The ICC intends to publish a full schedule for the men’s 2023 ODI World Cup “as soon as we possibly can,” according to their chief executive, Geoff Allardice. The tournament hosted by India is expected to start in four months’ time, with venues and fixtures still unconfirmed. The schedule for the 2019 ODI World Cup in England and Wales was released on April 26, 2018, 13 months before the opening game, while the schedule for the 2015 tournament in Australia and New Zealand was released on July 30, 2013 – a full 18 months before the first match. The fixtures for this year’s World Cup, however, remain unknown. ESPNcricinfo reported in March that the tournament is expected to run from October 5 to November 19, but the ICC has not publicly confirmed any dates.Related

World Cup schedule to be unveiled during WTC final
Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, had recently said that the schedule would be unveiled during the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval, but Allardice did not commit to that timeline during an interview on the BBC’s ; and ESPNcricinfo understands the fixtures may not be made public until next week.”I think even today (Wednesday) we might be receiving the schedule from the hosts, and we’ve just got a bit of consultation to do with all the participating teams and the broadcasters. Then we’ll be publishing that as soon as we possibly can,” Allardice said. “When we put on events, we very much work hand in hand with the hosts.”And in some places, there’s a lot of consultation that needs to take place, both within the cricket system and with governments, etc. There’s a lot of responsibility on a host to deliver a good event, and they’ve got to go through the right checks and balances.”Allardice was asked whether Pakistan’s willingness to play in India had any bearing on the apparent delay in the fixtures being announced, but he declined to elaborate.”Until I see the schedule… I’m waiting, and I’m hoping that I’ll see something in the next day or two on that,” he said. “Our events team is very experienced at putting on cricket events in all different countries, and you control what you control.”And I think that’s the approach that our team is taking, and they’re working on the things that they can progress for the event. The moment we have that information, we’ll be pushing on it at a rate of knots.”
Last week Arsenal’s chances of winning the Carabao Cup were dented big time by Alexander Isak.
No one should really be surprised by that. The Swede is one of the most in-form players in Europe right having scored ten goals in his last nine matches across all competitions.
The Gunners have regularly been linked with his services and he showed Mikel Arteta and Co exactly what they were missing by scoring at the Emirates. Arteta even admitted after the game that it showed what can happen when you have “real quality” at the top end of the pitch.
Alexander Isak celebrates for Newcastle
So, the club’s head coach is all too aware that the forward line needs boasting but you do get a sense that they will hope to get by with what they already have.
The trouble is that their best player in Bukayo Saka is going to be out for some time with a hamstring injury and his deputy, Ethan Nwaneri, is now also injured. It’s all rather typical.
Arsenal's transfer shortlist in 2025
As you would expect at this time of the year, there have been plenty of rumours surrounding who could enter the Emirates Stadium this year.
The most prominent of names is Isak but with Newcastle reportedly demanding a fee of something close to £150m, that isn’t an easy deal.
Nico Williams of Athletic Bilbao has been touted over the last two transfer windows.
Over the summer he was only moving if dream club Barcelona came calling and this January, the Gunners may have to make him one of their top earners to get him out of Spain. That said, Arteta ‘wants to sign’ the player this month.
This January is already about taking market opportunities and two of them are set to pass them by. Whether there was any interest, however, is unknown.
Indeed, red-hot Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush is close to a move to Manchester City while Napoli’s Georgian superstar winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia looks as though he’s on his way to PSG.

So, where else could they turn to in 2025?
Arsenal's best Nico Williams alternative
Reports prior to Christmas suggested that Arsenal had approached the representatives of AC Milan sensation Rafael Leao regarding a possible move.
A formal offer was not made but it was made clear that Leao is far more likely to move in the summer.
AC Milan's Rafael Leao reacts
Boasting an almighty release clause of £145m, a move could be made cheaper and more attainable by his rocky relationship with new head coach Paulo Fonseca.
Arsenal supporters might well be saddened to hear another move being played down as a potential summer opportunity but the fact of the matter is that signing new players in January is difficult.
The Gunners will lose out big time in the back end of this season but it’s clear they are set to attack the summer window hard.
Rafael Leao
By luring Leao away from the San Siro, he could well be a better addition than both Isak and Williams.
Supporters will, of course, look at Isak’s numbers and wonder why he isn’t the best signing. You can certainly make a case that he should be the number one priority. He’s Premier League-proven and can’t stop scoring.
That said, Arsenal have shown they can challenge and score plenty of goals with Kai Havertz in the team. In 2023/24, he scored eight goals and assisted seven in just 18 outings. Even this term he’s got eight in 21 which isn’t a bad tally at all.
Of course, the Gunners need more goals but they perhaps lack more quality in wide areas. Saka is the only consistent player in that regard with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard having contributed a combined ten goals and five assists. For context, that’s seven fewer than Saka’s overall tally.
On that evidence, Arsenal need an explosive winger and in Leao – a “world-beater” in the words of data analyst Ben Mattinson, they’d have the perfect profile.
Further described as a a player who’s like an “early Thierry Henry”, in the words of Milan coach Stefano Pioli, cutting inside from the left and beating defenders for fun, his output is certainly better than Williams. Here’s how the two compare based on their numbers across 2023/24 and 2024/25.

