He could be Raphinha 2.0: Leeds eyeing "one of the best CMs in the world"

Leeds United are ramping up their transfer activity as the new Premier League season edges ever closer.

Former Manchester City youth starlet Lucas Nmecha has now joined the ranks from Wolfsburg to enhance the Whites’ attacking options. It’s surely only a matter of time before Jaka Bijol is announced too, after he has allegedly undergone a medical at Elland Road.

Jaka Bijol in action for Udinese.

The next logical step would be to add some reinforcements in the middle of the park, therefore, and Leeds’ wish could be granted if they were to land a former Premier League ace.

Leeds interested in deal for £25m star

Strengthening the midfield ranks is evidently a key priority for Leeds this summer with moves for the likes of Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki reportedly lined up.

Diarra seems to be a more concrete target at the moment with fresh claims suggesting that they made a bid worth £21m.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Slow progress is being made on that deal, so the Whites are seeking alternatives. Well, according to a new report from Italian outlet Tuttosport, via Sport Witness, Leeds are in the picture to land former Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz this summer.

The report states that Luiz will be allowed to leave Juventus this off-season after a mediocre stint in Turin, but Leeds could well be put off by the Serie A giants and their asking price, with Igor Tudor’s men having purchased the Brazilian for a bumper £42m fee.

The move could still have legs on a loan-to-buy basis, however, with the report clarifying that such a deal would only cost Daniel Farke’s men £25m down the line. That marks a sharp decrease from Luiz’s staggering £100m valuation back in 2023.

Thus, that £25m fee feels like a reasonable fee to pay for the South American, with his reputation needing to be repaired, and that could occur back in England, where he once starred for Unai Emery’s men regularly.

Why Luiz could become Leeds' new Raphinha-like star

Luiz could come in and seriously improve Farke’s midfield options, with this deal having a similar feel to when Leeds purchased another Brazilian from Europe in the form of Raphinha for a bargain £16m, with the rest now history on the end of the Barcelona superstar.

Obviously, Raphinha didn’t have the backdrop of flopping at Rennes before he relocated to West Yorkshire, but it would have been seen as a savvy deal at the time, with Leeds only having to fork out a modest fee to win the slick winger.

The 34-time Brazil international would go on to cement himself in Leeds hearts everywhere with his skilful performances throughout his short stay, leading to the now Barca number 11 collecting 17 goals and 12 assists from 67 appearances, with his efforts as the Whites’ top goalscorer during his swansong season at Elland Road helping Leeds to just about beat the drop.

Luiz might well follow in Raphinha’s footsteps and be the energetic presence Leeds need to secure their Premier League status this coming season, with the Rio De Janeiro-born midfielder a proven top-flight performer.

Farke would love to call upon Luiz as an additional central body, therefore, with the vibrant Brazilian capable of getting stuck in when needed. Like Raphinha, who’s now a firm Ballon d’Or contender, he’s got fine pedigree, notably hailed as “one of the best 6s in the Premier League” and “one of the best [midfielders] in the world” by Sky Italia.

That’s showcased perfectly by his numbers for the Villans, where he ranked within the top 7% of midfielders in the Premier League in 2023/24 for goals, demonstrating his attacking flair to go alongside his defensive qualities.

Luiz only got better and better the more his Premier League journey at Villa Park went on, culminating in him firing home a ridiculous nine Premier League strikes during his final season in the West Midlands.

He would even be labelled as “world-class” during his celebrated stay with the Villans by teammate John McGinn, with Raphinha once also talked about in the same glowing manner in West Yorkshire when heralded as “special” by Marcelo Bielsa.

Everything is pointing in the direction of this being a superb deal, with Luiz potentially going on to be their new Premier League saviour, just as Raphinha was once upon a time.

Since 2023, Adidas has been the brand behind the black-and-white stripes of the Toon Army, taking the baton from Castore after striking a lucrative deal.

It wasn't too long ago that Puma had their name stitched into the North East side's kits either. Now back in partnership with Newcastle, Adidas will be banking on fresh designs flying off the shelves—something that would not only excite fans but also fatten Newcastle's coffers and give their transfer kitty a nice little bump, after a £40 million ($50 million) per year deal for five years was announced in September 2023.

