Royals’ director of cricket looks forward to “grooming” Parag to become “an early-middle-order player rather than just a death hitter”
Sidharth Monga30-May-20222:29
Sangakkara – ‘Need to groom Riyan Parag into an early middle-order player’
One of the hallmarks of Rajasthan Royals’ season – apart from both the orange and purple caps going to their players – will be how cleverly they made do with a thin batting line-up, which had R Ashwin bat at No. 7. They used him as a pinch hitter and as a pinch anchor too, and even retired him out once to maximise the death overs once his job was done.In the coming season, though, their director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara will want more from the specialist batters other than Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson, especially the young Riyan Parag. He said after the final on Sunday that he would actively work towards it.Related

Sanga on Buttler: 'I can't remember anyone batting this well in the IPL'
“I think we have got a lot of improvement to do in all areas really,” Sangakkara said at the post-match press conference. “If you really take our batting, we had huge contributions from Jos, contributions from Sanju, and Shimron Hetmyer in the early stages. Riyan and Devdutt [Padikkal] played well in patches, but in terms of overall performance, we need a little bit from the support-role players.”I think Riyan Parag has got a huge amount of potential, and I think we have got to work him into a higher batting number by the time we come in next season. I look forward to grooming him to become more of a kind of an early-middle-order player rather than just a death hitter because I think he is so accomplished against spin as well as pace.”I think overall we have the purple cap, the orange cap, and as a team, we played extremely well. And I thought from the time we started the tournament to now, the guys have put in an amazing effort, so I am very, very proud.”Parag ended up facing just 132 balls in 14 innings this IPL. His longest innings was his 31-ball unbeaten 56 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Pune. During the season, they tried to shore up the batting by playing Daryl Mitchell and James Neesham, but that upset their bowling balance. Eventually, they went with their five best bowlers, leaving the batters to adjust. That perhaps left Buttler with the extra responsibility to bat through, which in turn left the extra onus on Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal to bat quickly so that Buttler’s slower starts could be accommodated.Asked about his own year, Samson told Star Sports at the post-match presentation: “The role was completely different this year with Jos playing 20 overs. All batters had a different mindset to play around him, play different situations, different strike rates, and take on the bowlers. Some nice 30s, 40s, 20s, but [there’s a] lot to learn more.”R Ashwin was used a pinch hitter and a pinch anchor for Royals to shore up their batting•BCCI
Buttler, though, refused to put his slower starts down to the thin batting. Asked if he was left with the dual role of batting long and batting quick, Buttler told Star Sports: “Not at all. In good teams, you have a lot of trust in everyone. I have huge trust in everyone else. We played fantastic all season and came short today. I react to my own game. If the game asks me to be aggressive or hang in, I trust myself to make the right decision.”That said, Jaiswal and Samson had made up for it with their quick starts to have Royals at 59 for 1 in eight overs in the final, which Sangakkara thought was a good base once they had made the surprising decision to bat upon winning only their fourth toss of the season.”We were debating whether to put them in first as well,” Sangakkara said. “By the time we arrived at the ground, we looked at the pitch, it was pretty dry. And we thought it will get slower and maybe offer a little bit of turn for our spinners. So we expected to get about 160-165. We were really well-set in our batting innings: 70 for 1 at halfway mark. Then Sanju got out and then Hardik [Pandya] came on and bowled some beautiful overs and we let Gujarat back into the game.”With 130, you need a bit of luck and some quick wickets in the powerplay. Yes, we did get two; unfortunately, we didn’t get [Shubman] Gill in that first over and the [asking] run rate never went over seven. So it was always going to be tough.”Sangakkara was full of praise for his bowlers, but expected Ashwin to push himself more come next season. “Ash has done a great job for us,” Sangakkara said. “Even for Ash, being a legend in terms of what he has achieved on the cricketing pitch, there will be a lot of improvements and thinking to do, especially with his offspinner and bowl more of it.”
Shahbaz Nadeem scored 177 before also striking with the ball, as Nagaland ended day three 750 runs behind