As we can see, the two are pretty similar players. They love to carry the ball and take players on and they both love to create.
That being said, it’s Leao who is the more regular scorer, it’s the Milan star who takes players on more efficiently and it’s the Portuguese sensation who makes more key passes and progressive passes. That all suggests he could be just what the doctor ordered when it comes to improving Arsenal’s attacking output on the left hand-side of the pitch.

In the Premier League this term, they are the team who attack down the left the fewest times but signing a player like Leao would balance the team out and provide more high-percentage opportunities for the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Havertz to score from.
Perhaps he is the answer instead of Isak and Williams in the summer.

Durham confirm signings of Ackermann, Parkinson
Leicestershire had started the season well and sit third in Division Two ahead of the resumption of the County Championship this weekend. One of their two wins out of seven – there have been four draws – was a first victory at Headingley since 1910.However, they have since won just two Vitality Blast matches out of 11, and sit bottom of the North Group. They are out of contention for the quarter-finals and likely to win the wooden spoon.Nixon’s comes after it was confirmed that three first-team players will leave Grace Road at the end of the season. Seamer Chris Wright is heading to Sussex on a two-year deal, while left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson and allrounder Colin Ackermann have signed with Durham on three-year contracts.Assistant coach Alfonso Thomas and batting consultant James Taylor have been placed in temporary charge ahead of Friday’s night fixture against Northamptonshire in the Blast, while Peter Handscomb will deputise as captain in place of Ackermann, who has “stepped back from the role”.”I have seen first-hand the work that is going on behind the scenes to strengthen the squad and we hope to be able to provide some positive updates very soon,” Thorpe added.”Now is a time for togetherness, and for us all to get behind Alfonso Thomas, James Taylor, and the players ahead of our clash with Northants tonight and for the remainder of the season.”Nixon did not offer a comment when contacted by ESPNcricinfo.
Eight single figure scores in his last 11 innings the catalyst as NSW face South Australia in the final Sheffield Shield round trying to avoid a winless season
ESPNcricinfo staff11-Mar-2023New South Wales have made the bold decision to drop their captain and two-Test batter Kurtis Patterson from their Sheffield Shield team for the final match of the season against South Australia as the Blues try and avoid a winless season.Since starting the Shield season with scores of 72 not out, 3, 40, 25 and 122 not out, Patterson has scored just 155 runs at an average of 14.09 in his last 11 innings with one half-century. Eight of those scores have been single figures including 1 and 9 in NSW’s last Shield loss to Victoria in Albury.Stand-in coach Greg Shipperd, who took over from Phil Jaques in late November after the former Test opener was sacked following a horror start to the season, made the bold decision to drop Patterson alongside the NSW chairman of selectors and head of male cricket Michael Klinger.”Our batting group have been inconsistent recently in delivering the runs necessary to establish the match positions we were looking for,” Shipperd said.”We recognise it is a difficult decision to pass on your captain but we are confident Kurtis will regather and draw purpose from this call into the future.”It was decided to support consistent and inform batters in this season’s last fixture, with the currency being runs.”Moises Henriques will stand in as captain for the match against South Australia at Karen Rolton Oval. The Blues look set to make five changes. Blake Nikitaris has also been dropped while Trent Copeland has retired. Daniel Hughes has a calf injury and Liam Hatcher is out with a foot issue.Jason Sangha, Ryan Hackney, Ryan Hadley and Ben Dwarshuis have been included in the squad while last week’s 12th man Blake MacDonald is in-line to make his Shield debut.Shipperd emphasised the selection changes were based on performance at the lower levels.”Ryan Hackney has been in the Blues team previously and has averaged over 65 in Second Xl this season,” Shipperd said.”Blake MacDonald was in the squad with us for the last match, although he didn’t play. He has had a phenomenal summer, scoring consecutive Second Xl centuries for ACT / NSW Country as well as 177 not out against the touring West Indies side. This week in the match between NSW Metro and NSW/ACT Country he scored in the 90’s twice.”He was given feedback earlier in the season and asked to score more runs and he has more than done that. Those two guys completely demanded selection.”Similarly, Jason Sangha was left out of our last match and went away and scored plenty of runs in this week’s Second Xl match.”Ryan Hadley is another who has put the form on the board with an extremely dominant Premier Cricket season.”NSW Shield squad vs South Australia: Ollie Davies, Ben Dwarshuis, Jack Edwards, Matthew Gilkes, Chris Green, Ryan Hackney, Ryan Hadley, Moises Henriques (c), Hayden Kerr, Blake MacDonald, Jason Sangha, Chris Tremain

