8/10 Rangers star has given Clement perfect excuse to release Lundstram

da aviator aposta: Glasgow Rangers played their last game at Ibrox for the 2023/24 campaign and ran out emphatic 5-2 winners on Tuesday night against Dundee in the Scottish Premiership.

da casino: It was not an entirely comfortable evening for the Gers, however, as they found themselves 2-0 down to the away side within the first 40 minutes.

Ross McCausland scored, prodding the ball into the back of the net after a defensive mistake, just before the break to send the Light Blues in with a chance of recovering the situation in the second 45.

Rangers forward Ross McCausland.

A header from Cyriel Dessers, a stunning finish into the top corner from a direct Todd Cantwell cross, and two goals from Scott Wright late in the game ensured that the hosts came away with all three points on the night.

Philippe Clement was without a staggering 11 players for the match; including John Souttar, Abdallah Sima, Bailey Rice, Rabbi Matondo, Leon Balogun, John Lundstram, Connor Goldson, Dujon Sterling, Danilo, Oscar Cortes, and Tom Lawrence.

The remaining players stepped up to the plate, though, and one player has just proven that the club can now live without keeping Lundstram.

The latest on John Lundstram's future

The English maestro is out of contract at the end of May and is currently poised to walk out of Ibrox on a free transfer ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

It had been claimed that the club were locked in talks with the former Sheffield United star to extend his stay in Glasgow, but he has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal at this moment in time.

There is now interest from elsewhere that could see him decide to take the plunge and depart the Scottish giants for nothing this summer, to go and explore other opportunities elsewhere.

Jack Butland

It was recently reported by the print edition Scottish Daily Mail, via Ibrox News, that Turkish side Trabzonspor are interested in a deal to sign the central midfielder at the end of the season to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

The Scottish Sun have also reported that newly-promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town are also eyeing up a late swoop to land the Englishman on a free transfer from Rangers.

That report revealed that Lundstram, who was sent off against Celtic last weekend, has been in talks with Trabzonspor over a move to the Super Lig for the 2024/25 campaign, with the Tractor Boys seemingly hoping to provide competition for his signature.

Instead of battling to keep hold of the midfielder, Clement and Rangers must axe him for good by allowing his contract to run down this summer. This would free up a space in midfield for Nicolas Raskin to emerge as a key player for the club moving forward.

The Belgian talent is a promising young dynamo who caught the eye with an impressive display alongside Mohammed Diomande in Lundstram's position against Dundee on Tuesday night.

Nicolas Raskin's performance against Dundee in numbers

A red card for the English dud against Celtic, for a poor challenge on Alistair Johnston in the first half, meant that there was a space to be filled in the middle of the park next to Diomande as part of the double pivot.

Raskin has endured a difficult season as he has battled two injuries, one that kept him out for seven matches and another that left him on the sidelines for 15 games, and this has disrupted his progress at Ibrox.

When fit, however, the 23-year-old whiz is an excellent talent and proved that with his impressive display against Dundee in Glasgow on Tuesday night.

As you can see in the table above, Raskin was the standout in the middle of the park for the Scottish giants as he had far more touches of the ball, competed in and won more duels, and won more tackles than his midfield partner.

The former Standard Liege star was awarded a player rating of 8/10 for his performance by Glasgow World writer Lewis Anderson, who cited his 'tenacious' play out of possession and his ability to spark attacks on the ball.

Raskin set the tempo for Rangers with his progressive passing from deep, often looking to find Dessers between the lines to start attacks, rather than playing the safe and simple passes that do not amount to anything.

He also won three of his four duels on the ground and this shows that the Belgian star has the physical attributes and positioning to dominate opposition players in 50/50 contests.

Why Clement must now axe Lundstram for good

The Belgian boss can axe Lundstram for good now as Raskin's exceptional performance this week has given him the perfect excuse to tell the club that they can afford to let the midfielder move on this summer.

He can be instantly replaced by handing the former Pro League starlet a leading role in midfield from next season onwards, as the talented gem has the potential to be an upgrade for the Scottish giants.

As you can see in the table above, Raskin has outperformed Lundstram with his work out of possession throughout the 2023/24 Premiership season this term.

The young ace has won a higher percentage of his duels on the deck and in the air, has been dribbled past less often, and won more tackles per game.

Rangers midfielder John Lundstram.

This means that opposition players find far less joy when they play against the Belgian star than they do against Lundstram in the Premiership, which suggests that Rangers could further improve their defensive work if they ditch the Englishman and make Raskin a key player.