Adidas have given Newcastle United’s iconic black and white stripes a fresh twist for the 2025-26 home kit, adding a serrated edge that forms a distinctive Shepherd's Check pattern. It’s a bold move that injects energy into the shirt without losing sight of the club’s rich identity.

A subtle splash of light blue trims the collar and runs down the side seams, a classy nod to vintage Newcastle kits from both the Adidas and Puma days.

The look is tied together with classic black shorts and socks, both featuring Adidas' trademark three-stripes, along with a clean white "NUFC" sign-off. There’s also a full-colour club crest and a "Howay the Lads" tag inside the collar, giving the kit a proper Geordie stamp.

Fans can grab the new home strip in authentic short-sleeve, replica short-sleeve, or long-sleeve versions — officially launched on Thursday, 29 May 2025. Prices start at £85 ($115). Clean, modern, and unmistakably Newcastle.

According to Newcastle World, it looks like the Magpies are once again going green for their change strip—something fans have come to expect, even if it strays from the club's traditional colour identity. Since the PIF takeover, Newcastle have switched between green and white for their alternate kits, and after last season's retro white throwback, it’s green’s time to shine again.

This year's away shirt is a full-on Saudi green design, decked out with crisp white club crests and sponsor logos. Subtle, darker green horizontal stripes stretch across the shirt, adding a bit of depth, while clean white detailing on the collar and flanks rounds off the look. Think of it as a colour-flipped version of last year's kit—same spirit, new twist.

Newcastle 2025-26 third kit, release date & price

The 2025-26 Newcastle United third kit is out — and it's got instant classic written all over it.

Adidas have once again dipped into the archives for inspiration, reimagining the beloved 1997-98 design for a fresh era. And somehow, against all fashion odds, they've made navy, green, and orange work in glorious harmony. It nods to nostalgia, but steers clear of feeling outdated.

Remember that off-centre stripe from the '98 edition that looked like it was knocked together in Microsoft Paint? That's gone. In its place is a sleeker, more balanced design that still pays tribute to the original’s soul without clinging to its quirks.

The shielded crest returns, sitting neatly where it should, while the detailing on the cuffs and collar bring a tasteful pop of green, subtle but effective. Add in the faint pinstripes and that unapologetically bold orange Trefoil logo with the iconic Adidas three stripes, and you’ve got a shirt that oozes modern retro.

Retailing at £120 ($165), the kit officially drops on 1st July and will be available at Newcastle United stores, select adidas outlets, and online via both club and adidas websites. Expect its first on-pitch outing against Celtic on 19th July in what will be the inaugural adidas Trophy — a fitting debut for a jersey that already feels like a collector’s item.

Newcastle United's 2025-26 goalkeeper lineup gets a vibrant makeover, as Adidas rolls out a bold new look tailored for the modern-day shot-stopper. The Men's Blue Goalkeeper Shirt is crafted for flexibility and command, featuring a short-sleeve cut and a stretch-fit design that allows total freedom between the posts.

The ribbed collar and fluid pattern pay tribute to the booming presence of keepers directing their backline.

Meanwhile, the third goalkeeper shirt is sure to turn heads with its striking pink base, accented by black logos, stripes, and collar. Subtle tonal vertical lines run down the front for a stylish touch that doesn’t scream, but certainly speaks.

What truly sets it apart is the inclusion of the iconic Adidas Trefoil logo, a vintage flourish that also appears on the Magpies’ third outfield kit, blending tradition with trend in perfect harmony.

Saudi Pro League prepared to pay record-smashing €350m for Kylian Mbappe & hand him Cristiano Ronaldo-esque contract but Real Madrid transfer exit will not happen

The Saudi Pro League is reportedly prepared to pay a record-smashing €350 million for Kylian Mbappe and hand him a Cristiano Ronaldo-esque contract.

