Rodgers must cash in on Celtic flop who earns more than Scales

Celtic have made a name for themselves as a club that excels at developing and selling on talented young players, with Matt O’Riley the latest player to benefit from the stepping stone.

As much as the Hoops would rather not be a middle ground for players who want to play in the major leagues across Europe, that is where they are and they have been making the most of that position over the last ten years or so.

The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama, Fraser Forster, Odsonne Edouard, Moussa Dembele, and Kieran Tierney, among many others, all spent time in Glasgow before sealing moves across Europe.

Virgil van Dijk

Celtic sold Portuguese winger Jota to Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad for £25m in the summer of 2023, and sold O’Riley to Brighton & Hove Albion for a fee of more than £25m earlier this year.

This means that the Hoops have raked in more than £50m from two player sales since the start of last season, alongside the departues of Carl Starfelt and Liel Abada, to Celta Vigo and Charlotte respectively.

However, not every young player who arrives at Parkhead is able to make that next step, and they may be about to cash in on one who failed to establish himself in Glasgow.

The latest on Alexandro Bernabei's future

Argentine left-back Alexandro Bernabei was sent out on loan to Brazilian side Internacional back in March and is set to remain at the club until the turn of the year.

According to The Scottish Sun, Internacional would like to sign the 24-year-old full-back on a permanent deal in the upcoming January transfer window.

The report claims that they are due to fly to Europe for a number of recruitment meetings and they want to have talks with Celtic chiefs in order to thrash out an agreement to keep the defender on a permanent basis.

Celtic defender Alexandro Bernabei.

It states that his contract with the Scottish giants is not due to expire until the summer of 2027 and that puts the club in a relatively strong position in negotiations, as they are not under any pressure to cash in on him for an insignificant fee.

Bernabei joined the Hoops from Lanus for a reported fee of £3.75m in 2022 under Ange Postecoglou, and it remains to be seen how much of that they would be able to recoup from the Brazilian outfit.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

One thing is for sure, though, and that is that Brendan Rodgers must ruthlessly cash in on the flop, as he reportedly earns £5.5k-per-week, which is even more than current first-team star Liam Scales.

How much Liam Scales earns for Celtic

The Ireland international reportedly earns £5k-per-week, £500 less each week in comparison to Bernabei, and has provided great value for that wage since the start of last season.

After his loan spell with Aberdeen in the 2022/23 campaign, Rodgers decided to provide the left-footed titan with an opportunity to stake a claim for a place in the Celtic first-team, and he grasped the opportunity with both hands.

Liam Scales in action for Celtic.

He established a partnership with Cameron Carter-Vickers and went on to play a whopping 45 senior games in all competitions last season for the Hoops.

The 26-year-old colossus played 34 times in the Scottish Premiership for the Bhoys and helped the team to keep 14 clean sheets, winning 63% of his duels against opposition attackers in that time.

His rock-solid performances at the heart of the defence earned him a place in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year, alongside teammates Carter-Vickers, Callum McGregor, and Matt O’Riley.

As you can see in the table above, Scales has also enjoyed a strong start to the current Premiership season, despite competition from Auston Trusty for his starting spot.

The Irish brute has been even more dominant than he was last term in the division, winning a higher percentage of his duels on the deck and in the air.

Scales’ 45 Premiership appearances, dominant displays, and Team of the Year inclusion, since the start of last season show that he has provided great value for his £5k-per-week, and the same cannot be said of Bernabei with his £5.5k-per-week.

Why Celtic should sell Bernabei

Rodgers must ruthlessly cash in on the Celtic dud when the January transfer window opens for business, amid these planned talks with Internacional, as he failed to make the grade during his time in Glasgow.

In the 2022/23 campaign, after being brought in by Postecoglou for £3.75m, Bernabei only managed 15 appearances, including nine starts, in the Premiership for the Scottish giants.

The left-footed defender was dribbled past 14 times in nine starts and gave away one penalty, whilst he also lost a whopping 60% of his physical duels, which shows that he was a liability defensively as opposition players found it far too easy to get the better of him.

Celtic left-back Alexandro Bernabei.

Bernabei was then handed eight league appearances by Rodgers in the 2023/24 campaign and was dribbled past five times and lost 53% of his duels in three starts.

His performances clearly did not impress the Northern Irish head coach, who sanctioned a loan move to Internacional from March until the end of 2024.

As you can see in the table above, Bernabei has made a big impact in the final third from a left-back position in the Brazilian top-flight this year, and made numerous tackles and interceptions per game on average.

However, his issues with being dribbled past too often and losing the majority of his duels are still present, which does not suggest that he would fare much better if given another chance at Celtic.