The former Liege whiz, however, would need to work on his creative quality as his 0.8 key passes per game is inferior to the out-of-contract star's 1.5 per game.

Cantwell and 8/10 Rangers star have just made themselves undroppable

The Light Blues forward enjoyed a fantastic evening against Dundee on Tuesday night.

ByDan Emery May 15, 2024

He has plenty of time, though, at the age of 23, to improve and develop in that respect. The talented maestro is seven years younger than Lundstram and time is on his side to grow over the coming years.

Raskin is already an upgrade on the Englishman with his work off the ball and his excellent performance on Tuesday has now given the manager the perfect excuse to axe Lundstram for good this summer.

Prithvi Shaw, bowlers make it two wins in two for Delhi Capitals

Chennai Super Kings fell behind early in their chase and were never in the hunt

Karthik Krishnaswamy25-Sep-20205:33

Bishop: Player’s rustiness is starting to have an impact on CSK

Three nights ago, they had settled for protecting their net run rate after falling too far behind the asking rate in a chase of 217 against the Rajasthan Royals. Today the Chennai Super Kings were never in the reckoning in a chase of 176.They were up against the Delhi Capitals, who possess one of the better bowling attacks in the competition, but hobbling to 47 for 3 at the 10-over mark said far more about the inadequacies in the Super Kings’ batting. Ambati Rayudu, their match-winner in their season-opener against the Mumbai Indians, was out with a hamstring injury, but it will still concern the Super Kings that they weren’t able to put together a line-up that could chase a target that, while testing, needed them to score less than nine an over.Axar Patel bowled tight lines in a rare spell – for this season at least – of spin with the new ball, and took out the Super Kings’ one real source of top-order muscle, Shane Watson. Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje also proved difficult to get away, finding a bit of early movement before shifting to the hard lengths. But without Rayudu – and without Suresh Raina – and with the team management not promoting Sam Curran up the order to break up a monotonously right-handed top six, there was little power or invention in the Super Kings line-up to challenge the Capitals’ bowlers.A better batting line-up could have put more pressure on the Capitals bowling, and possibly shown up a somewhat conservative batting performance too. After a half-century from Prithvi Shaw had powered them to 88 for no loss at the 10-over mark, the Capitals never really found their top gear, and failed to clear 180 despite losing only three wickets.Prithvi Shaw raises his bat after getting to fifty•BCCI

Shaw ensures early momentum for CapitalsShaw and Shikhar Dhawan are a right-left pair but they’re similar batsmen otherwise. They both relish width, score a lot of runs square on the off side, and aren’t quite as fluent when the bowling is at their body and cramping them for room. The Super Kings – who chose to chase despite the fact that teams batting first had won six of the first seven matches – bowled pace right through the Powerplay, and succeeded more often in cramping Dhawan for room than Shaw.Shaw ended the Powerplay with 27 off 23 balls, and Dhawan with 7 off 13. The Super Kings could have had Shaw early had they spotted an inside-edge to the keeper off Deepak Chahar in the first over of the game, but they didn’t and no one appealed. The spinners came on as soon as the fields could spread, and Piyush Chawla and Ravindra Jadeja went for 28 and 24 apiece in their first two overs. Shaw was severe on the legspin of Chawla, crashing him through the covers and then backward of point when offered shortish balls with a bit of width in his first over, and then using his feet to twice loft him over the covers in his second. Jadeja, bowling a touch too close to the hitting arcs of both batsmen, was slog-swept once each by both batsmen and driven to the cover boundary by Dhawan.Rishabh Pant works the ball away during his partnership with Shreyas Iyer•BCCI