World Cup winner Mbappe has emerged as a top target for teams in the Middle East after they failed to lure club colleague Vinicius Junior away from Santiago Bernabeu. It was claimed that a €300m (£259m/$348m) fee could change hands there, with a €1 billion (£863m/$1.2bn) contract being lined up.

No deal was done for the Brazil international, but the Saudi Pro League remains in the market for “high-profile players that can elevate the league’s global image”. According to , a €350m (£302m/$406m) offer has been readied for Mbappe.

The France international would be handed terms that “match or come very close to Ronaldo”, with the five-time Ballon d’Or-winning Portuguese superstar working on a record-breaking deal at Al-Nassr.

Mbappe has also “shown no inclination” that he wants to leave the Bernabeu. He is focused on “establishing his legacy among Europe’s elite” and believes his efforts to be in peak condition for the 2026 World Cup “would be compromised by a move to the Saudi league”.

Arsenal set to make "official announcement" that's as exciting as Gyokeres

A big week is on the cards for Arsenal. Andrea Berta has attacked the transfer market with intent and supporters are feeling positive energy heading into the new campaign.

The Gunners have already announced three new signings. Kepa Arrizabalaga has arrived to provide competition for David Raya, joining from Chelsea, while another Premier League talent in the shape of Christian Norgaard has arrived as Jorginho’s replacement.

The headline addition so far has been Martin Zubimendi. The Gunners have been courting the Spaniard for a while and have finally got their man, bringing him in for a £60m fee, officially confirming his signature last week.

But, there’s still much to do for Arsenal. Noni Madueke looks set to arrive after undergoing the final part of his medical on Monday.

It’s also expected Cristhian Mosquera will join from Valencia and Eberechi Eze is reportedly still on the club’s radar.

Still, the biggest deal of all will see a certain Viktor Gyokeres arrive in north London. It’s a move that’s set to make those in the Premier League envious.

Why Arsenal are signing Viktor Gyokeres

Goals, goals and more goals. We can wrap this segment up now, right?

For a long time now the missing piece of the puzzle at Arsenal has felt like a centre-forward. In 2024/25, no player reached double figures for goals in the Premier League. That was the first time that’s happened for the Gunners in over 100 years, dating back to the 1923/24 campaign.

Of course, Arsenal had to deal with injuries to the likes of Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka but their absence only illuminated the problems in Mikel Arteta’s frontline further.

As a result, the club seemingly had two options this summer. To sign RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko or Sporting’s Gyokeres.

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokerescelebrates scoring their third goal to complete his hat-trick

Well, after a deal for Sesko looked as though it was going to be too expensive, Berta and Co decided to push harder for Gyokeres’ signature, pulling the trigger on a move over the weekend.

According to David Ornstein, the Reds are set to sign the Swede having finally agreed a fee with the Portuguese club that will see him move for a guaranteed price of £55m plus an extra £8.6m in add-ons.

That looks could represent a bargain considering the numbers he’s been registering in recent years.

While 2024/25 was a colossal campaign for the 27-year-old, scoring 54 goals in 52 games, he’s not just a one-season wonder.

Gyokeres also scored 43 goals for Sporting in his debut campaign and thrived at Coventry City, bagging 22 in his final year with the Sky Blues.

Arsenal need goals and Gyokeres certainly does them. Still, there’s an announcement reportedly incoming that may generate just as much fanfare.

Arsenal's exciting announcement after Gyokeres

While very few things will top the arrival of a new centre-forward, the renewal of Ethan Nwaneri’s contract would certainly provide just as much excitement.

Indeed, the youngster’s future at the Emirates Stadium has been up in the air in recent weeks, with reports emerging last week that Chelsea were ready to pounce with a new deal for the teenager stalling.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Well, reports in recent days have suggested that Arsenal have overcome any impasse and Nwaneri is now set to put pen to paper on a new deal.

The BBC’s Sami Mokbel revealed on Sunday that Arsenal are ‘set to make’ Nwaneri a formal offer of a new contract, suggesting there is now a ‘will from all parties to reach an agreement’.

Football Transfers further reported that ‘an official announcement confirming his commitment to Arsenal is expected very soon.’

