'Had I been captain maybe I wouldn't have scored all these runs'

Osman Samiuddin15-May-2017It remains one of the most enduring what-ifs of Younis Khan’s career: what if, in November 2009, he had not upped and left the captaincy? Where would he, and Pakistan cricket, be now had he continued?Pakistan cricket is no longer as obsessed with that one, in light of the successes of the eventual beneficiary of that decision, Misbah-ul-Haq. But the question has hounded Younis’ career since, up to and including this, his last series. And now, as he steps away from international cricket as Pakistan’s most prolific Test batsman, it seems he has found closure. “People say to me, you should’ve done more captaincy,” he told ESPNcricinfo.”But I think whatever happens, happens for the best. Had I been captain maybe I wouldn’t have scored all these runs. People think that maybe I carry these regrets, but no. Had I done more, who knows whether I would be where I am today? If I had been captain for so long, maybe I would’ve been too distracted by other duties to score as many runs as I did.”Despite leading Pakistan to the World Twenty20 title in 2009, Younis’ experience with the captaincy has been difficult. He turned it down first in 2007, having been groomed for it. In late 2006, as an interim captain, he had given it up in anger, only to accept it back a day later. When he resigned in 2009, it was under the weight of, effectively, a player revolt. And yet, over the last couple of years, he has spoken of another tilt at the captaincy, talk that has been encouraged by people around him.Certainly it is difficult to imagine him having done better as a batsman. Though his last series was a poor one, under Misbah’s captaincy, Younis scored nearly 5000 runs and more than doubled his century count: 18 in 53 Tests (16 in 65 before). It is a run that has established him as, arguably, Pakistan’s greatest Test batsman and one of the finest from anywhere in the modern age.”All the cricket I’ve played – for club, department, association, county, in Australia, wherever – when I’m gone if you ask any of them, they won’t be able to say that Younis Khan left something in the tank. I gave 200% everywhere I played.”Two-three years ago, I was about to retire but I got the motivation to try and get to 10,000 runs. As a captain, player, junior, senior, I put it all out there, whatever I had. Whatever I could, with bat, ball, in the field. No regrets either. We won a world title, we beat Australia, leveled a series in England. We performed, I performed so there’s nothing left that I really wanted to do.”So much does he feel he has given to the game that, unlike Misbah, he does not foresee a post-retirement attachment within the game. When he became captain in 2009, he had spoken keenly of helping set up a players’ association, something Pakistan’s cricketers have never known. That is not, for now, on the agenda.”Believe me – I think, in all, I’ve given 27-28 years of my life to cricket. So I have nothing in my mind about any future plans to get back into cricket. I don’t know if I’ll have any energy left after I leave to give to cricket.”A players’ association should happen for sure, but I don’t think I have the energy to be able to do something like this. We should do this, and if others start it up, then I will stand by them for sure.”One thing he will be doing plenty of is fishing, a pastime in which he often sought refuge during his career. “A lot of the dreams I had which I couldn’t get to while I was playing, I will now pursue. People think you achieve all of them in your career but actually this is a new career starting for me now.”

Best defensive buy since Kompany: Man City want to sign Ballon d'Or contender

Whenever Manchester City have lifted the Premier League title aloft during Pep Guardiola’s glittering reign to date, these major title wins have always been won on the basis of a stern defence, alongside possessing some top-notch attackers.

Indeed, City’s sizeable points haul of 98 come the end of the 2018/19 season saw just 23 goals given up. On the contrary, when fast forwarding to today’s choppy campaign, the usually stern champions have leaked a far higher 43 with three fixtures still left to play.

This could culminate in Guardiola changing up his defensive options soon to prepare for next season, with a fresh goalkeeper one target that’s surely on his mind.

Man City's pursuit of a new goalkeeper

The Spaniard has already been tinkering with his defensive set-up away from the potential of more new signings entering through the door, with faces such as Nico O’Reilly becoming a regular in the back four as an attack-focused full-back.

But, he won’t be done there when it comes to freshening up his XI, with goalkeeper targets such as Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa reportedly on the agenda.

FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

A move for Costa hasn’t got off the ground by all accounts, leaving City looking for other stoppers who could do a job over the expected departee of Ederson, with Paris St Germain star Gianluigi Donnarumma now listed as one of their main targets in between the sticks.

Indeed, reports from Italy suggest that Guardiola and Co are keen admirers of the 6 foot 5 ‘keeper who is just fresh off helping Luis Enrique’s men reach a Champions League final at the expense of Arsenal.

