A big Eze upgrade: Arsenal open talks to sign £70m "machine" from PL club

da dobrowin: Following a slow start to the transfer window, in which they appeared to be doing very little, Arsenal have burst into life this week.

da dobrowin: Mikel Arteta’s side might still be some way away from signing their marquee striker, but based on reports from the last few days, they appear incredibly close to securing the services of Christian Norgaard and Kepa Arrizabalaga – and the deal for Martin Zubimendi looks as assured as ever.

Interestingly, several links to the incredibly talented Eberechi Eze have also been emerging in recent days, who would be an exceptionally exciting addition to the Gunners’ squad.

Crystal Palace's EberechiEzecelebrates with the trophy after winning the FA Cup

Yet, if more recent stories are to be believed, Andrea Berta and Co may be looking at another English talent, someone who’d be an even better signing than the Crystal Palace star.

Arsenal chase England stars

While there was plenty that went wrong for them this season, Arsenal’s biggest issue was their lack of cutting edge, and at times, creativity.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So, with that clearly in mind, the club have been linked with a host of brilliant attack minded players inrecent weeks, a number of whom also happen to be England internationals, like Anthony Gordon and Eze.

The former reportedly has a price tag of around £80m, and while he didn’t have his best campaign to date this year, he was still reasonablly effective, racking up 16 goal involvements in 42 games – including three against the Gunners.

Anthony Gordon

Eze, on the other hand, has a release clause in his current deal worth around £68m, and would therefore be little easier to bring to the Emirates.

However, as talented and exciting a player the 26-year-old is, it looks like the North Londoners could now be looking at yet another Three Lions star as an alternative, if not an outright upgrade.

At least that’s according to a recent report from the Express, which claims that Arsenal are very much interested in Morgan Rogers.

In fact, the report goes a step further, revealing that after making initial contact over a month ago, the Gunners remain in talks with the 22-year-old’s camp over a potential deal.

However, given his importance to the Claret and Blue, the report claims it will take an offer of around £70m from the North Londoners, if they want to get their man.

It would be a costly and potentially complicated transfer to get over the line then, but given Rogers’ immense ability and potential, it’s one Arsenal shoud be pursuing, especially as he’d be a serious upgrade on Eze.

How Rogers compares to Eze

So, with their price tag being nearly the same, why should Arsenal be looking to sign Rogers over Eze this summer?

Morgan Rogers

Well, the first reason why relates to their output in the Premier League this season, as the Villa dynamo was able to score eight goals and provide 11 assists in 37 appearances, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.94 games.

In contrast, the former QPR gem scored eight goals and provided eight assists in 34 appearances, which comes out as a still good, but less impressive, average of 2.12 goal involvements per game.

The second reason for picking the Halesowen-born gem is that his advantage over the Palace ace extends to their underlying numbers as well.

For example, he performs significantly better in most relevant metrics, such as progressive passes and carries, as well as goal-creating actions, which helps demonstrate his creative potential, whether off the wing or in midfield.

Finally, the former Manchester City prospect is four years younger than the 26-year-old Eagles star and already has experience playing in the Champions League and fighting for places near the top of the Premier League, so the transition to title challenger should be easier for him.

Ultimately, both players would be incredible signings for Arsenal this summer, but thanks to his better output, underlying numbers, experience and the fact he’s far younger, Arsenal should be looking to sign Rogers over Eze.

Better than Sesko & Gyokeres: Arsenal have "looked at" signing £82m star

The incredible goalscorer would be an unreal addition to Arsenal’s squad.

