.

Finch puts spotlight on Australia middle order: 'They're not great numbers'

Michael Clarke backs Marnus Labuschagne to come good but has spotted a technical issue

Andrew McGlashan31-Jan-20242:35

Should we be worried about Marnus’ form?

Aaron Finch believes that Australia’s bowling attack has helped paper over some cracks in the batting line-up this season after five Tests that brought just two individual centuries.Australia fell to an eight-run loss against West Indies at the Gabba on Sunday, one of the biggest upsets in Test history, after a collapse of 8 for 94 in a chase of 216. In the first innings they had also been 54 for 5 before Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey and Pat Cummins led a recovery.Related

No runs for fun: how bowlers are now holding sway in Australia

Ball-by-ball: Shamar Joseph rips through Australia at the Gabba

Takeaways: Batting under scrutiny, Green's evolution and masterful bowling quartet

While the home side had won the previous four Tests of the season, their batting had been under significant pressure since the opening game against Pakistan in Perth where they made 487. Only two individual centuries were scored – by David Warner and Travis Head – although Mitchell Marsh twice fell in the 90s and Steven Smith carried his bat for 91 in Brisbane.Marnus Labuschagne made 18 runs in three completed innings against West Indies, and has averaged 28.25 for the season, while Head made a king pair at the Gabba. Aside from his matchwinning 119 in Adelaide, Head’s next-highest score for the five Tests was 40.”Think the bowlers have been the ones who have got them out of jail a few times, but also Usman Khawaja…and Mitch Marsh is also pulling his weight in that regard. They’re not great numbers for a middle order that I think have got some much talent.” Finch told ESPN’s show “The hundreds column is a concern for me. Guys are getting starts, and that’s reflected in the numbers, it’s not like they’re averaging six.”If you have a bad series in two Tests like Marnus [Labuschagne] that’s okay, everyone will have that at some point, but there’s not enough hundreds. There’s a few cracks that have been papered over from Usman Khawaja and the bowlers who have done a brilliant job for a long time.”On Labuschagne, specifically, there remains confidence that he will work through his slump ahead of the New Zealand Test series which starts in late February. Michael Clarke said that it was a phase almost every player will endure at some point, but had spotted a small technical challenge Labuschagne was going through.”The only thing I can see technically is that he just looks to be squaring up a little bit with his right shoulder,” Clarke said. “So mainly the balls that are that back-of-a-length, instead of staying really side on like he does and back-foot defends the ball to cover or to point, or even drops it to his feet, he’s just squaring up a little bit. And that’s why he’s playing a little in front of himself, edging it to a second, third [slip], gully area.”Again, he’s such a good player, he’ll go away now, he’ll work on that before New Zealand. You can’t write Marnus off. He’s batting at No. 3 which is one of the toughest positions in Test cricket. Don’t be surprised if he comes out against New Zealand and he’s the leading run-scorer. About every top-class batsman goes through a stage like this.”1:34

Finch: They’re not great numbers for a middle order

Finch added: “Think that’s been highlighted in his strike-rate as well,” he said. “You get into a defensive frame of mind where you think about survival first and I’ll cash in later on. But the wicket’s they’ve been playing on, you don’t get that opportunity to cash in – it’ not like they flatten out and become absolute roads and you can bat for two days, we just don’t see that anymore.”Meanwhile, Callum Ferguson warned that the task for the top order is unlikely to get any easier when they head to New Zealand for two matches which shape as key in the current World Test Championship cycle.”Don’t think Marnus is the only one getting caught out squaring up and that can be a bit of a result of batting on some wickets that are bowler-friendly,” Ferguson said. “You just get a little bit out of shape, so they’re going to have to do some hard work before they get over to New Zealand to just get a bit more side on, a few of them, and start playing a touch later. Because over in New Zealand they’ll be seaming, swinging conditions and New Zealand are very good at extracting the most out of those pitches.”

Gavi was sidelined with a serious knee injury in the 2023-24 campaign, which saw him miss the three months of the latest campaign. Despite regaining full fitness, the midfielder failed to regain a regular place in the starting XI in Flick's debut season. Since his return from injury, he has played in 42 matches but started just 14 in La Liga and three in the Champions League. It had been reported that PSG manager Luis Enrique is keen on bringing Gavi to the French capital. However, he says there is no chance of that happening.

Gavi told : "People believe what they read in any media. I understand people who might believe it. But it's not going to happen. I'm very calm. My dream and my mentality is to spend my entire career at Barca. It's the club of my life and where I want to succeed. I don't want any other, and I'll give everything I have to make it happen."

When asked about his relationship with Flick, Gavid said: "Very close, I think you can see it. But not just with me, but with the whole team as well. He's a man who's always there for you when you need him, and that's very important. I think it's part of what we've won this season."