Why Arsenal needed to tie down Ethan Nwaneri

It’s safe to say that Nwaneri is a generational talent. Yes, we know that term gets thrown out more regularly than it should, but it’s the correct phrase to attribute to this young Arsenal star.

Officially the youngest player to ever feature in a Premier League game when handed his debut at the age of just 15, it’s been a slow road to regular action since then.

#1 Ethan Nwaneri

15 years, 5 months, 28 days

#2 Jack Porter

16 years, 2 months, 10 days

#3 Cesc Fabregas

16 years, 5 months, 24 days

#4 Jack Wilshere

16 years, 8 months, 12 days

#5 Jermaine Pennant

16 years, 10 months, 15 days

#6 Paul Vaessen

16 years, 11 months, 11 days

#7 Ryan Smith

16 years, 11 months, 18 days

#8 Gedion Zelalem

16 years, 11 months, 29 days

#9 Armand Traore

17 years, 16 days

That’s understandable given his age, but in 2024/25, he became a key part of this Arsenal team, scoring nine goals in all competitions across 37 outings and being rightfully nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award alongside teammate Myles Lewis-Skelly.

He’s one of the best young talents in European football. Only two players 18 or younger, Assane Diao and Lamine Yamal (both 9), scored more than Nwaneri’s four in Europe’s top five leagues last term, rubberstamping his early credentials.

His record so far and indeed his performances, have attracted widespread acclaim.

Former Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue reckons the teen “can be better than Yamal” in the future, while Joe Cole has suggested that the way he dribbles in and around the penalty area is “like Messi”.

Further celebrated by scout Jacek Kulig as “one of Hale End & England’s biggest jewels”, there are very few young players in the country bursting with as much potential as this kid.

Gyokeres will no doubt attract most of the hype this week but if a deal for Nwaneri also gets announced, don’t underestimate the importance.

With Chelsea circling for Arsenal’s best young talent, getting him tied down as soon as possible will be one of the best bits of business the club secures all summer. It won’t be long before the 18-year-old is starting week in, week out. Arsenal fans be excited.

Patterson suffers nasty injury; Strikers hold on as Sixers collapse

Bridget Patterson was involved in a nasty incident while wicketkeeping during Adelaide Strikers’ victory over Sydney Sixers at North Sydney Oval where Amanda-Jade Wellington produced a key all-round display. In the fourth over of Sixers’ chase Patterson took a ball in the face from a 119kph delivery by Darcie Brown which pitched in front of her and kicked up, striking near the right eye. Patterson stayed on the ground with a physio and doctor quickly onto the field and after a few minutes was able to walk off. She remained at the venue for remainder of the game and will be further assessed in the coming days.”It was a nasty injury,” Strikers coach Luke Williams said after the match. “Obviously we were all worried about her, but it looks like she’s escaped major injury. It certainly was nasty at the time with the cut.”Patterson had earlier played a key role with the bat as Strikers’ middle-order produced a powerful counterattack to enable the visitors to claim the first win of their title defence. In reply, Ellyse Perry dominated the early stages of the chase with a 26-ball fifty then Sarah Bryce impressed again with 62 off 44 balls but when she fell to Megan Schutt the innings faded swiftly in a collapse of 6 for 18. Legspinners Wellington and Anesu Mushangwe were superb in the closing overs with the former comfortably defending 14 off the last.Patterson, Wellington and Orla Prendergast combined to make 123 between them off 92 balls with 32 runs coming off the two power surge overs. Wellington, inparticular, cut loose inside the restrictions with two sixes and three fours off Ash Gardner and Lauren Cheatle to finish with 40 off 16.Those contributions enabled Strikers to recover from 51 for 4 in the seventh over after Cheatle had made early inroads before Perry held onto a stinging return catch – with a juggle – to claim Laura Wolvaardt.Perry and Bryce added 80 in 50 balls for the second wicket with Perry lacing 11 boundaries although she was dropped at long-on on 17. The impressive, and quick, Brown removed Perry when she top-edged a short ball to fine leg and Sixers suffered another huge blow when Gardner fell for a five-ball duck. But Bryce and 19-year-old Elsa Hunter, on her WBBL debut, put on 53 off 35 balls to bring the target in sight aided by some poor catching from Strikers but they couldn’t finish the job for a Sixers side stretched to the limits by injury.