Campanha destaca ‘coragem e pioneirismo’ do Vasco

Harmanpreet Kaur: 'These six months have taught me to approach life day to day'

The India T20I and Supernovas captain looks ahead to the Women’s T20 Challenge

As told to Annesha Ghosh04-Nov-2020Whatever opportunities us Indians are getting to play cricket right now, I want to enjoy them, savour every moment. Being away from cricket for about seven months because of the pandemic made me realise that you have to appreciate every such opportunity that comes your way.As the Supernovas captain, I definitely want to win the Women’s T20 Challenge trophy this year as well. There’s no feeling as good as winning a tournament. Ayabonga Khaka, the quick bowler from South Africa, is a good addition to our squad. Our entire overseas contingent is very good, and so are the uncapped Indians. Ayushi Soni from Delhi seems like a promising youngster. I think we have a squad that can put up a good fight and Supernovas can take their third straight T20 Challenge trophy. This competition comes at a vital time for us. It is important that we keep getting these opportunities to play high-level competitive cricket. So even if we continue to only get to play in countries where Covid-19 is a bit under control, I think it will be great for us. Whether it is for bilateral series or all the big tournaments in 2022, we would be able to plan and prepare ourselves better. The lead-up to the tournament has been unlike any in the past. A long break, and then a quarantine in Mumbai before coming to Dubai, which is where our hotel is, and then quarantining again. While in quarantine in Mumbai, I tried to stick to a routine. Some yoga and stretches in the morning, then I’d watch something after breakfast if I felt like it, and then I’d spend some time at the gym before lunch. I brought some of my fitness equipment from Punjab and rented the rest in Mumbai; I kept it all in my room. We’d have some team meetings over Zoom after that. I had activities to keep myself occupied with, so it wasn’t as though I had to keep staring at the walls all day long! Before that I didn’t have many problems training in Punjab during the lockdown. I have a small gym set-up in a room in my apartment in Patiala, which is where I practise. For the first month after the T20 World Cup in Australia, I didn’t do anything at all, didn’t even touch my bat or the gym stuff. But after I was mentally relaxed, I started missing the feel of holding a bat. Since then, I have kept up with my fitness regime and didn’t take any long breaks, because at the back of my mind I knew that if the two World Cups and the Commonwealth Games go ahead on schedule in 2022, I need to be up for the challenge. And avoiding laziness from setting in, knowing how much time we all had on our hands, is key to that process.

A post shared by Harmanpreet Kaur (@imharmanpreet_kaur) on Sep 15, 2020 at 10:46pm PDT

So when I turned up at the ground in Patiala the first day, I didn’t feel rusty. When in Punjab, I usually train under the state Ranji Trophy coach, Munish Bali. We have a group of about eight players there: among them myself and some four or five men’s players such as Sandeep Sharma and Mayank Markande, who are regulars on the Ranji circuit. There are a few male Under-19 Punjab players, too. During the initial part of the lockdown, we all stayed away from practice, but before some of the local boys who were headed to the IPL flew out to the UAE around mid-August, I was lucky to get a few net sessions with them.Earlier, the pause in all cricket in early March came at a significant time. On March 8 we lost the World Cup to Australia. It was a difficult day for us. Having played good cricket throughout the tournament, deep down we felt we deserved to win the title. But in the final, nothing went our way, nothing we tried went in our favour. And there’s the other thing: putting up a good fight and losing, you tell yourself, “We did our best.” But we actually didn’t show any fight in that match. At the end of the day you have to appreciate the team that plays better cricket, and Australia were certainly that team. No doubt, they were very good on that day and they deserved the trophy. The good thing is that with no cricket for several months after the final, I think it helped us process the defeat. It calmed the mind a little. At least that’s how it was for me personally. That break helped me analyse a number of things: areas we can look to improve going forward as a team, things I can personally do better. So being away from cricket brought in a lot of perspective. It gave me the opportunity to approach cricket, think about it, and treat it slightly differently. Those six months after March played a very important role in my life.In cricket we hear a lot that one needs to stay in the present, enjoy everything. But I have often found it difficult to follow this advice and I have struggled to apply it in practice. But these six months actually taught me to approach life on a day-to-day basis. I started to give myself 10-20 minutes to think about what I intended to achieve the following day. It could be a small thing on the personal front, but the thought that had to be put into the planning, especially for someone like me who loves to have a sense of planning in most things I do, it was a good reinforcement.