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The Special One didn't name the player, but he did say the ace was pushing 45-years-old. Mourinho's Chelsea were never short on confidence, taking on their manager's persona en route to a then-record 95 point tally.
WHAT JOSE MOURINHO SAID
Mourinho said: "One of these players of 2004-05, a few weeks ago, when Chelsea played Arsenal. One of the guys wrote me a message. I won’t tell you who it is, but the guy is now, I say, 45 years old, something like that. All of them are more or less 45. And one of them wrote to me, it was not John or Frank, and told me ‘boss, if you got together the 2004-05 team now and went on a training camp for two weeks, we would beat the current Chelsea team’.
"Of course, it was a joke. But this was a message of we were so good, we were so, so strong that 45 years old, we train for two weeks and we beat the current Chelsea team. Between us, we are still a team.”

West Ham United are now thinking about signing a Premier League player alongside their move for Brian Brobbey, with the Hammers widely believed to be in serious talks over a deal for the latter as Graham Potter looks to reinforce his attacking options.
West Ham in negotiations to sign Brian Brobbey on loan
On Friday morning, a piece in De Telegraaf shared news of West Ham’s “serious” attempt to sign Brobbey on loan with an obligation to buy.

The Netherlands international has emerged as a top target for West Ham, despite previous reports that their most likely striker signing of the window was RB Leipzig ace Andre Silva (ExWHUemployee), but Potter’s side were also believed to be looking at alternatives to the 29-year-old.
“We had continued our talks with Andre Silva over a loan move to the summer,” said club insider Ex (via West Ham Way).

“The loan deal would potentially have an option at the end of it to make the deal permanent. Talks will continue today but at the moment other options are being considered as well. As I’ve been saying for a while now, I think this is the easiest deal to complete, and one we may chose to do as a temporary measure that could turn out to be a bargain.”
One of those alternatives in Brobbey is now being really coveted by West Ham, with De Telegraaf reporter Mike Verweij writing that the east Londoners have made a proposal to sign him on loan with an obligation to buy outright after contacting both the player and Ajax.
Fabrizio Romano backs West Ham’s strong interest in signing Brobbey, claiming that Tottenham have backed out of the race and Potter’s side are very keen on snapping up the 22-year-old.
However, Brobbey isn’t their only potential January incoming, as West Ham want a new defender to.
West Ham considering January deal for Adam Webster
According to reliable journalist Jack Rosser, formerly of The Evening Standard, Brighton’s Adam Webster is now a target for the Irons at centre-back.
Indeed, it is believed that West Ham are considering a January move for Webster, who cost the Seagulls £20 million to sign from Bristol City. It remains to be seen what Fabian Hurzeler’s side would demand for the Englishman, but he has just 18 months remaining on his deal.
Webster could be a solid option for Potter, who worked with the 30-year-old during their time together at the Amex, but it is worth noting that he’s barely featured this season due to thigh problems.
Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha has said he has tried to give his players “psychological safety” and ensure that the dressing room remains a place where they can freely open up and have conversations. He believes that this environment, where players feel encouraged even if they have failed once or twice, is going to help bring the best out of the team.Hathurusingha said he is trying to create an atmosphere where players aren’t worried about what their team-mates, coaches and selectors would be thinking about them. He is trying to build trust within this bubble that is often fraught with undue pressure.”If you can create the environment where the players can do their best without worrying about outcome, [and] repercussions – not only from coaches or selectors, even from their peers,” Hathurusingha said. “If they can be free to try things; if they fail, they are still okay. They are the same players, and we trust them.Related