He could well be locking horns with the Gunners again very soon if a move to the Etihad comes to fruition, with City hopeful that a new presence in goal can work wonders, much like Vincent Kompany managed in defence over many celebrated years after joining way back in 2008.

Why Donnarumma could be the best defensive buy since Kompany

Obviously, it goes without saying that the Belgian centre-back is royalty in the light blue contingent of Manchester, with the now-retired defender a stalwart of many a successful City side even before Guardiola’s inspired arrival.

In total, the 89-time Belgium international would notch up a colossal 360 appearances for the Citizens, with a mammoth 167 wins also coming his way in the Premier League from 265 clashes.

A classy performer that was just designed for the big occasion, as is seen in his wonder goal versus Leicester City clinching his fourth and final top-flight success – Kompany also offered some much-needed defensive solidity in spades, with a bumper 94 clean sheets tallied up in Premier League action.

Donnarumma will hope he can walk into the building and be as transformative for City’s fortunes, with Ederson only keeping a weak ten clean sheets this campaign from 34 overall contests.

Whereas, the Italy captain – away from his heroics against Mikel Arteta’s men – has managed to pick up one more clean sheet than his City counterpart lining up for PSG, adding to his ever-growing career clean sheet total of 167 subsequently.

Once heralded as “world class” when starring for his nation by commentator Matteo Bonetti, Donnarumma’s addition to the ranks could also help City reclaim their authority as serial trophy winners, with the 26-year-old currently six trophies deep into his stay in the French capital, away from terrorising England during Italy’s 2021 Euro success.

Lauded further by Enrique as “one of the best goalkeepers in the world”, City would really show they mean business if they landed the alert ‘keeper.

Just remember the trophy-winning difference Alisson made at Liverpool; Donnarumma could be their equivalent in the present day, boosting Pep’s defence just as Kompany did all those years ago.

Arsenal to "move quickly" for £15m forward after ex-Real Madrid scout's advice

Arsenal could now swoop fast for a bargain forward signing after getting advice from a top former Real Madrid scout behind-the-scenes, according to an intriguing new report.

Arsenal set for season-defining Champions League tie against Real Madrid

Mikel Arteta called tonight’s clash with Real in the Champions League his biggest-ever game in management, which highlights the serious importance of their two-legged tie against the European champions.

With nothing left to play for domestically and Liverpool on course to become Premier League champions, all eyes are on whether Arsenal can make history and upset Carlo Ancelotti’s Champions League heavyweights.

If Arsenal can knock Real out of the competition, they could even be considered favourites to win their first-ever Champions League title, and Arteta is taking tonight’s first leg very seriously.

“100%”, said Arteta when asked if their first game against Real is his biggest night in management.

“A joy to prepare the game, to look at them, just to look at the reaction of people and how we feel about ourselves coming into a game of this magnitude. The excitement around the club, the people, this is the stage that we want to be and where Arsenal has to be consistently. We are very proud to be there and now we’re very ready tomorrow to deliver.

“I think we deserve it [luck] but we have to earn it, and we have to earn it again tomorrow evening. We’re going to put all the ingredients, everything that is in our hands to play the game that we want and to take the game in the direction that we want. In order to achieve that, we’re going to need our people playing every single ball with us and that’s going to make a huge difference, because that’s something that is really needed.”

Attention is also turning to Andrea Berta’s first summer transfer window as their new sporting director, and the Italian is being helped by ex-Real scout Paolo Xavier behind the scenes.

Arsenal could "move quickly" for Vasco de Gama starlet Rayan

That is according to TEAMtalk, who state Arsenal have now joined the race for Vasco de Gama sensation Rayan.

The Brazil Under-20 international is apparently a recommendation of Xavier, who formerly worked at the Bernabeu and is now a “top” scout at the Emirates Stadium.

Rayan for Vasco da Gama.

Arsenal could “move quickly” for Rayan after also learning that the South American forward has a tantalising £15 million release clause written into his contract, with Xavier identifying him as a target and the north Londoners “seriously” considering a deal.

However, they will indeed have to act fast, as Tottenham, Liverpool, Brighton, Bayern Munich and Fiorentina are all believed to have the teenager on their radar.

Nottingham Forest are also believed to be expressing an interest in Rayan, so this could turn out to be a pretty hectic battle for his signature this summer.

Walk-Off Wagers: MLB Best Bets Today (Freddy Peralta Prop to Bet; Trust Mariners on Road)

The MLB season rolls on as we get closer and closer to the All-Star break, and there are a few bets I’m looking to make on a shortened slate on Monday.