Karnataka, and the art of finding a way to win

It’s been a season with challenges, but the Karnataka side have reached the Ranji knockouts as strong favourites nonetheless

Shashank Kishore in Jammu19-Feb-2020One of the byproducts of dominating the domestic circuit is often not having the best players available for you at important times because they’re either with India or India A. For Karnataka, having the cream of their batting away – KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Manish Pandey – at different times during this Ranji Trophy season opened up windows of opportunity for the others. What has worked for Karnataka is that they have had the likes of R Samarth and Karun Nair overcoming slumps to stand up when the “big stars” have been away. These are characteristics of champion teams, finding ways tide over the absences of key players. And now with Manish Pandey back in the line-up, Karnataka’s batting, which seemed shaky until not long ago, receives a massive lift.”It’s a big boost,” Nair, the captain, said ahead of the quarter-finals. “He has so many thoughts and ideas, just the way he is, he is a very positive person. It’s really nice to have him back.” Pandey’s injection gives some leeway to a middle order still regaining its lost touch.Samarth, for example, was left out of the side after scores of 11, 4 and 0 in his first two games, which came on the back of a poor season last year. His T20 and one-day performances too had been poor. From being an India A regular, Samarth found himself unable to even get a berth in the state side. Fortunately for him, the Indian team put through a request to rest Mayank Agarwal for the clash against Mumbai, ahead of India A’s departure to New Zealand.Samarth, who had left the camp, rejoined the team in Mumbai and turned his season around with a match-winning 86. That win gave Karnataka momentum. And since that 86, he’s racked up scores of 34, 63, 74, 108 in four of his eight knocks, some of which Nair described as “tough runs that help the team.”The century against Madhya Pradesh came on a green top in Shimoga, one that pleased Samarth like no other. “I would rate that innings very highly,” Samarth aid. “The wicket was doing a lot and I had to grind my teeth off. On such wickets, it was important to keep your mind fresh and be present in that moment. It was important to not focus on the previous ball.”Nair himself went through a lean run after a promising start to the domestic season that included a century and a 92 in the season-opening Duleep Trophy. Often, he’d get pretty 20s and then get out. Until it got to a point when external noises about his batting began to irk a normally shy and poker-faced Nair.K Gowtham played a fine hand with the bat•PTI Prior to the final league game against Baroda, he’d made 220 runs in nine innings. On the third morning, with Karnataka looking to set up a first-innings advantage, Nair had a chat with Rahul Dravid before play began. The former India captain spoke to him about his shuffle and trigger movement. And while one chat is unlikely to have changed much technically, in the mind, Nair appeared calmer and responded with two solid outings in a match-winning cause. The form has returned now, as has his confidence. Then there’s young Devdutt Padikkal, the top run-getter in the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophies. He started the season well and has six half-centuries, but hasn’t been able to convert his starts into three figures. As for Shreyas Gopal, he hasn’t quite been the utility player that he was in past seasons. Previously, he had often been the batting crisis man if the top order failed. This season, he’s neither managed runs nor the wickets he usually picks up by a handful. And while question marks have been raised over his place, the selectors have backed him despite having just 224 runs in 12 innings, along with eight wickets in seven matches. This is another chance to vindicate that call.If despite all this, Karnataka, who don’t have a single batsman with 600-plus runs or a bowler with 35-plus wickets going into the knockouts, it’s because the runs and wickets have been distributed.Abhimanyu Mithun has shouldered a bulk of the responsibility, picking 27 wickets while Ronit More has 20 scalps. In earlier seasons, the pace duo of R Vinay Kumar and Mithun have had a solid support cast. This season, Karnataka have struggled to nail down a third pace option consistently. Left-arm seamer Prateek Jain has been steady without being spectacular, while V Koushik has not quite built on a promising start. But that was with Prasidh Krishna absent through injury. Prasidh returned for the match against Baroda, and brought in added incisiveness with his pace. Prasidh is tall, hits the deck hard, and is the only bowler capable of bowling in excess of 140 clicks in this line-up.Yet for all their struggles at different times, Karnataka have found ways to get past the line. Somehow, all their form issues have ironed themselves out as the season has stretched. And now, Karnataka need one final push to make for an unprecedented domestic treble after bossing their way to the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy championship wins.

