One-sided contest as bowlers combine to roll Lightning aside for 81

Central Sparks 84 for 4 (G Davies 31) beat Lightning 81 (G Davis 4-12, Jones 3-14) by six wicketsCentral Sparks broke their duck at the third attempt in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, winning a low-scoring contest by six wickets with one over to spare as Lightning suffered a third defeat.Gwen Davies made 31, Eve Jones an unbeaten 27 and Thea Brookes 21 off 14 balls after Lightning had been bowled out for 81 in 19.1 overs.Off-spinner Georgia Davis, with 4 for 12, and all-rounder Jones, who took 3 for 14 with her left-arm seamers, each posted T20 career-bests with the ball.More than half of Lightning’s total runs were scored by their last-wicket pair as Shachi Pai and 19-year-old Sophie Munro put on 41 in 33 balls, Pai scoring 18 from 21, Munro unbeaten on 20 from 16 deliveries, including two nicely-executed offside boundaries.Munro then took 2 for 10 with her right-arm seamers in a Lightning attack that battled hard to contain the Sparks but ultimately had too little to defend. The 10th-wicket pair apart, only one other Lightning batter made it into double figures, albeit on a slow pitch that made it difficult to time the ball.Davis’s four dismissals were almost carbon copies as Abbey Freeborn, Teresa Graves, Sonia Odedra and Lucy Higham took it in turn to be out leg before, attempting to sweep.Jones profited from leading edges as Kathryn Bryce and Michaela Kirk found fielders on the off side, picking up her third success when Kirstie Gordon chipped back a return catch.Earlier, Issy Wong took a wicket with her second ball and another with her eighth as Beth Harmer and Sarah Bryce were bowled. With Lightning 40 for 9, Sparks might have envisaged a very early finish but it looked a more even contest once Davis and Jones had completed their stints. Pai eventually fell when she went aerial to Stephanie Butler’s off-spin but failed to clear mid-off.Sparks found it hard to get going and were six behind Lightning at nine for two from their Powerplay, having lost Marie Kelly and Milly Home in a double-wicket maiden from Munro.Davies and Jones were patient in adding 46 off 12 overs but when Higham had Davies stumped for 31, a requirement of 30 in as many balls could have been tricky. However, Brookes launched Gordon through midwicket for four and hit Odedra for six and four to change the picture as the 17th over went for 14 runs. Brookes swung and missed one from Bryce but with eight needed off 16 balls a couple of boundaries from Jones finished the job.
da winzada777: Jurgen Klopp has cemented himself as the stuff of legend at Liverpool, transforming Anfield and guiding his team to illustrious honours such as the Premier League and the Champions League across nine years of barnstorming brilliance.
da blaze casino: His successor, Arne Slot, arrives off the back of success in his Dutch homeland with Feyenoord, winning the Eredivisie in 2022/23 before clinching the KNVB Trophy last season. He plays good, purposeful pressing football, with a smattering of Pep Guardiola-esque possession techniques to promise an exciting new era.
But he needs to be backed. Liverpool might have enjoyed a resurgence during Klopp's final year but there are plenty of issues to address: Joel Matip's exit has left the Reds with three senior centre-backs, one of whom was playing in League One 13 months ago.
Moreover, several salient members of the squad have contract issues that need a quick resolution, while Luis Diaz is attracting interest from Barcelona and a decision must be made on whether the 27-year-old is to be sold.
Much to sort out, but FSG and Slot have their wits about them and will be confident to sculpt a high-class team capable of succeeding. Let's take a look at how it might look, shall we?
Liverpool-Dream-XI-Arne-Slot
1 GK – Alisson
Alisson Becker.
It wasn't the best of years for Alisson, who only completed 28 fixtures in the Premier League as he battled injuries, but the Brazil goalkeeper is still one of the very best in the business.
Aged 31, he's surely got plenty left in the tank, and while Saudi suitors might be sniffing around, with The Guardian even reporting in May that he is a top target, the colossal shot-stopper will be eager to stay put and fight for more silverware on Merseyside.
2 RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold
Trent Alexander-Arnold celebrates for Liverpool
Let's just put you here, Trent Alexander-Arnold. Nice and safe and away from Real Madrid's all-conquering machine. The Anfield vice-captain is one of the finest players around and will be expected to play a starring role in this new era in his home city.
The 25-year-old has posted 100 goal contributions from 310 appearances for Liverpool. From right-back. Slot will be keenly observing his performances in Germany this summer, with Gareth Southgate's desire to play him in midfield sure to raise some questions in the Liverpool manager's mind.
3 CB – Virgil van Dijk
Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool
For the first time in his Liverpool career, with any real constancy, Virgil van Dijk could find himself playing alongside Alexander-Arnold, shifted to his naturally favoured right side to accommodate Liverpool's new summer signing – but more on him in a moment.
It's easy to forget how steep Liverpool's defensive injury problems were last season, with pretty much every member spending a spell on the sidelines at one point or another.
Van Dijk, however, was ever-present. An implacable adversary for Anfield's opposition and an imperious leader. He scored the winning goal in the Carabao Cup final, he led by example. Liverpool's captain will be the main man once again come August.
4 CB – Willian Pacho
Willian Pacho in action for Frankfurt
Liverpool need to sign a new centre-back, and while a host of names have already been linked, the club would score a major win in landing Willian Pacho from Eintracht Frankfurt.
The German club are actually keen for Liverpool to act on interest in the 22-year-old titan and maximise profits, with Pacho valued at €60m (£51m).
Manager Tino Toppmoller said that his defending "is absolutely world-class". Young and dynamic, he's exactly what the Redmen need.
5 LB – Andy Robertson
Andy Robertson for Liverpool.
Andy Robertson split opinion last season but the Scotland captain endured an injury-hit year and still managed to produce spirited and creative performances. He also plays the kind of passing game that Slot demands from his full-backs.
As per Sofascore, the 30-year-old scored three goals and added two assists across 23 matches, completing 88% of his passes, creating ten big chances and averaging 2.8 key passes and 1.5 tackles per outing.
6 CM – Joao Neves
SL Benfica star Joao Neves
This would be the one. The statement signing to show that Liverpool and their new leader mean business. Joao Neves has attracted a long list of suitors for his maiden performances in Portugal, and while he has a £102m release clause, the 19-year-old is the real deal.