Therefore, Rodgers should get this £5.5k-per-week wages off the books and attempt to recoup some of the £3.75m spent on him by cashing in on the flop at the earliest available opportunity.

Is it Jaedyn Shaw time? More opportunities for Alyssa Thompson and Lily Yohannes? Projecting Emma Hayes' USWNT SheBelieves Cup Starting XI vs Australia

With key players out and Hayes seeking to mix and match, GOAL looks at how the USWNT could line up against Australia

The SheBelieves Cup is a sprint, not a marathon and, at this level, sprints require rotation. U.S. women's national team head coach Emma Hayes acknowledged that by calling in an extra outfield player to this camp, with just two goalkeepers. For the USWNT to get through two more games, they'll need just about everyone.

Hayes unleashed a few surprises for the USWNT's opener, a 2-0 win over Colombia headlined by goals from Catarina Macario and Ally Sentnor. The latter, in particular, was one of the more surprising starters in that game and she responded by netting her first USWNT goal. There are plenty of other young players in search of similar breakouts, but Hayes has some difficult decisions to make when balancing this XI.

Changes are coming for Sunday's match against Australia, which kicks off at 5 p.m. ET in Phoenix. The only question is how many? With just a few days in between games, and just a few more before Wednesday's match against Japan, Hayes will certainly mix and match.

It'll be a balancing act of youth and veterans, but also of fitness level as the U.S. travels all over the West to play three tough games against three strong teams. And several stars are not on the roster, including Naomi Girma, Sophia Wilson, Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanson.

There's no predicting what Hayes, who remains unbeaten in her first 16 matches in charge of the USWNT, will do – she's proven on more than one occasion that she can go any which way with her XI. So what changes could she make from Colombia to Australia? GOAL takes a look.

  • Getty Images Sport

    GK: Jane Campbell

No need to change anything here and, to be fair, Campbell deserves at least one, if not two, more starts this camp. She had so little to do against Colombia, but maybe she'll get a chance to make a few saves against Australia, even if they are without superstar striker Sam Kerr.

Campbell is pushing for a spot as the USWNT's No. 1. The Colombia game didn't give her much to work with when it came to proving her case, which makes this Australia match feel even more important.

  • USA Today Sports

    LB: Crystal Dunn

Jenna Nighswonger started the first game and, to her credit, shined in that left-back role. She got up and down the field, as the USWNT clearly attempted to attack down her side, leading to some good sequences and very nearly a goal.

Because of that performance, Nighswonger could certainly retain her spot in the XI. Hayes, though, could also rotate, giving Crystal Dunn a runout. Dunn could use it.. She's played just 79 minutes since September, so getting some extended game time will likely do wonders for her as she begins life at PSG on the club level.

With that in mind, we'll give her the start in this game, even if it's tough to bench Nighswonger.

  • IMAGN

    CB: Emily Sams

Sams looked solid in her first two caps back in the fall, but watched on from the bench in the Colombia game. She's due another chance, and it'll likely come on Sunday.

Newcomer Tara McKeown put in a good shift after settling into the game on Thursday, and she and Sams are likely now pushing each other for one of those final centerback spots in a full-strength roster. Both need more experience, though, and it's Sams' turn to get some.

  • Getty

    CB: Tierna Davidson

Another change here as Davidson takes the spot of a fellow veteran. Emily Sonnett got the nod last game after being honored for her 100th cap pregame but this should be Davidson's time to shine.

At the moment, Davidson is likely the best partner for the currently-absent Naomi Girma. That duo has proven itself plenty of times, but this is a good chance for Davidson to get some reps alongside someone other than the world-class Chelsea newcomer.

In a bid to ensure that they have enough creativity at their disposal to compete on multiple fronts, the Herons have moved to acquire another playmaking No.10. Rodriguez is that man, with the 21-year-old being snapped up from Argentine giants Racing on loan for the rest of the 2025 campaign. Said deal includes the option for a permanent transfer to be completed later in the year.

DID YOU KNOW?

Rodriguez, who played under Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano when forming part of Argentina’s U23 squad for the pre-Olympic Tournament in 2024, has already won Copa Sudamericana and Recopa Sudamericana titles in his homeland, while also gracing the prestigious Copa Libertadores.

WHAT INTER MIAMI SAID

Inter Miami have said in a statement on the club’s : “Rodriguez, 21, joins Inter Miami from Argentine side Racing Club de Avellaneda, where he developed as a youth player prior to debuting for the first team in 2023. The midfielder subsequently established himself as an important player for Racing, racking up 69 appearances across all competitions while contributing seven goals and four assists.