A subdued second halfChawla came back through the second half of his spell, pegging the Capitals back with the wickets of both openers. The quicker ball did the trick both times; pinning Dhawan in front while trying to reverse-sweep, and beating Shaw for pace when he skipped out of his crease too early. At 103 for 2 in the 13th over, the Capitals were still calling all the shots with Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer at the crease and Marcus Stoinis and Shimron Hetmyer still to come, but the Super Kings bowlers kept them in check with some tight bowling on a pitch that was just beginning to slow down.Chahar and Josh Hazlewood – who came in for his IPL debut in place of Lungi Ngidi – slanted the ball across Pant and away from his favoured hitting arc, and even though the left-hander put away a few marginal errors in line and length, the tactic ensured he didn’t fully break loose. There was an excellent 19th over as well from Curran, which only went for four runs, as Iyer struggled to put away the left-armer who went around the wicket and cramped him for room while bowling his cutters into the pitch.A boundary each from Pant and Stoinis off Hazlewood, and four leg byes via an uncharacteristic MS Dhoni lapse behind the stumps, gave the Capitals 14 in their final over. They had only made 87 in their last 10 overs.A chase that never wasThe first two matches of the season had brought M Vijay 22 runs off 29 balls. There was little fluency here as well, as Kagiso Rabada – bowling Test-match lengths with a hint of outswing and two slips in place – began the second innings with five dots and a quiet tuck off the legs to fine leg. Then Axar came on specifically to target Watson. Before this game, their head-to-head, over seven meetings, was 38 balls, 42 runs, and five dismissals. Watson survived Axar’s first over, had a chance dropped at square leg off Nortje in the next over, launched Avesh Khan for a big six over wide long-on in the over after that, before failing to survive Axar’s second over. The ball was a typical Axar delivery – just short of a length, skidding on with the angle from left-arm around, designed to cramp the right-hander for room. Watson pulled it with more power than most batsmen may have managed, but picked out the fielder at deep midwicket. The Super Kings lost their second wicket off the last ball of the Powerplay, Vijay failing to make a clean connection against a hard-length ball from Nortje, and miscuing a catch to midwicket. The equation at that point was 142 from 14 overs. It was theoretically still achievable, but the Super Kings’ victory chances faded quickly, with no boundaries coming in the next 5.2 overs thanks to a mixture of decent bowling, a lack of urgency from the batsmen, and an inability to pull off the big hits when they tried them. Soon the Super Kings innings began to resemble an open net session, and a 54-run fourth-wicket stand between Faf du Plessis and Kedar Jadhav merely served to fill the time that remained until the overs ran out.

OPERÁRIO TENTA IGUALAR AS AÇÕES

Newcastle join the race to sign "one of the best defenders in the world"

da betobet: Newcastle United have entered the race to sign "one of the best defenders in the world" at the moment, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Newcastle transfer news

da dobrowin: The Magpies have made some superb signings in recent years, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak really kick-starting this new era and cementing Tyneside as a viable destination for top level talent.

A number of players have been linked with summer moves to Newcastle recently, with defensive, midfield and attacking signings all being looked at. Few individuals have been backed to head to St James' Park more often than Amadou Onana of late, and the Magpies are believed to be among the favourites to acquire the Everton star's signature.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Miguel Amiron is expected to leave Newcastle at the end of the season, and Irfan Can Kahveci has emerged as an option to come in for him. He has 19 goal contributions (12 goals and seven assists) in 22 Turkish Super Lig starts this season, invariably shining in a right-sided attacking role for Fenerbahce.

Eddie Howe could need further midfielder reinforcements if Bruno ends up leaving St James' this summer – that remains up in the air, as things stand – and Leicester City ace Wilfried Ndidi is a target for the Magpies, having helped the Foxes secure promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

Newcastle want one of world's top defenders

According to Mundo Deportivo, Newcastle have joined the race to sign Barcelona defender Jules Kounde, but a host of clubs are keen on snapping him up. The likes of Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United are all mentioned as potential suitors for the Frenchman, who is contracted at Barca until the summer of 2027.

jules-kounde-barcelona-newcastle-transfer-opinion-premier-league

Kounde stands out as a wonderful option for Newcastle with the summer window around the corner, even though he is reportedly keen on remaining at his current club for the time being. The France international started in his country's 2022 World Cup final defeat to Argentina, featuring in six matches in the competition and starting five of them.

Barca manager Xavi has heaped praise on him: "He was one of the transfers that I asked for. He’s one of the best defenders in the world right now. Stopping Mbappé was a collective effort. Kounde did amazing against Mbappé but Lamine [Yamal] also helped him a lot."

One of the biggest positives about Newcastle signing Kounde is not only would they be bringing in an elite defender, but his versatility allows him to excel as both a centre-back and a right-back.

Newcastle expected to make official bid for South American talent – report

He has a £13m release clause in his current deal.

ByHenry Jackson May 6, 2024

At 25, the Barca man is also still relatively young, meaning he wouldn't be arriving as a quick fix, and he could provide cover in two key positions, making up for the long-term injury absence of Sven Botman and also acting as a possible successor to Kieran Trippier in the process.