The Benfica midfielder – described as "special" by analyst Ben Mattinson – is shaping into quite the all-encompassing midfielder and would be a major upgrade on Wataru Endo, perhaps proving the difference in the fight for trophies under Slot.
7 CM – Alexis Mac Allister
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.
Reprising his starring role in the middle of the park, Alexis Mac Allister could find his game lifted to the next level alongside a robust young partner in Neves.
Endo did a solid job last season but the 31-year-old is not one of the leading holding midfielders in Europe, and the Portuguese's tough-tackling base could allow Mac Allister to play a multi-functioning, all-action role to perfection.
8 RW – Mohamed Salah
Mohamed Salah for Liverpool
There can only be one man on that right flank. Mohamed Salah might be entering the final year of his contract but the pointers suggest that he is going to be plying his trade at Anfield next season, and it's a good thing too.
The Egyptian, who turns 32 on Saturday, scored 25 goals and supplied 14 assists during the 2023/24 campaign, and while he fizzled out at the end, he is still one of the most frightening and destructive forwards on English shores and will be key in ensuring Slot's set-up is implemented smoothly.
9 AM – Dominik Szoboszlai
Dominik Szoboszlai scores for Liverpool
Dominik Szoboszlai ebbed and flowed during his first season in Liverpool colours and ended up on the periphery during Klopp's final weeks, starting just one of six Premier League games to close the campaign.
Still, the Hungary captain is a technically gifted and hungry midfielder, who may benefit greatly from Slot's 4-2-3-1 system, allowing him to advance to his favoured No. 10 role and away from the central, more industrious part that Klopp had him play.
10 LW – Crysencio Summerville
Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville
So, if Barcelona manage to mount something resembling a concerted approach for Diaz's signature, signing for something resembling Liverpool's €75m (£63m) price tag, then there's a perfect young replacement waiting to make the move.
Of course, we're talking about Crysencio Summerville, who might have failed to enjoy promotion to the Premier League with Leeds United last term but did everything in his power, scoring 19 goals, providing nine assists for his teammates and even being crowned the Championship's Player of the Year.
Fabrizio Romano writes that Liverpool have scouted the Dutchman for months and could make their move soon, and at £30m, he could mark the dream addition to a team in transition – even suggested to be cut from the same cloth as one Sadio Mane.