Mumbai Indians run into Avesh Khan 2.0

He’s bounced out Rohit Sharma, he’s yorked Hardik Pandya, and his numbers suggest he’s an utterly transformed bowler

Manjrekar: Avesh Khan is confident, and he has the range as a bowler

It’s a lot of fun being Avesh Khan. Now.He is barely into his first over and he has Rohit Sharma hopping about. He’s making one of India’s very best look out of place, but there’s nothing out-of-the-box about how he’s doing it. Avesh has always been a hit-the-deck fast bowler. It’s just that now he’s learned to put the ball exactly where he wants to.Watch the IPL on ESPN+

Match highlights of Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals are available here in English, and here in Hindi (US only).

Kids who become superstars at Under-19 level produce a lot of excitement in India. Call it the Virat Kohli syndrome.Avesh once belonged in this bracket. At the 2016 Youth World Cup, when India went all the way to the final, he was their highest wicket-taker. But while his peers from that tournament have gone on to bigger things – Rashid Khan is probably the world’s greatest T20 bowler now, Shadab Khan is Pakistan’s No. 1 limited-overs spinner, Shimron Hetmyer and Alzarri Joseph are West Indies regulars, and even Sandeep Lamichhane travels the world playing franchise cricket – Avesh has been stuck. He couldn’t even break into an IPL team. Avesh made his debut back in 2017. But until 2021 he had played only nine games in four years.Imagine that. This is a new-ball/death bowler. A resource every team needs. And he clocks 140 kph and more. An asset in any form of the game. Plus, he’s Indian, which means not only does he cover a specialist position for you, he also frees you up in your search for overseas picks. While most other franchises scour the globe for a quality quick, you could go and get a six-hitter or an allrounder. There’s a lot of one and not a lot of the other. But Avesh – the old Avesh – wasn’t all that good. He gave away a boundary every four balls and he took 36 (roughly) to pick up a wicket.Avesh Khan has become a completely different bowler this season•ESPNcricinfo LtdCut to 2021 though, and Avesh is a bowler transformed. Now, it takes about seven balls for him to concede a boundary and only 13 to pick up a wicket.”I don’t know if he can go any better than this,” Anrich Nortje said midway through the Delhi Capitals’ game against the Mumbai Indians on Saturday. And here’s why.Avesh is in his last over, the 19th of the innings, and he completely nails Hardik Pandya. This is a yorker. Not just any yorker. It’s an inswinging yorker. And it’s a corker. At 141kph. Hardik is, at first, set up to helicopter the ball away. But it starts moving in the air. Moving scarily. Hardik is not in the right position. He’s falling over and the ball keeps surging in. It slips through the gap between his feet – his feet! – and knocks back leg stump. The old Avesh could produce such moments. But he wouldn’t have finished a T20 game with an economy rate of 3.75. Top-class fast bowlers make it seem like they can do everything. Strike first, strike late, keep the runs down, make batters wet their pants. Avesh is finally starting to look like he can tick all those boxes.