I’m eyeing two right-handed starters on Monday and their strikeout props, as Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta and Philadelphia Phillies star Aaron Nola both could be in line to put up big K numbers.

Plus, there is a moneyline underdog that I believe has some sneaky value on Monday night.

Let’s break down these picks to kick off the week in baseball!

MLB Best Bets Today

  • Freddy Peralta OVER 5.5 Strikeouts (-150)
  • Seattle Mariners Moneyline (-108) vs. Tampa Bay Rays
  • Aaron Nola OVER 5.5 Strikeouts (-165)

Freddy Peralta OVER 5.5 Strikeouts (-150)

Peralta has been one of the best strikeout pitchers in all of baseball this season, ranking in the 92nd percentile in strikeout percentage and whiff percentage, averaging 11.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

He gets a matchup with the Texas Rangers on Monday, who average just 7.57 strikeouts per game this season, but that still gives Peralta some leeway at his current K number.

Over his 15 starts, Peralta has cleared 5.5 K’s 12 times, and he only has one start (a game he lasted just 3.1 innings) where he finished with fewer than five strikeouts.

That gives us a solid floor to lean on when it comes to this prop, and I expect Peralta’s season-long strikeout prowess to shine even against a tough offense.

Seattle Mariners Moneyline (-108) vs. Tampa Bay Rays

The Seattle Mariners are holding a solid lead in the AL West entering Monday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays, who are just fourth in the AL East.

Can Seattle pull off a road win?

I believe so.

Bryan Woo gets the ball for the Mariners in this matchup, and he’s led the Mariners to a 6-1 record in his seven outings this season.

The righty has not allowed more than three runs in a single start this season, posting a 1.67 ERA and 2.83 Fielding Independent Pitching.

I think that gives him a huge edge over Tampa Bay starter Taj Bradley, who comes into this start with a 4.06 ERA in eight outings. The Rays are 4-4 this season when Bradley is on the mound.

Both of these teams rank in the bottom 10 in the league in OPS, so I’ll gladly trust the better starter on Monday night.

Aaron Nola OVER 5.5 Strikeouts (-165)

The strikeout numbers haven't been what you’d expect from Nola this season (he’s in the 52nd percentile in strikeout percentage), but I like him to clear his prop against the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

Detroit averages 8.84 strikeouts per game (22nd in Major League Baseball), which means Nola doesn’t have to lead this offense to more K’s than normal – like Peralta may have to – to clear this prop.

Nola is coming off a six-strikeout game, and he’s cleared this prop in four of his last eight games.

I wouldn’t call this my favorite prop of the night, but the Tigers have struggled enough at avoiding the punchout that I’ll bet on Nola to clear this number.

Their next Eze: Berta agrees deal to sign “exciting” new star for Arsenal

If you ignore his underwhelming display on Sunday, it has largely been a positive start to life at Arsenal for Eberechi Eze.

Despite it taking him a little while to get up to speed with what Mikel Arteta wants from him, the former Crystal Palace star has already amassed five goals and four assists for the team in 18 games.

Moreover, he’s already etched his name into the club’s history books by scoring an unreal hat-trick in the North London Derby, the first anyone has scored since 1978.

So, fans should be delighted about reports linking Arsenal with someone who could be the club’s future Eze.

Arsenal target their future Eze

With the transfer window reopening next month, Arsenal have once again begun being linked with a host of talented players.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

For example, Nottingham Forest’s £79m Murillo has been touted for a move to the Emirates, as has his £120m teammate Elliot Anderson.

Yet, as talented and potentially game-changing as the two Forest men are, neither one could be described as Eze-like, nor a long-term heir to him, unlike Holger Quintero.

Yes, according to a recent ESPN report, Arsenal are looking to sign the highly rated teenage talent.

In fact, the report has revealed that the club have already agreed a deal in principle for the midfielder and his twin brother, Edwin Quintero.

The two 16-year-olds are said to be in London at the moment to iron out the final details of the move, with an official announcement to come at a later date.

They will then move to the Emirates in August 2027, when they are both 18, due to rules around foreign-born youngsters.

Holger Quintero is unlikely to make an impact on the team for some time, but based on what those in the know say about him, he could prove to be Arsenal’s next Eze.

Why Holger Quintero will be Arsenal's next Eze

Now, the first thing to say is that given Eze is still just 27 and in fine form, there is little chance of Quintero coming in to replace him.