da bet7: There has been another twist in the tale involving who will be the next Leicester City manager, as Steve Cooper now looks to be the new frontrunner to replace Enzo Maresca.
da roleta: It felt almost inevitable at one point that Graham Potter would be occupying the Foxes dug-out next season, but as per football journalist Sami Mokbel, the newly promoted side are edging closer to the former Nottingham Forest boss being their chosen successor for the Italian instead.
There could now be some disappointment in the air at the King Power Stadium from supporters of the Foxes, with Cooper's win percentage in the Premier League standing at a low 21%, but the powers that be at Leicester must have seen something in the Welshman, to make him their next manager for the top-flight season ahead.
Cooper will hope to be backed in the transfer market to help Leicester consolidate themselves in the elite division, as rumours about incomings begin to heat up.
Leicester looking at entertaining Iceland international
According to a recent report in the Sunday Mirror, as relayed by TBR Football, Leicester are keen on adding Iceland international Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson to their ranks this summer, who now could be Cooper's first capture in the Foxes hot seat.
Both Newcastle United and West Ham United are also named as interested parties looking at the OH Leuven winger, who scored against England at Wembley in a 1-0 win for his nation before the Euros kicked off, terrorising Gareth Southgate's shellshocked Three Lions in the process.
Hammering home an early first-half effort past stand-in England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, the new Premier League side could be looking at the Scandinavian gem as a rival for Stephy Mavididi next season, who took the Championship by storm last campaign, with Leicester winning the league title at the end of the 46-game marathon.
What Thorsteinsson could offer Leicester
With no other real recognised left wingers in the Foxes camp right now minus Mavididi, Thorsteinsson signing on the dotted line soon could be a worthwhile capture as Cooper attempts to stamp his mark on his new Leicester team.
archie-gray-stephy-mavididi-leeds-opinion
Last season, playing out in Belgium, the in-demand 25-year-old picked up seven goals and seven assists from 40 clashes in all competitions.
Played through the centre as an attacking midfielder, or down the left wing last season, Thorsteinsson's lively nature – which was evident in the nine duels he went in for against England – was clear for all to see when donning a Leuven strip too, amassing nine yellow cards across those 40 games, as a tireless midfielder with a bite present in his game.

Some way off being as explosive as Mavididi when venturing forward over the last year, as can be seen when comparing the two wingers above, Thorsteinsson will still aim to push his ex-Arsenal counterpart all the way if signed, who managed 19 goal contributions in the second-tier.
Cooper loved hard-working utility figures, like the Icelandic Foxes target, when he was still at the helm at the City Ground, with figures such as Philip Zinckernagel never quite the main man under the Welsh boss at Forest, but he still impressively boasted seven goals and ten assists during the 2021/22 campaign, which ended in the glory of promotion.
Thorsteinsson could be just that for Cooper in the here and now, if he is to take the reins at the King Power shortly, as Leicester embark on a season back in the Premier League very soon.