Jenny Gunn shines bright to snare Diamonds victory after Lightning look like winning

Former England star rolls back the years with unbeaten fifty

Northern Diamonds maintained their 100 per cent record in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy after veteran former England star Jenny Gunn rolled back the years to drag a victory from what had looked like a losing position at the Fischer County Ground, Leicester.Chasing 227 to win, Diamonds appeared to be heading for defeat when they slipped to 119 for 7 in the 30th over, still well short of the required rate and with wickets running out.But 34-year-old Gunn, who played for Lightning in the Kia Super League in 2018 and 2019, teamed up with another experienced campaigner in Beth Langston to add 81 in 15 overs for the eighth wicket before fellow World Cup-winner Langston fell for 37.That still left 27 required but Gunn stayed on to complete a 72-ball half-century before Phoebe Graham struck the winning boundary with seven balls to spare.Diamonds had beaten the Loughborough-based side by nine runs on the back of England star Nat Sciver’s century at the Emirates Riverside last Monday but even with Sciver and international teammates Katherine Brunt, Lauren Winfield and Linsey Smith all absent they proved too strong again. After being made available for the opening two matches in the competition, the England quartet have joined the national squad ahead of the series against West Indies at Derby later this month. Lightning lost opener Tammy Beaumont and left-arm spinner Kirstie Gordon for the same reason.Scotland wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Bryce made her third consecutive half-century and there were useful runs from Yorkshire-born Teresa Graves and Abbey Freeborn as Lightning made 226 despite not batting out their full 50 overs.Having won the toss, Diamonds opted to bowl first but saw the home side begin positively, Bethan Ellis taking well to the responsibility of opening in place of Beaumont. She and Bryce put on 51 before they were parted in the 10th over as leg-spinner Katie Levick entered the attack to have Ellis leg before sweeping.Diamonds had by then suffered a setback when Graham, who had taken the new ball alongside Langston, was ordered out of the attack after four balls of her fourth over, having twice been no-balled for full tosses above head height. Bryce, on 15, was caught off the second but allowed to continue her innings.Kathryn Bryce could not keep her sister company long before she was bowled through the gate by former Lightning teammate Gunn but Freeborn started with a flurry of aggressive hits and set the tone for a partnership with the younger of the Bryces that added 56 for the third wicket before Bryce, having completed her third half-century of the competition, hit a Hollie Armitage full toss straight to deep mid-wicket.Freeborn chopped on to Armitage’s leg spin and Lucy Higham gave a simple return catch to seamer Alex MacDonald as Diamonds began to made inroads at 139 for 5 but then an excellent, enterprising partnership between Teresa Graves and Nancy Harman added 58 for the sixth wicket to put Lightning in reach of a competitive score.Harman fell for 21 when she top-edged an attempted pull off Langston and Graves, dropped on 22, went on to reach 37 before she was leg before sweeping Gunn. Both players had recorded their highest scores in women’s List A cricket. Three of Lightning’s last four batters were making their competition debuts but only Leah Kellogg, run out as the non-striker, was unable to contribute.Lightning then made an excellent start with the ball, seamer Kathryn Bryce conceding only one scoring stroke in her first three overs before Rachel Hopkins, the Durham batter making her Diamonds debut, was leg before pushing at a ball from Kellogg. Netherlands international Sterre Kalis was then judged leg before to a Bryce yorker. Diamonds did not pick up a boundary until Ami Campbell, another Durham player making her first appearance, dispatched Bryce for two fours in the ninth over and at 27 for 2 from 10 overs, the visiting team were well off the pace.Armitage and Campbell added 55 for the third wicket but when the former was caught by Ellis, running in from the cover boundary, for 30, Diamonds were still well behind the required rate at 62 for 3 in the 19th over, by which point Lightning were in three figures. The wicket was a first for 20-year-old Northants all-rounder Alicia Presland on debut, having earlier seen Campbell dropped on 18.Campbell registered the match’s first six when she lofted a Higham full toss over the legside boundary and added a second when she clubbed Harman’s leg-spin over long on, following up with four through midwicket as she tried to up the scoring rate. It was a short-lived effort, however, Ellis safely pouching another catch in the deep as Harman claimed her scalp for 41. At the halfway stage, Diamonds were still 120 short of their target at 107 for 5, Higham having found a way through Layla Tipton’s defences in the previous over.Higham bowled MacDonald and added a third scalp when Grace Ballinger took an easy catch off a Bess Heath miscue, at which point Diamonds still needed 98 more runs with only three wickets in hand. But Gunn and Langston drew on their years of experience to turn the tables in Diamonds’ favour, rotating the strike superbly and relentlessly finding the gaps in the field. A delighted Harman eventually trapped Langston in front but Graham and Gunn kept their nerve to complete the win.