Stubbs channels his nerves to continue breakout run

South Africa were being turned inside out by India’s spinners but they found a way through to level the series

Ashish Pant10-Nov-2024Tristan Stubbs admitted that he was “proper nervous” and just tried to control his breathing as he struck an unbeaten 47 off 41 balls to shepherd a tricky chase and take South Africa over the line by three wickets in the second T20I against India.”I was just trying to breathe,” he said with a smile after the game. “It’s my favourite place to play cricket and I was nervous, proper nervous, so I was just trying to control my breathing.”Stubbs grew up in Knysna, a small town about 260 kilometres up the road from Gqeberha and has played all his domestic and franchise cricket at St George’s Park. This knock was even more special for Stubbs as it was his mum’s birthday and he had plenty of his family and friends in the crowd who had driven down to the ground to celebrate.”Normally there’s a whole bunch of them [his friends and family], probably I reckon 30 to 35 of them,” Stubbs said. “They come through normally once a year for the SA20 and they’ve made a trip now. It’s my mom’s birthday too, so it’s sort of a celebration.”Before I met the team I went and said hello to everyone at the house that they’re staying at. So yeah, it’s been a really good day.”Coming into bat at 33 for 2 in the sixth over with South Africa chasing 125, Stubbs saw his side slip to 66 for 6 in the 13th. That soon became 86 for 7 in the 16th, but he got vital support from Gerald Coetzee with whom he shared an unbroken 42-run stand for the eighth wicket off just 20 balls.”Fortunately, the run rate never got away from us,” Stubbs said about the chase. “Once we lost the wickets, I had 30 in mind off the last three and then G [Coetzee] really came and played an innings to help that out and then, fortunately, we got over the line.”He walked in and he said straight away we can win this. I believed it all the time. We were always two hits away from being back to run-a-ball and then we had the crowd behind, which was just amazing.”Stubbs was caught right in the midst of an intense Varun Chakravarthy spell, who ran through South Africa’s middle order with a career-best 5 for 17. Ravi Bishnoi also kept things tight at the other end, but Stubbs bided his time before taking on the fast bowlers at the death. He later admitted the South Africa batters were out-skilled by the two spinners on a surface that was “typically staying low” but was pleased to stay till the end to take his side home.’They got the better of us in the middle there by just outskilling us,’ Stubbs said of India’s spinners•AFP/Getty Images

“They both [Chakravarthy and Bishnoi] were doing just enough to beat you on either side,” he said. “It wasn’t easy to come in and just rotate even, let alone take them on. They are two of the best spinners in the world so when they are on, it’s really tough and they got the better of us in the middle there by just outskilling us.”So yeah, it was really nice to get the team over the line and be there not out at the end. I think as someone who bats in the middle, that’s your whole goal when chasing, get the team over the line but do it by being not out at the end.”It’s been quite the breakthrough year for Stubbs. In February, he became just the 11th batter to score a first-class triple-century in South Africa while in the last month and a bit, he’s racked up his Test and ODI centuries. Stubbs also played a key role in Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s second-successive SA20 title while he finished the IPL 2024 as Delhi Capitals’ second-highest run-getter with a terrific strike rate of 190.90.What’s brought about this maturity in Stubbs’ game?”I don’t actually know how to answer that. It’s just been nice,” he said. “I really enjoy the longer format because you can spend more time in the middle without feeling like you need to play a big ball and I really enjoy the graft of batting long.”I think the longer form cricket just naturally helps your T20 game and the batsmanship and spending time in the middle and not having to make a play really helps the rest of the formats. So I think that’s been the biggest thing.”

Man Utd told to forget about Benjamin Sesko and 'break the break' for Brighton star instead

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has offered the Red Devils some transfer advice and has one key target in mind.

Man Utd linked with more signingsTipped to bring in a striker or midfielderFerdinand reveals his top choice for the Red DevilsFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester United have brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon in the summer transfer window but continue to be linked with other targets. Amorim's side are one of several clubs believed to be interested in Benjamin Sesko, while Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Financial issues means that the Red Devils may not go for a striker this summer and could rely instead on Rasmus Hojlund to lead the lead. Ferdinand feels that if his former club can only sign one more player this summer, then they should go all out for 21-year-old Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.