The PSL schedule is set to be compressed to end by June 24•PCB
The sixth season of the PSL will resume from June 9, with a final set for June 24. The tournament will after all be played in Abu Dhabi, despite speculation in recent days that it was going to be moved to Sharjah. The compressed schedule means there will be as many as six double-headers, with the early games starting at 5pm Abu Dhabi time, and the evening matches at 10pm local time. Single matches will start at 8pm.The remaining league games will be played from June 9 to 19, the Qualifier and first Eliminator on June 21, the second Eliminator on June 22 and the final on June 24.*The fate of the tournament had been hanging in the balance for the last two weeks with several challenges around logistical arrangements and more crucially pending approvals from Abu Dhabi government. One of the main roadblocks was getting the necessary exemptions for the production crew from India and South Africa to land in the UAE. The delay in their visas and then clearances for chartered flights caused a delay as they are meant to undergo 10 days in quarantine on arrival. The seven-day isolation period for players and staff who arrived in the UAE via chartered flights from Pakistan ended on June 2 but a delay in the arrival of the production crew forced the PCB to rejig the schedule. The tournament was earlier meant to start not later than June 5 and they had considered Sharjah as an alternative where the quarantine rules are not as strict as in Abu Dhabi.Related

How the PSL plans to beat the Abu Dhabi heat
“Since its inception in 2016, the HBL PSL has embraced and overcome numerous challenges, only to emerge as a stronger and competitive league year-on-year,” Wasim Khan, the PCB chief executive, said in a statement.”The enhancement and credibility of the brand remains critical to the PCB and I am pleased that we have continued to take decisive actions in the face of ongoing pressures and major challenges outside of our control over the last 10 days. Everyone has worked tirelessly to find solutions and way forward, and I am delighted that we are now in a position to announce the complete schedule. The schedule for the PSL’s resumption in 2021•ESPNcricinfo Ltd
“There was a consensus between the PCB and the franchises that it was imperative to complete the remaining matches in 2021 so that we have a clean 2022 [for the next season]. Now, after overcoming all obstacles through due diligence and careful planning, I believe we have collectively achieved the desired objective that was set in March following the postponement. The PCB has had lengthy negotiations with the Abu Dhabi government to stage the tournament in the emirate, and got clearances too recently, but the resumption has not been as smooth as it was expected. Over the last 15 days, the PCB even came close to postponing the event further, but the board has now managed to put most of the pieces together and finalise on June 9 as the resumption date. One of the biggest challenges was to wrap up the league before June 22 as the Pakistan squad was set to fly to England on June 23 which was later changed to June 25 after the ECB agreed to delay the start of the bilateral tour to accommodate the PSL. But there will be no change in the dates of the matches with the first game of the tour, an ODI in Cardiff, set to be played on July 8.The squad will land in Manchester from where they will be transported to Derby for the mandatory 10-day isolation period and training session. They will then move to Cardiff on two days before the first ODI.”We are grateful and thankful for the support and backing we have received from the UAE and Pakistan governments. I would like to thank the England & Wales Cricket Board for their flexibility, the Emirates Cricket Board, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, as well as all the franchise owners for backing our approach and supporting our decision-making.”Overall, over 300 personnel – both from Pakistan and overseas – are in Abu Dhabi and a majority of them (other than the ones from India and South Africa) have already completed their quarantine. Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars completed their quarantine and started training on Wednesday, while the other four sides will start training from today. Players and player support personnel, who have completed the mandatory seven-day room isolation and returned three negative tests, are allowed to integrate with their sides and participate in training sessions. The PCB had arranged chartered flights for arriving in the UAE but those who were left behind due to visa glitches were made to fly through commercial flights, including Quetta Gladiators’ Sarfaraz Ahmed, who, along with a few other individuals, was not allowed to board a commercial flight from Lahore and Karachi to Abu Dhabi via Doha on last Sunday. They flew a day later to take a different route via Bahrain. There are still over seven personnel, including players and support staff, waiting fo their visas.*1230 GMT: The story was updated after the PCB announced the fixtures on Thursday

Recent form under Nuno has offered some encouragement, but the Portuguese faces an uphill battle to drag his squad away from the relegation zone.
West Ham play Man United in a vital clash tonight, which has been made all the more important by Leeds United and Nottingham Forest’s victories this week, with Nuno desperate not to let the points gap at the bottom grow any further.
Securing a striker has also emerged as the club’s absolute priority ahead of the winter window.
Niclas Füllkrug’s disastrous spell appears destined to end after just 18 months, with the German international managing only three goals since his £27 million arrival from Borussia Dortmund.
His agent publicly admitted a January departure “makes sense,” and West Ham have already begun identifying replacements.