Spurs were rinsed by £12m flop who earned as much as Kane

da betsson: It’s been a tale of twists and turns at Tottenham Hotspur this season but Ange Postecoglou’s side have the chance to finish with a bang over these final few weeks in the Premier League.

da winzada777: While it’s easy to look at the campaign through the prism of top four qualification being the measure of success for a team like Tottenham, Postecoglou recognises the long-term goals and how things are not quite so linear – the Australian has been vocal on this topic in recent weeks.

Tottenham need time, and they need to continue the promising run of recruitment that has seen Postecoglou followed by first-team stars such as James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Brennan Johnson and Guglielmo Vicario.

Still, though, the throne at the front of the ship sits vacant, with Harry Kane yet to be replaced as the club’s star centre-forward. Heung-min Son, now skipper, has done an excellent job in a more central role this season but he’s not the long-term solution.

Who Spurs sign remains to be seen, but the club certainly haven’t got it right in the transfer market in the years gone by, Kane’s emergence over one decade ago easing the issues risen from failures in signing Roberto Soldado, Clinton N’Jie and Vincent Janssen since.

He’s not the bottom of the barrel, but rangy striker Fernando Llorente certainly didn’t enjoy his finest football at Tottenham, incredible Champions League contribution aside…

Why Spurs signed Fernando Llorente

Tottenham announced the signing of Llorente from Swansea City in a £12m deal back in 2017, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side beating London rivals Chelsea to the 32-year-old’s signature.

Now 39, Llorente retired last summer but he’s enjoyed a long, nomadic career that has notably seen him win the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship with Spain, the Europa League with Sevilla and three Serie A titles with Juventus.

He came tantalisingly close to playing a pivotal role in winning that elusive Champions League with Tottenham – but more on that later.

Spurs moved to sign the former Spain international following Kane’s injury struggles throughout the 2016/17 season, missing different portions with an ankle problem.

Moreover, N’Jie and Janssen had both been moved out and he offered something contrasting to the frontline, adding a target man figure for the likes of Christian Eriksen to whip balls in toward the danger area, having scored 15 Premier League goals with Swansea during his first campaign in England.

Llorente might have attained something of a cult status down N17 for that contribution, but there’s little question that, frankly, he didn’t produce the goods during his time at the club, especially when considering his success in the Premier League, or lack thereof.

Fernando Llorente's stats at Spurs

Across two campaigns for Tottenham, in all competitions, Llorente scored 13 goals and provided six assists across 66 matches, with just two of those strikes arriving in the Premier League.

Indeed, the 6 foot 4 titan only bagged one goal apiece across his two campaigns in the Premier League for Spurs and while he served his part with diligence, acting as a pillar from which forward play would often gravitate around, and towards, his goal record was disappointing given his success with Swansea.

He did, of course, score the all-important final goal against Manchester City as the Lilywhites advanced to the Champions League semi-finals in one of the most extraordinary ties in the competition history, bundling in late at the Etihad Stadium to seal the deal.

It was a momentous occasion, and while Llorente’s goal will stand the test of time as one of the most iconic and talked about modern Champions League moments, it’s not enough to allay his dismal scoring record domestically.

Especially when he was earning such a pretty pack packet….

Fernando Llorente's earnings at Spurs

Llorente is understood to have earned around £100k-per-week during his two-year stay at Tottenham, which works out to total earnings of just under £10m, £5m a season.

When combining this with the Spaniard’s salary, it can be deduced that he cost Tottenham a ballpark £21.5m across his duo of terms, working out to a contribution of roughly £1.6m per goal.

Llorente was on par with the squad’s highest earners, Kane and captain Hugo Lloris while surpassing Son in weekly earnings. During the same two-season period, the South Korean clinched 29 goals. Kane? He scored 65 goals across all competitions.

While Llorente did a job and was actually considered for re-signing, after his contract had expired, the monetary breakdown above illustrates why this would have been a bad idea.

Having aged further, after seeing his success in London limited to select moments, rather than fluid prosperity on an individual basis, it’s a good thing that such interest was shelved and forgotten about.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been one to err on the side of caution but Tottenham simply have to throw the kitchen sink at signing the perfect centre-forward this summer, replacing Kane and adding a dimension to their attack that could propel them to a place on equal footing with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.

With Kane graduating from the academy, it’s about time Tottenham got it right when obtaining a new focal frontman.