Rahul Shukla congratulates Shahbaz Nadeem after the latter brought up his century•PTI
After two days of resolute batting, Jharkhand continued to pile the misery on a hapless Nagaland attack, finally folding for a massive 880 on the third day in Kolkata. Shahbaz Nadeem, who was on 123 overnight, finished on 177, while No. 11 Rahul Shukla remained unbeaten on 85, as the final-wicket stand yielded 191.While it was almost surprising to see Jharkhand continue to bat after they had ended day two at 769, Nadeem and Shukla’s intentions of getting quick runs was clear after a quiet first six overs of the day. Nadeem cracked three consecutive fours off Chopise Hopongkyu, and Shukla wasn’t to be left behind either. He quickly found boundaries off Raja Swarnkar before launching Shirkant Mundhe for six to get to his second first-class fifty. The partnership was past hundred by that time, and the pair resumed their attack after the drinks break, with Shukla smashing another four sixes – he hit six in total – as Nagaland ended up bowling more than 200 overs.Their reply with the bat wasn’t convincing either. Ashish Kumar cleaned up opener Sedezhalie Rupero for 8 in the fifth over of Nagaland’s innings before Shukla joined the action on the field by running Rupero’s partner Yugandhar Singh out for 9. Anukul Roy soon after had the captain Rongsen Jonathan caught for another single-digit score, as Nagaland stood at 43 for 3 at one stage. There was a brief fight with a 56-run fourth-wicket partnership between Mundhe and Chetan Bist, but Nadeem hit back with the ball after earlier frustrating Nagaland with the bat. He had Mundhe caught for 39, as the next man in Hokaito Zhimomi was forced to retire hurt on 5 for what seemed like a hand injury, meaning Nagaland were effectively five down. They ended the day a massive 750 runs behind, and with two full days of the game remaining, stare at a huge defeat unless something miraculous happens to rescue them.

TOMBENSE

da bwin: Tottenham Hotspur have recruited very well over the last couple seasons, giving current boss Ange Postecoglou all of the tools to try and secure Champions League football in North London.
da cassino online: The Aussie registered a fifth-placed finish during his debut campaign in the Premier League, narrowly missing out on a top four spot and subsequently having to settle for a Europa League place instead.
It was undoubtedly a disappointment to miss out after such a promising first year at the helm for the 59-year-old, but it’s given him that foundation to build on for the current campaign.
However, the signings of Dominic Solanke, Lucas Bergvall and Timo Werner have allowed for Spurs to make a 100% start to their European campaign – highlighting the hierarchy’s excellent recruitment in recent times.
It’s certainly a stark contrast from a couple of years ago, with the club investing their funds erratically and failing to get their money’s worth – resulting in a huge financial drain.
Spurs’ transfers during the 2019/20 season
After four successive top-four finishes in the Premier League, there was always a question as to whether Spurs could invest and reach the next level, particularly after their Champions League final defeat in 2019.
Those questions were duly answered with owner Daniel Levy splashing over £100m on new additions during the 2019/20 season to try and take his side to a title battle.
However, big-money transfers such as Ryan Sessegnon, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele, unfortunately, didn’t work out, with the latter costing a then club-record of £63m before departing on a free transfer just a couple of years later.
The Frenchman made just 91 appearances between 2019 and last summer when he departed and joined Ligue 1 side OGC Nice in his homeland as he attempted to rebuild his career.
He wasn’t the only player who arrived in North London with a lot of promise, as Levy forked out another hefty sum on a player – keeping one eye on the youngster for the future.
The player who Levy sold too soon
Winger Jack Clarke arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in an £8.5m deal that summer before rejoining Championship side Leeds United on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Former Leeds winger Jack Clarke.
The youngster caught the eye with his direct dribbling skills and ability to beat a man – looking as though the club had managed to grab themselves a bargain, with Clarke having the potential to develop in North London.
However, it would be a move to forget for the attacker, who only made four first-team appearances during his two years as a senior member – subsequently having various loans away from Spurs before departing permanently.
He would join Sunderland for just £750k before add-ons, with the move allowing him to gain valuable first-team minutes, scoring 27 times in 94 appearances for the Black Cats, helping them close in on a return to the Premier League after flirting with the play-offs.
Clarke’s subsequent form in England’s second tier saw newly promoted Ipswich Town make a move for him, finally allowing him to be a top-flight player, drawing some comparisons to some elite talents in the process.
The 23-year-old was compared to Manchester City’s £100m signing Jack Grealish by former Arsenal ace Alan Smith during a recent meeting with Aston Villa and when delving into their respective stats from the current campaign, it’s not a far-fetched comparison at all.
The Tractor Boys winger has registered the same number of combined goals and assists as the City attacker, but is averaging the same number of shots per 90 so far this campaign.

The £750k fee received for the youngster was far too cheap, but they did receive a sell-on fee upon his move to Ipswich this summer.
However, many people around North London will be wishing that they had kept him given his excellent form and comparisons of late – potentially being a better option than the likes of Werner in Postecoglou’s current side.

Warwickshire confirm that security measures will be stepped up for Saturday’s T20I