Uncapped Rishad, Jaker in Bangladesh squad for Ireland T20I series
“I think that’s the biggest change that [has] happened recently. The other coaches also mentioned to me that’s the biggest change. That’s what I am trying to create as well. I know that if you create an environment like that, the only way forward is if they can do their best. If their best is not good enough on some days, we will lose. That’s the game.”In his second stint as head coach, Hathurusingha has overseen two wins in his first three series. Bangladesh beat England 3-0 in a T20I series before trouncing Ireland 2-0 in ODIs, with one game washed out.Hathurusingha said nothing except the environment around the Bangladesh dressing room seems to have changed since his return to the post, and that the players’ “value doesn’t diminish” even if results don’t go in their favour.”Only the environment [has] changed a little bit inside the dressing room, and in the way we speak and what we talk about,” he said. “I try to bring some psychological safety around the group. I make sure to tell them that just because of the results – whether they do well or fail – their value doesn’t diminish.”We look at them with the same mindset. They are valuable. We select them for their skillset. Other than that, I don’t think anything has changed. I don’t know what happened before, but their skills are the same.”File photo: Rishad Hossain has recently spent a lot of time bowling in the Bangladesh nets•Raton Gomes/BCB
Hathurusingha stressed on aggression in every aspect on the field as well as in selection, without worrying about results. That was testified by Bangladesh posting their highest ODI total in the first match against Ireland, only to surpass that score two days later.”I don’t know if this is the new era, but we want to play aggressive cricket,” Hathurusingha said. “It doesn’t mean hitting the ball the farthest we can. [Rather] aggressive in every sense of the word: selection, field placing, body language, fielding, batting, [and] tactics.”We don’t worry about the outcome. We want to play the best way we can. When we play with aggression and freedom, Bangladesh team has always done well. That’s the way forward for us.”Another aggressive move was the selection of uncapped legspinner Rishad Hossain for the T20Is against Ireland despite his having bowled just 5.1 overs in competitive cricket this season before taking two wickets in seven overs in a 50-over warm-up against Ireland.Rishad hasn’t played a single BPL match, but has recently spent a lot of time bowling in the Bangladesh nets. During Hathurusingha’s first stint in 2014, he had backed legspinner Jubair Hossain’s inclusion in the senior team; he is doing the same with Rishad now, as he firmly believes that legspin is an aggressive option in T20s.”It is a new beginning for him. We think that his skillset is good enough,” Hathurusingha said. “There’s something special that we can develop in the long run. That’s the main idea behind [his selection]. Whatever happens – whether he does well or not – we are trying to find some attacking spinners going forward.”However, there was no place for batter Afif Hossain in the T20I squad for the first time in three years. After amassing 344 runs in the BPL this year – the most by a batter from his side – he was dropped for the third T20I against England last week, and now finds himself out of both white-ball squads. His last six ODI innings include four single-digit scores, and innings of only 23 and 15 in the other two outings. Hathurusingha said Afif needs runs under his belt to return to the team.”He has to what everyone else does: go and score runs. I have told him which areas to improve,” he said. “If he does that, [and] if there’s a place available, he will be treated as anyone else. Of course [he was dropped because of his performance], not because of his face. Anyone is in or out because of his performance, as well as sometimes tactically if we want to do something different.”

Once again turning their attention towards future stars, Brighton & Hove Albion have reportedly made preliminary contact to sign an 18-year-old forward who could replace Evan Ferguson.
Brighton transfer news
The Seagulls are already set to miss out on one young talent this month it seems, with Vitor Reis reportedly edging closer and closer to Manchester City despite Brighton initially taking the lead in the race to sign the Brazilian central defender. So, they’ll undoubtedly be keen to avoid a repeat of that failure and complete what would be a vintage move from those in Sussex by welcoming a future star before the end of the window.
Palmeiras'VitorReisin action
Fabian Hurzeler’s side represent an attractive squad to become a part of too, as highlighted in their recent thrashing of Norwich City in the FA Cup. Advancing through to the next round to match their impressive rise into 10th in the Premier League so far this season, Brighton remain a side to watch under the youngest manager in the division’s history.
Away from the action, meanwhile, the Seagulls have also seemingly been busy. According to reports in Spain, Brighton have made preliminary contact to sign Christian Kofane from Spanish second division side Albacete this month.
The 18-year-old forward has emerged onto Brighton’s radar – which rarely misses such talent – and could soon find himself on his way to the Premier League as a result.
Brighton now plotting move to sign "incredible" new Premier League winner
He would be an impressive coup…
ByTom Cunningham Jan 10, 2025
Of course, it’s interesting to see the Seagulls linked with a young forward amid recent speculation over Evan Ferguson’s future. The Irishman has struggled to reach the same heights as his initial breakthrough in the last year or so and has been linked with a move away to the likes of West Ham United as a result. If Brighton now welcome a young striker, his future may be thrown into greater doubt than ever.
"Jewell" Kofane is one to watch
Described as a “jewell” by Spanish journalist Carlos Gomez, Kofane is undoubtedly one to watch – not least because of Real Madrid’s reported interest. The European giants could yet rival Brighton in pursuit of the young forward in what those in Sussex will hope ends in a sensational victory against a club of Madrid’s calibre.
The fact that interest has arrived before Kofane has even made his first-team debut for Albacete paints the picture of an emerging talent destined to reach the very top.
Brighton have already seen one European giant swoop in ahead of them in the race to sign teenage sensation Reis. Now, they must hope to fend off an even greater club in Real Madrid if they want to secure Kofane’s signature and a star striker for years to come as a result this month. The race looks destined to only heat up in the coming weeks.