“Notably, he helped the club win the 2024 Copa Sudamericana title, featuring in eight matches and recording a goal and two assists en route to being crowned champions, and the CONMEBOL Recopa Sudamericana 2025 title. Additionally, during his time with Racing, Rodríguez shared the pitch nine times alongside new Inter Miami teammate Tomas Aviles.

“The Monte Hermoso, Argentina native also boasts international experience in his young career. Rodríguez has represented Argentina at the U-23 level, competing with the team at 2024 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament under the management of Inter Miami head coach Mascherano. Rodriguez made five appearances in the tournament, scoring a goal in the process, as Argentina’s U-23 national team qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Notably, Rodriguez featured alongside new Inter Miami teammates Gonzalo Lujan, Federico Redondo and Rocco Rios Novo in Argentina’s squad for CONMEBOL’s Pre-Olympic Tournament.”

Mumtaz: Shaheen Afridi back to his best in the semi-final

The Pakistan fast bowler took the key wickets of Finn Allen and Kane Williamson in Sydney

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Nov-2022Shaheen Shah Afridi had a slow start to the T20 World Cup in Australia but former Pakistan Women captain Urooj Mumtaz says the fast bowler has been improving throughout and was at his best in the semi-final victory against New Zealand.”By far, I think we probably saw him at his best,” Urooj said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out show. “He has grown into his element throughout the tournament.”Afridi was returning from a serious knee injury at the start of the World Cup and picked up 2 for 24 in the semi-final in Sydney, striking in his first over by trapping New Zealand opener Finn Allen lbw.”He again didn’t get the ball to swing, but the one to Finn Allen just did enough,” Urooj said. “And I think you set the tone when you pick up wickets early up front. He didn’t give a lot of loose balls and it had to be within the stumps and throughout, I think the bowling attack today did that very well,” she said. “Shaheen in the last two overs as well was again very good with the ball towards the end.”After taking 1-11 in his two overs in the powerplay, Afridi returned to bowl the 15th and the 17th, conceding only 13 runs and dismissing the well-set Kane Williamson for 46. Williamson was bowled moving across his stumps and looking to hit behind square on the leg side.”It’s interesting. When he [Williamson] got out, he realised that he should have gone hard at the square boundary and not gone for the one over fine leg,” former Australia allrounder Tom Moody said. “And he just got outfoxed really. It was a good slower ball from Afridi to get a key wicket. Kane is a player, once he’s established like that, he can find boundaries at the back end of the innings quite easily with those pickup shots.”Afridi’s figures of 2 for 24 helped Pakistan restrict New Zealand to 152 for 4 and took his tally of wickets in this T20 World Cup to ten, making him Pakistan’s joint-highest wicket-taker along with legspinner Shadab Khan. Nine of those wickets have come in his last three games, after Afridi went wicketless against India and Zimbabwe, and took only one wicket against the Netherlands.

The next Neto: Wolves have unearthed a new £50m+ star in the making

da realsbet: Wolverhampton Wanderers have sold some key players over the past two summer transfer windows. It has certainly had a knock-on effect for Gary O’Neil’s side, who are struggling this term, albeit while having now won their last two Premier League games.

da betsul: Indeed, whilst they made a healthy profit from those departures, they have no doubt halted the team’s progress under both former managers and current boss O’Neil alike. In 2023, Portuguese midfield duo Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes departed the Old Gold.

In the most recent summer, Max Kilman was one of the detrimental departures, given he was club captain and a key component of their defence.

Former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.

However, perhaps the most impactful sale has been that of Pedro Neto.

Neto’s Wolves career

Despite an injury-riddled time at Molineux, Portuguese winger Neto was superb for the Old Gold. He signed for the club from Italian side Lazio, for a reported fee of £14.1m in August 2019.

Wolves star Pedro Neto

It is fair to say that the tricky winger’s time at the club was a success. He played 135 times for the club, scoring 14 goals and grabbing 24 assists in that time.

His best campaign was in 2023/24, where the Portugal international scored twice and grabbed nine assists in just 20 games.

Sadly, injuries did play a part throughout his time in the Midlands. He had a total of seven injuries across his four years at the club, leading him to miss several lengthy periods of time. That included 297 days and 52 games for club and country with a knee injury.

However, the winger bounced back well from his fitness issues, and his form earned him a £54m move to Stamford Bridge to join Chelsea. He has played 15 times for the Blues so far, scoring three and assisting three in that time.

Neto was certainly a major sale for the Old Gold and is no doubt a player they miss this season. Worryingly, there could be someone else who follows in his footsteps and leaves the club for a large fee.