The imposing 6 foot 5 striker has notched 34 goals in 63 appearances for the Belgian champions and could be available for just £17.5 million, representing excellent value for the east Londoners, who are reportedly in pole position after making contact.
West Ham also want a new defender and midfielder, according to insiders like ExWHUemployee, and this has been backed up by another former worker of the club.
Nuno making 'big plans' at West Ham in transfer revelation
Speaking to Football Insider, ex-West Ham senior scout Mick Brown has claimed that Nuno is making ‘big plans’ for the transfer market and wants to bolster an array of key positions.
Brown went on to claim that West Ham also have their eyes on a centre-half, midfielder and a top goalscorer, so there is a lot of work for David Sullivan to contemplate if they manage to stay in the top flight.
In terms of the budget for January to pull off this overhaul, West Ham may not have much to play with, as reports suggest they’re set to operate with limited spending power.
For Nuno to realistically get his wish, it’ll likely be over multiple windows, but that will again be dependent on West Ham’s standing come May.

Jofra Archer demonstrated that his return to fitness is firmly on track following a fiery performance for Sussex on the opening day of their LV= County Championship clash with Kent at Hove, and confirmed he would be ready to step back into the England bubble if selected for the two-Test series against New Zealand, at Lord’s and Edgbaston next month.Archer claimed 2 for 29 in 13 well-grooved overs, with both of his scalps coming in his opening four-over spell, including his England team-mate Zak Crawley, who was caught behind for 7. Kent were rolled aside for 145 inside 55 overs, with Archer’s fellow England prospect, Ollie Robinson, also starring with 3 for 29 in 18 overs. It was Archer’s first Championship appearance for Sussex since September 2018, and potentially his last of the season too, given that the county has no fixture in next week’s round of games – the last that England’s Test players will be able to play ahead of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, beginning on June 2.But, after a low-key outing for Sussex’s second XI against Surrey last week, he assuaged many concerns about his recovery from both a long-term elbow injury, and an operation to remove a shard of glass from the middle finger of his right hand.”It’s great to play again with the [Sussex] lads who I’ve played with nearly all of my career,” Archer told the ECB Reporters’ Network afterwards.”My fitness is fine, I thought I bowled okay. I played in the second team last week and it’s good to get some confidence and I felt fine. I bowled in short spells for protection in case we had a long day but it was overcast, which helped a bit. There was a bit of management, but it all worked out.Related

“With the [elbow] injury I have tried not to get too frustrated,” he added. “If I’m fit, I guess I will play in the Test series and I feel alright. I would ideally have another game next week but we’re off and then we play Northamptonshire. I don’t know what the plan is but I’d be happy to play again before the Test series. I’d be happy to go into the bubble again.”Archer is sure to be joined in the bubble by Crawley, who made a career-best 267 against Pakistan in last season’s England campaign, but he’s looking forward to heading to Lord’s with the bragging rights after getting the better of their short-lived duel.”I bowl to Zak Crawley in the [England] nets and I have done that quite a bit,” Archer said. “Obviously, you’re never out in the nets so it was good to get him out here, with umpires.”It remains to be seen whether Robinson, too, has done enough to earn a Test debut, but after claiming 28 wickets at 13.35 – and with England indicating that they will offer chances to some new faces – the signs are so far promising.”Hopefully Ollie Robinson will get his [England] chance this summer,” Archer said. “We all know what he can do, he’s a talented bowler and his stats prove that.”