Henriques' all-round heroics help NSW crush Tasmania

Henriques takes 2 for 31 and makes 71 not out while Dwarshuis bags 4 for 39 as NSW move to the top of the One-Day Cup table after a seven-wicket bonus point win over Tasmania

AAP and ESPNCricinfo staff05-Feb-2025New South Wales secured an important One-Day Cup bonus point as Moises Henriques guided his side to a commanding seven-wicket win over Tasmania in Launceston.Chasing 206 for victory, the visitors always looked in control on Wednesday as Henriques delivered an unbeaten 71 from 83 balls. They reached 209 for 3 in just 38.3 overs, locking in the additional point that put them on top of the table with two regular-season matches left to play.Matthew Gilkes (46 off 63) and Oliver Davies (40 not out off 36) also delivered with the bat for the Blues. Davies produced a highlight when he smashed Aidan O’Connor over the UTAS Stadium roof.Josh Philippe set the tone for the NSW run chase, belting six boundaries in his 30 off 22 deliveries. He looked in fine touch before attempting to leave a rising Gabe Bell delivery that cannoned off his elbow and back down onto the stumps. Bell took 3 for 29 from 10 overs while the rest of the attack went wicketless while copping a battering from the Blues batters.Henriques’ composed knock included five fours and two sixes, and came after he earlier removed both Tasmania openers and finished with bowling figures of 2 for 31 from eight overs to help NSW bowl out Tasmania for 205 after NSW sent the hosts in to bat.Ben Dwarshuis also shone with the ball, claiming 4 for 39 from 8.1 overs including key middle-order wickets that slowed Tasmania’s progress.Caleb Jewell (37 off 42) and Jake Doran (34 off 62) were among the five batters who got starts for Tasmania, but none went on with the job.NSW quick Liam Hatcher provided a comical moment in the field when he fumbled a regulation catch at deep square-leg, stuck out a right boot to keep the ball alive and kicked it back up into his hand. The schoolyard hacky sack-style move was followed by a clumsy somersault after Hatcher had grasped the catch, which removed Raf MacMillan off Dwarshuis’ bowling, and was greeted by laughter from teammates. Both sides are back in One-Day Cup action on Thursday next week, with NSW taking on Queensland in Brisbane and Tasmania hosting Victoria in Hobart.

Same agent as Danilo: Rangers & Martin want to sign "excellent" free agent

Having put pen to paper to officially become the new Rangers manager, Russell Martin has instantly reportedly shifted his focus towards what would be a bargain swoop for the Gers.

Martin already targeting Rangers incomings

The former Southampton boss has got straight to work with the 49ers and is already looking to build a Rangers squad in his vision and one capable of catching Old Firm rivals Celtic. Together with sporting director Kevin Thelwell, Martin will be desperate to get off to the best possible start at Ibrox in the summer transfer window.

He wants to stay at Ibrox, but the decision could be made up for him.

By
Henry Jackson

Jun 10, 2025

Speaking to the club’s official media channels, Thelwell reiterated that success won’t come easy but it is a must at Rangers. He said: “This is a new chapter for Rangers, and while we recognise success won’t come easy, our goal is clear: we need to win. My focus is on delivering that, with discipline and ambition. We’ll give everything to move this club forward as quickly and sustainably as we can.”

The start of a new chapter may yet see the introduction of more new characters too. The rumours have been coming thick and fast as to who could become the first arrival of the Martin era, from Dor Turgeman to a player who the manager knows very well in Flynn Downes.

Southampton'sFlynnDownesin action with Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White

Using Martin’s Premier League links will likely prove key this summer if the Gers are to bridge the gap on Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. And Downes wouldn’t be a bad start. Martin worked with the midfielder at both Southampton and Swansea in a partnership which could be renewed at Ibrox this summer.

The midfielder’s not the only Premier League target that Rangers have on their radar, however. The Scottish giants have also reportedly turned their attention towards a free agent who just left Nottingham Forest.