WHAT FERDINAND SAID

He said on his YouTube channel: "I think you've got to look at the here and now at the moment with Man United. That's what I said about a No 9. I'm not really doubting [Sesko] as a player. I'm saying Man United need experience at the top of the pitch. They've got Hojlund, they've got Zirkzee, they've got Chido. Young, inexperienced players. They need someone to look at and go, "That's how you play as a No 9. That's how you do it. When you're going to buy somebody who hasn't got as much experience as I'd like, I think that's another risk. Is it worth taking with inexperienced players at this level?"

"If I don't get a striker, I'd go midfield. There's only one name I'm thinking about, I've got to be honest, who I think fits the bill for what we need. An Amorim-type player as well. Physically great, can drive with the ball, can take it in all areas, very good tactically, great energy, great legs, Premier League experience, centre midfield. (Carlos) Baleba. That's who I go and get. That's my man. That's the one I go and get. I go and break the bank.

"So if I got the money for the four players that are surplus to requirements now, would I get a No 9 or would I get Baleba? Would I get a No 9 I'm not sure about, who's a bit young, inexperienced, or would I get Baleba with Premier League experience and know what he can do here? I'm going Baleba, sorry. I'm going to go with Baleba. I think he'll have a huge impact on this squad, on this team. You free up a few people in that midfield area as well to have a little less responsibility defensively because I think he's all-action. He can do it all."

Getty Images SportWHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

Manchester United fans will have to wait and see if any more players arrive at Old Trafford in time for the new campaign. In the meantime, the Red Devils are currently in the United States and preparing for a friendly clash against West Ham.

Essex eased to a five-wicket win over Sussex Sharks at Hove to claim their third win in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.The early damage was done by Jamie Porter who picked up four wickets with the new ball as Sussex collapsed to 50 for 6. Skipper John Simpson led a lower-order recovery with 69, but 226 for 9 never looked enough despite a slow pitch at the 1st Central County Ground being used for the third successive game. After opener Robin Das wafted at a wide one from left-armer Jack Campbell, Luc Benkenstein and skipper Tom Westley broke the back of the chase with 94 for the second wicket at a run a ball before Benkenstein (49), who had struck two sixes off leg-spinner Archie Lenham in the previous over, was run out by Tom Haines’ direct hit.But by then Westley was well into his stride. He reached his third fifty in this season’s competition with a six off Lenham and had made serene progress to 76 with 12 fours when he was beaten by Zach Lion-Cachet’s brilliant pick-up and direct hit from the leg-side boundary coming back for a second run.Essex only needed 63 from 21 overs at that stage, and although leg-spinners Bertie Foreman and Archie Lenham took further wickets, Nick Browne and Ben Allison saw them over the line with 28 balls to spare.A seventh defeat left Sussex bottom of Group B for the second season running. They have won just twice in the competition since reaching the semi-finals in 2022.Sussex won the toss, but after openers Tom Clark and Haines put on 25 with few alarms, they lost four wickets in 16 balls.Allison made the breakthrough when Clark spliced a pull to mid-on then Porter ripped through the Sussex top order. Haines square drove to backward point, Charlie Tear was beaten by one which straightened just enough in the same over and Oli Carter had two stumps flattened by an inswinger.Lion-Cachet’s limp pull to midwicket gave Porter his fourth victim and when Henry Rogers played round a straight one from the impressive Jamal Richards the innings was in tatters.Simpson, though, determinedly put conditions into perspective and he got good support from the lower order. He added 27 with Lenham for the seventh wicket before Lenham padded up to Westley and then found another reliable partner in 20-year-old left-hander Foreman, who has been one of Sussex’s best performers in a disappointing campaign. They put on 54 for the eighth wicket with Simpson making his tenth List A fifty. He progressed to 69 with ten fours before driving loosely to cover. Foreman spliced a pull in the penultimate over with a maiden List A half-century in his sights after adding 66 for the ninth wicket with No10 Henry Crocombe, whose unbeaten 43 at least gave Sussex something to defend, the last three wickets having put on 138.