The thrilling action on day four at Edgbaston was undermined by racist abuse from some sections of the crowd•Getty Images
Saturday’s T20I between England and India at Edgbaston will be monitored by “undercover football crowd-style spotters”, after Warwickshire unveiled a series of new measures to combat the instances of racist abuse that marred last week’s delayed fifth Test between the same teams.England won the Test and squared the series in thrilling style, chasing down 378 before lunch on the final day, of which 259 were scored on the fourth afternoon and evening. However, that passage of play was marred by reports of racial insults from a section of the crowd, which were initially highlighted on Twitter by Azeem Rafiq, the former Yorkshire cricketer, and subsequently led to a criminal investigation by West Midlands Police.”Nearly 100,000 people watched one of the most exciting Test matches in recent history earlier this week,” Stuart Cain, Warwickshire’s chief executive, said. “But we cannot hide from the mindless racist abuse experienced by some fans following India in the Eric Hollies Stand.”These unacceptable actions by a small number of people have over-shadowed a superb sporting contest, and those responsible do not deserve to be part of the cricket family. We need to work harder as people, as well as a venue, to take responsibility for ensuring that everyone feels safe and welcome when watching the game.”With an exceedingly busy month looming for Edgbaston – including this week’s T20I against India, next week’s Vitality Blast Finals Day, and culminating in the ground’s staging of the women’s T20 competition at the Commonwealth Games – the club acknowledged in a statement that its “zero-tolerance” approach to stewarding “in isolated areas… hadn’t been delivered”. Edgbaston’s security partner, G4S, is investigating why Monday’s incidents were not more swiftly resolved.
For Saturday’s T20I, Warwickshire confirmed that undercover football crowd-style spotters would be deployed throughout Edgbaston to listen out for abusive behaviour and report it for immediate action, and added that there would be an increased police presence at games to handle such incidents swiftly, and enable more chance of successful prosecutions. The club said that all fans at subsequent matches would be encouraged to report abuse discreetly via the Edgbaston app, adding that anyone found guilty of hate crime will be banned not only from Edgbaston but from all venues under the ECB’s jurisdiction.”I was angry that a minority of people thought it acceptable to racially abuse a group of fans who were following India and bringing great entertainment to the Hollies,” Cain said.”Those involved had already enjoyed three brilliant days, mixing with England’s Barmy Army and creating a welcome atmosphere with their singing and Dhol drums. But on day four they experienced some abuse after tea, and there is no excuse for that.”This has given the Club renewed energy and motivation to work even harder to make sure Edgbaston is a place for everyone – regardless of race, sex, gender, ability or background. A few mindless idiots must not distract us. We are determined that any unacceptable behaviour will have a very public consequence.”Meanwhile, I want to apologise directly to any fans who were subjected to racist abuse. Everyone at Edgbaston will work hard to do better, and they are welcome back with open arms in the future.”

Sinto que o clube me abraça e me apoia.

da apostebet: Liverpool have been offered the chance to seal a “sensational” swap deal involving a current Reds player and a “complete” midfielder, according to a new transfer claim.
Latest Liverpool news
da bet7: On Monday, finally some positive contract news emerged, with Fabizio Romano reporting that it is a “matter of time” until Ibrahima Konate signs a new deal at Anfield. While the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are even more important to tie down, the Frenchman is an influential performer in his own right.
In terms of transfer rumours doing the rounds, Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo continues to be linked with a move to Anfield, with a new report claiming that scouts have been sent to watch him in action, viewing him as a long-term replacement for Salah out on the right wing.
The Cameroonian is far from the only option being considered as a possible successor to the legendary Reds forward, with Bournemouth wide man Antoine Semenyo believed to have caught the eye of the Premier League leaders.
One Liverpool player who has been short of form and arguably looked past his best this season is Andy Robertson, and at 30, a long-term replacement will need to be found in the near future. Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri has emerged as a standout target, with Merseysiders even potentially able to sign him on the cheap.
Liverpool offered "sensational" swap deal opportunity
According to MilanLive [via Sport Witness], Liverpool have been handed the chance to sign AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders in a swap deal involving Federico Chiesa, likely with some cash going Milan’s way.
Described as a “sensational” opportunity, the Dutchman could join the Reds in the January transfer window, with Arne Slot potentially wanting to add depth in the middle of the park as this report claims those at Anfield are now considering whether to go through with such a “crazy” deal.
AC Milan midfielderTijjaniReijnders.
In some ways, it would be a huge surprise if Chiesa was sold midway through his first season at Liverpool, but the injury concerns that surrounded him when he arrived from Juventus have come to fruition, with the Italian sidelined currently and yet to start in the league in 2024/25.
The 27-year-old does still feel more likely to stay until at least the summer, but in Reijnders, the Reds would be signing an excellent midfielder who could add technical quality and defensive nous to Slot’s squad. The Milan man started all six matches for the Netherlands at Euro 2024, enjoying a 93.5% pass completion rate and helping his country reach the semi-finals, while Ronald Koeman has called him a “super complete midfielder with acceleration”.
At 26, Reijnders is both very experienced and still young enough to be a force in Liverpool’s midfield for plenty of years, and he could be viewed as a great alternative to Real Sociedad ace Martin Zubimendi.
Fabrizio Romano: £36m Liverpool star on the brink of signing new contract
Fabrizio Romano has dropped a big update from Anfield this week.
ByHenry Jackson Nov 4, 2024
That being said, Chiesa needs to be trusted for now, and selling him would weaken the Reds’ attacking options, so the swap deal would come as a shock if it happened.