Rangers and Martin targeting Toffolo

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Rangers and Martin are also targeting a deal to sign Harry Toffolo not long after he left Nottingham Forest at the end of his contract this summer.

The experienced left-back will therefore be available for nothing and could instantly jump ahead of the likes of Jefte and Ridvan Yilmaz in Rangers’ pecking order down that side. Meanwhile, if there are any concerns that negotiations will be difficult, then the fact that Toffolo is represented by the same agent as Rangers forward Danilo may ease those concerns.

Harry Toffolo

From the very start of his Nottingham Forest career in 2022, Toffolo found himself at the centre of praise. Welcoming the defender to the City Ground, former manager Steve Cooper said at the time: “Harry is an excellent addition to the squad and adds quality and depth to a position that we were keen to strengthen this summer.”

Now, it could be Martin’s turn to welcome the 29-year-old to his squad in what would be a solid way for Rangers to commence their summer business. An experienced defender who’s available at a bargain price, Toffolo is not one that the Gers will want to miss out on.

Shakib bowling action saga: BCB wait on results from Chennai before CT 2025 decision

Decision around Shakib’s action has a direct impact on Bangladesh’s Champions Trophy squad•Getty Images

Shakib Al Hasan is awaiting the result of a second test of his bowling action from Chennai in India after failing his previous assessment from UK’s Loughborough University that had left him suspended from bowling in top-flight domestic and international cricket.Shakib was reported for a suspect action during an English county match in September. This prompted the ECB’s action, and, in accordance with clause 11.3 of the ICC’s regulations for illegal bowling actions, his suspension was automatically recognised and enforced by the ICC in international cricket and by all national cricket federations in their respective domestic competitions.Shakib is expecting a result from the Chennai centre in a day or two, which is also keeping the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) from naming their Champions Trophy squad. Shakib is in consideration after board president Faruque Ahmed said on January 3 that he wants Shakib back in the team. It was also reported recently that Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto gave his nod to the BCB about Shakib’s return for ODIs.Related

Champions Trophy 2025: Shakib Al Hasan, and other topics on Bangladesh's selectors' plate

Shakib suspended from bowling in all top-level cricket, domestic and international

Shakib had been out of international cricket since he played the two Tests in India last year. He couldn’t travel to Bangladesh in the face of students’ protests. Shakib was a member of parliament of the Awami League government, which resigned from power in the face of student-led revolution in Bangladesh, on August 5.After the two Tests in India however, Shakib was reported for suspected action in England. The suspension came in December. He was already playing franchise cricket in UAE and Sri Lanka, as the BCB were also weighing his options for selection, to stay in line with Bangladesh’s interim government.BCB’s chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain said on Wednesday that he heard that Shakib has undergone a second bowling action test in Chennai, but couldn’t confirm the details.”It was very shocking to hear that Shakib couldn’t pass the bowling action test [at Loughborough],” Gazi said. “I will have to find out whether he has tested himself again. We have to wait for this information. The board hasn’t instructed us fully on Shakib. I think every minute counts. I am sure we can clarify this in a day or two.”Mohammad Salahuddin meanwhile said that he has given some tips over a video call to Shakib in the last few weeks to help him correct his bowling action issue.”He already went through the test,” Salahuddin told on Tuesday. “I know the A-Z of Shakib’s bowling. I couldn’t go and train him (in India). I think he knows what to do. We discussed a few things about what he has to do with his arm. We don’t need a big change in his bowling action. He can do it quickly too. But when an allegation comes, a person usually has to think about it.”Salahuddin said that Shakib couldn’t bowl with a correct action in an effort to impart more spin on the ball during the county game in Taunton in September. Shakib was trying to get some cricket with a red-ball ahead of Bangladesh’s tour of India.”I think it was due to extreme workload. Maybe he tried to impart more spin on the ball, for which he needed to use his upper body,” Salahuddin said. “It must have been one or two balls which came into question. When you can’t get strength from your legs, you have to drive from your arms. It is natural. I think he can fix it.”