Wolves’ next big sale

The player in question here is Rayan Ait-Nouri. The 23-year-old wing-back has been superb in a largely poor season for the Old Gold so far, continuing his impressive form from the past few seasons. He cost the club £9.5m from French side Angers in 2021, after spending the previous campaign on loan from the club.

Ait-Nouri

He has been sensational for O’Neil’s side in 2024/25. The Algerian international, who was described as “underrated” by football analyst Ben Mattinson, has played 12 times in the Premier League, scoring three goals and grabbing two assists. That included a goal and assist against Brentford in a losing cause, a game that ended 5-3 to the Bees.

There can be statistical comparisons made between the Wolves defender and some of the most enterprising attacking left-backs in world football. One of those is AC Milan and French defender Theo Hernandez, who has two goals and two assists in ten Serie A games this term.

The pair are both the types of full-backs who often act like wingers, and with their creative flair it might not be surprising to see their passing stats are so similar, as noted on FBref.

This term, Ait-Nouri averages 1.08 key passes and 3.24 progressive passes per game, with the Milan star slightly more, playing 1.62 key passes and 4.73 progressive passes. The Old Gold defender has even more impressive stats when you consider he is playing for a relegation-threatened team.

Defensively, the two left-backs are neck and neck again. The Wolves number three averages 3.24 tackles and interceptions and 4.61 ball recoveries. In comparison, Milan’s French full-back averages 2.43 tackles and interceptions and 4.86 ball recoveries.

It is certainly possible that Ait-Nouri could be the next big Wolves sale. Given he is statistically similar to Hernandez, his valuation could follow the same trend. The Frenchman is worth £50m as per Transfermarkt, and GiveMeSport have previously suggested Wolves would want £60m for their Algerian star.

Wolves player Rayan Ait-Nouri

Losing their number three would be a blow for O’Neil’s side after so many of their other stars have departed over the past two years, and they will no doubt be doing everything they can to hold onto him.

Laura Wolvaardt's unbeaten 90 drives Northern Superchargers to remarkable turnaround victory

Northern Superchargers 164 for 3 (Wolvaardt 90*) beat Manchester Originals 160 for 3 (Dottin 68*, Lee 40) by seven wicketsDeandra Dottin produced some of the finest hitting seen in either edition of the Women’s Hundred but her efforts were trumped by Laura Wolvaardt, whose perfectly judged 90 not out took the Northern Superchargers to a seven-wicket victory with one ball to spare at Clean Slate Headingley.Wolvaardt batted through the Superchargers’ innings and faced 49 balls, hitting 13 fours and two sixes as the Leeds-based side overhauled the visitors’ 160 for three to secure a victory that keeps their chances of making the knockout stages of the competition very much alive. By contrast, the Originals’ hopes of making further progress hang by the slimmest of threads. But such an outcome seemed unlikely when Dottin, who was playing her last game in this year’s Hundred before going back to captain Trinbago Knight Riders in the inaugural women’s Caribbean Premier League, hit five fours and six sixes, including three in a row off Linsey Smith, in her 30-ball 68 not out and shared in the 74-run partnership with Sophie Ecclestone that enabled the Originals to post a formidable score. And the Originals’ innings had begun in sprightly fashion when Lizelle Lee took at least one boundary of each of the first five sets and made 40 of the 57 runs she put on with Emma Lamb when she top-edged an attempted drive off Katie Levick and was caught by the wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy.Lamb soon followed for 14, although it took a brilliant catch running in from long-on by Alice Davidson-Richards off Heather Graham to remove her and that dismissal was in sharp contrast to the departure of Ami Campbell, who was run out for 7 when she was dozily strolling back into her crease and was beaten by Hollie Armitage’s sharp throw and Healy’s quick thinking. The score was 86 off 38 balls when Campbell had to stroll back to the dugout but that was only a prelude to the astonishing hitting of Dottin. At the other end Ecclestone was not quite outshone – she whacked three successive fours off Jenny Gunn – but her unbeaten 24 was overshadowed by her partner’s remarkably clean hitting.Undaunted by their stiff target, the Superchargers began very positively with Healy hitting six fours in an 18-ball 25 before she was caught at mid-off by Lea Tahuhu off Kate Cross. Lamb’s excellent throw then ran out Bess Heath for three but Superchargers’ skipper, Armitage regained the initiative with a 20-ball 24 before being bowled by Lamb.Meanwhile Wolvaardt was coolness personified even when 75 runs were needed off 40 balls and 55 off 25. In company with Graham, she put on an unbroken 55 in 24 balls and the winning runs were scored off Dottin, whose day was spoiled when her last over contained a front-foot no-ball and thereby a free hit.