However, five or six years from now, when the former is ageing out, the latter could be the ideal player to step in and add creativity to the midfield.

At least it sounds like that is the case based on what those in the know are saying, like Ben Mattinson.

The Como scout has described the 16-year-old as a “skilful attacking midfielder with 1v1 prowess to take on players,” which sounds an awful lot like the former Palace star.

Moreover, he highlights that, in addition to his close control, the teenager also has an “excellent weight of pass” and is a “decisive creator with a killer final ball.”

That combination of being a direct threat while also creating ample opportunities for teammates is just like the Englishman at his best.

It’s not just Mattinson raving about the young phenom, though, as U23 scout Antonio Mango has described him as someone who is blessed with “high technical & intellect qualities” and is “effective in all thirds of the pitch.”

Finally, if that still isn’t enough, respected talent scout Jacek Kulig has been bold enough to describe the midfielder as “one of the most exciting U17s in South America.”

Ultimately, while it is too early in his career, Quintero looks like an exceptional superstar in the making, and his combination of incredible close control and game-breaking passing means he could be the perfect long-term heir to Eze.

New York Red Bulls part ways with coach Sandro Schwarz, promote former Canada star Julian de Guzman to head of sport

The New York Red Bulls parted ways with coach Sandro Schwarz following a disappointing season, the club announced on Monday. The Red Bulls failed to make the postseason for the first time in 15 years after reaching the MLS Cup final in 2024. The club promoted former Canada star Julian de Guzman to head of sport.

New York Red BullsLeadership transition

The changes come in a leadership overhaul by the Red Bulls. In addition to Schwarz's exit, the club also announced Jochen Schneider, current head of sport, has decided to return to Europe and that de Guzman's promotion was part of a succession plan.

Schwarz's departure comes after a strong first season at the club. Although there were struggles at times last year, the club went on an incredible run to reach the playoffs. The Red Bulls upset the Columbus Crew, NYCFC and Orlando City SC – all higher seeds. After narrowly losing the MLS Cup to the LA Galaxy, the team was expected to contend this season.

They brought in Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to solve long-term issues at striker. Despite the Cameroon international notching 17 goals and five assists in his inaugural MLS campaign, the team struggled to find consistency throughout the year. With their season hanging in the balance, Red Bulls head of global soccer Jurgen Klopp visited the team ahead of its derby match against NYCFC – which the Red Bulls lost 3-2.

"I would like to thank Sandro for the last two seasons, especially coaching this team during a memorable 2024 playoff run. His dedication to the job was outstanding, and I truly wish him nothing but the best in his future coaching endeavors," Schneider said in a statement.

The club will now search for a new coach, with de Guzman expected to lead the process.

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport'Perfect person to take the helm'

Schneider leaves the Red Bulls after spending three years with the club. He was instrumental in bringing in star additions Emil Forsberg and Choupo-Moting. He also played a role in prioritizing the youth movement at the club, with 12 academy players on the first team roster.

Scheider served as a mentor to de Guzman, who has held the GM role for the Red Bulls II team since 2024.

"It has been an incredible privilege and honor to lead this extraordinary organization and work alongside such talented individuals,” said Schneider. “Over the past few years, I've poured my heart into this club, and I am immensely proud of what we've accomplished together. Mentoring Julian has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my time here, and I have no doubt that he is the perfect person to take the helm and lead the Red Bulls into their next chapter.

"While I will deeply miss this club, my family must come first, and I need to be with them. That said, I will always remain close to Julian and the Red Bulls, and I look forward to seeing the team’s continued success.”

New York Red Bulls President Marc de Grandpere thanked Schneider for his contributions.

"We are deeply grateful for all that Jochen has brought to our organization during his time here,” said de Grandpré. “Jochen’s expertise and leadership were instrumental in assembling a team that has competed at the highest level. While we are saddened to see him depart, he will always be part of the family. We fully respect his decision and wish him and his family all the best in the days and months ahead."

Getty Images SportCanadian trailblazer

De Guzman's ascension from sporting director to head of sport continues his career as a trailblazer in Canadian soccer. He was the first player from the country to play in Spain's La Liga, with Deportivo. He also starred for Toronto FC in MLS. He had 89 caps for the Reds.

He oversaw a Red Bulls II side that has reached the Eastern Conference final. He also founded Simcoe Rovers County FC, who compete in League 1 Ontario.

Former New York Cosmos and Portland Timbers boss Gio Savarese could emerge as an option for the Red Bulls. The manager is said to be interested in the job, according to The Athletic.