The Ashes are within touching distance for Australia after Ashleigh Gardner’s maiden international century turned a stuttering innings into a comprehensive 86-run victory in Hobart to leave them 6-0 up and requiring just two points for retention.Gardner’s run-a-ball century rescued Australia from 59 for 4 in conjunction with Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath, the latter made a 38-ball fifty, then they were launched over 300 by a late onslaught from the recalled Georgia Wareham. In the chase, Tammy Beaumont and Nat Sciver-Brunt made half-centuries but both fell to Wareham in what became a starring return to the side. Then just as Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Amy Jones were raising hopes of a dramatic push towards the target, Phoebe Litchfield produced a stunning diving catch running back from cover to remove Wyatt-Hodge.After that, England faded quickly, losing 6 for 22 with Alana King taking a career-best 5 for 46 to make it nine wickets in the last two matches, and once again there was daylight between the sides. To cap her day, Gardner took one of the more remarkable boundary catches when she was able to toss the ball back at deep midwicket as she went over the rope, then dive full-length forward to grab the rebound. It all meant that England were left needing to win all three T20Is and the Test to reclaim the Ashes for the first time since 2014.To chase over 300, they needed someone to replicate Gardner’s superbly-paced century that had come up from 100 balls after she had sped through the 90s with consecutive boundaries off Sciver-Brunt. McGrath’s role was also vital with Australia’s innings still in the balance at 154 for 5 when she joined Gardner. Her form has come under scrutiny in recent times, as she has shifted down the order to No. 7, so this was a timely performance from the vice-captain.In all, 104 runs came off the final 10 overs in a formidable display of Australia’s batting depth. Sophie Ecclestone, who went for 17 off the last, finished with the second-most expensive figures of her ODI career with the top three all against Australia. In a frenetic start to the game, England called on the DRS three times inside the first four overs, burning both reviews but getting the call right when Litchfield gloved a pull down the leg side after she had made a positive start with three crisp boundaries.Shortly after they used up their reviews by going upstairs for a caught behind appeal against Ellyse Perry, she flicked a delivery off her pads straight to Lauren Filer at short fine leg with Lauren Bell’s muted celebration acknowledging it was more fortune than a plan.Alyssa Healy had not been able to go through the gears during the powerplay and fell shortly before the restrictions ended when she pulled Sciver-Brunt to deep midwicket. Australia’s situation became more precarious when Annabel Sutherland completed a lean one-day series as she drove to mid-off, a similar dismissal to the second game in Melbourne. The mantra of the Australian side is never to take a backward step even when faced with difficulties, and Gardner responded by lofting Ecclestone straight down the ground for six. Mooney then took two boundaries in three deliveries off Charlie Dean.Alana King took her maiden ODI five-for•Getty Images

Gardner brought up her half-century from 53 balls and Mooney from 63. However, Mooney couldn’t convert when she tried to clear the off side against Dean and could only sky into the ring. But what was an opening for England was soon closed off by the skill and power of the Gardner-McGrath alliance in what were the best batting conditions of the series.Megan Schutt struck in the first over of the chase when Maia Bouchier lofted to mid-off and England’s reply took a huge dent when Heather Knight edged behind with Healy taking a sharp chance standing up to the stumps.Beaumont and Sciver-Brunt rebuilt through a stand of 89 in 18 overs but with such a hefty total to chase the run-rate pressure was always mounting. Beaumont upped her strike rate with three boundaries in six balls to reach fifty but was bowled off her pads in Wareham’s first over in ODIs since last March. Not for the first time, Sciver-Brunt stood as the key figure. She went to a 53-ball fifty but couldn’t convert, beaten by a delivery from Wareham that skidded on into the stumps. While the required rate hovered around eight an over it was not out of sight for England and four boundaries in four balls between Wyatt-Hodge and Jones suggested they, like Australia, may be able to make hay in the closing overs. But then Wyatt-Hodge aimed to lift King over the off side, Litchfield ran back from cover, dived full length and held the catch as it came over her shoulder. Once again, Australia had seized a vital moment and with it were a step closer to seizing the Ashes.
