Rock-bottom Sussex are wholehearted but callow as recruitment falls under scrutiny

Wayne Madsen makes opening-day hundred as all-in youth policy leaves Sussex youngsters floundering

Reconstruction work continues around the main entrance to the Hove County Ground. The Sussex Cricketer pub where players and supporters would mix after play has been demolished and plans for a wider redevelopment of the site emphasise “the village green feel of the club.” There is a joke here that is too obvious but too cruel to complete.Obvious, because Sussex entertained Derbyshire today in the equivalent of 18th place in the Championship, the one and only side below their visitors. Cruel, because the team comprises disproportionately of youngsters taking formative steps at professional level. They must have potential to have reached this far in the game and in fact it was more university than village: a wholehearted but callow bowling attack simply too inconsistent to make regular inroads.Sussex reached a nadir last week with defeat by an innings to Leicestershire, an unfortunate coincidence as Leicester were the side they trounced – by an innings – to complete their first title in 2003. The latest result drew criticism from Matt Prior, the former England wicketkeeper who played in that game 18 years ago. “Heart-breaking for these young players, the fans and the members,” he wrote in a tweet since deleted. “They are all being let down. It’s not about money, it’s club management and decision making at the top. Can’t sit back any longer.”In late-August, Sussex fielded a team against Worcestershire with an average age of 19. Ten had come through their own academy including five from Eastbourne, belying the image of the town as a giant retirement home. Although the squad of 13 for Derbyshire was slightly older it still featured six teenagers and only two players over 22. The demise of the Sussex Cricketer has at least spared the embarrassment of being asked for proof of age on their own ground.Related

Whiteley heads for Hampshire after triumphant Brave stint

Finn departs Middlesex after 17 seasons to sign for Sussex

Fault obviously rests with a recruitment policy leaving such imbalance between youth and experience, and a wage structure that has prioritised Twenty20 over the Championship to an extreme degree, leaving chief executive Rob Andrew under scrutiny. In contrast to the side that reached Finals Day at the weekend, the four-day team has a reckless imbalance between youth and experience. This should change; Fynn Hudson-Prentice has already arrived from Derbyshire and Steve Finn will join from Middlesex for next season. More signings are likely, and with the appointment of a full-time captain delayed until the winter following Ben Brown’s midsummer sacking, the club may be leaving the post open to attract an overseas player such as Travis Head, who has unfinished business after a poor 2021.Realistically, though, how far can anyone take a club like Sussex in the modern age? Because this is more than the tale of one county club. More ominous than poor results are the departures of Phil Salt and Chris Jordan. They are far from the first pair to leave non-Test counties, but the Hundred seems sure to increase the volume of moves to host counties. Derbyshire themselves may be the next to see the pulling power of the competition if speculation that Matt Critchley will move to Glamorgan having played for Welsh Fire this summer proves accurate, while Ross Whiteley left Worcestershire for Hampshire this week after a successful stint with Southern Brave.Perhaps Sussex are ahead of the game. If the Championship, rather than the Royal London Cup, is threaded around The Hundred next season then the type of semi-development side they have fielded recently will become the norm across the competition. The four-day playing field would be levelled in the summer months and the standard of their younger players measured in a clearer context of like against like. But here’s the rub. In the longer run, who will benefit from their strategy? Some of the youngsters will fall by the wayside, others will forge livings from the game. And if one or two emerge as serious cricketers, will they stay at Hove or be lured by offers that Sussex, and the other non-Hundred counties, simply cannot match? It is a very vicious circle of youngsters struggling while they develop, then leaving a gap once they are mature and courted. At least when Alan Hansen famously predicted that Manchester United would win nothing with kids there was no doubting they would be trying to win with United and nobody else.Prior thinks the loss of the two players reflects the culture at the top of the club rather than the lure of the new competition – no matter the coincidence of Salt moving to Old Trafford, home to his Hundred team as well as his new county, Lancashire. To Prior, the loss of Salt, was “absolutely devastating for a club hanging on to the edge right now.” How could this happen, he asked rhetorically. “So sad for a club that not long ago was one of the best in the country and attracted players, not one where players wanted to leave.”Wayne Madsen drives on his way to a hundred•Getty Images

Walter Gammie, a member, offers a balanced view of the campaign. “There is nothing better than seeing young players coming through and making you go ‘wow’,” he says. “It is genuinely exciting and I have thoroughly enjoyed this season for that reason. But I think the feeling is mixed, some members feel the club is just a little bit rudderless, that they are not quite certain what they want to achieve and make no suggestion of trying to be competitive in the Championship.”The club must have had some knowledge through the schools of pretty good lads in the system. You see [James] Coles, [Danial] Ibrahim, Archie Lenham and Ali Orr, [Joe] Sarro and [Henry] Crocombe and [Jack] Carson, but for all that promise they are not ready to carry the side and so you wonder whether it is an unfair burden on them. I saw Tom Haines make his debut against Kent at 17 having scored no end of runs at Hurstpierpoint [College] as a schoolboy and now you see him comfortable at this level. But it has taken five years for him to have his breakthrough season. They need time.”Haines, standing in as captain at 22 since Brown’s removal from the helm, led today in a way that members would like, maintaining a good over rate, trying as many as eight bowlers and posting a third man – everything except calling for the return of three-day cricket on uncovered pitches. His own passion was evident in the scream when Wayne Madsen reached a hundred a few balls after surviving an lbw appeal.Though not at Hove for this match, Gammie would have approved of the absence of mutiny among the deck chairs and stands. Supporters generally are good at recognising the difference between players trying but struggling, and any swinging the lead. Carson established some control with his offspin before tea, Crocombe struck in successive overs to stop Derbyshire’s attack on the new ball while Jamie Atkins, on his return from a shoulder injury, reminded of a young Steve Harmison: rangy, long-levered, occasionally sharp and sometimes quite nasty… but mostly erratic. To his great credit he was still running in hard at 5.40pm to deny Critchley his hundred. Whatever the group lacks for the time being, they have plenty of heart.

Three European clubs make contact to sign Aston Villa ace alongside Duran

da pinup bet: Amid an incredibly impressive transfer window on the incomings front, Aston Villa could be set to bid farewell to a wantaway defender alongside young striker Jhon Duran.

Aston Villa transfer news

da doce: The Villans were already left with little choice but to show Douglas Luiz the door earlier in the summer to comply with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules – and may now have their hand forced once again. This time, however, there's no PSR involved. Instead, it is unhappy players seemingly pushing for exits, one of whom is Jhon Duran.

Imagine him & Onana: Aston Villa frontrunners to sign Douglas Luiz 2.0

Unai Emery could be about to sign a two time Champions League winner

ByRoss Kilvington Jul 26, 2024

The 20-year-old forward has been the subject of interest from West Ham United, who are considering a bid to match Aston Villa's £40m price tag before the transfer window slams shut at the end of next month. Duran made his feelings clear on social media, performing an 'Irons' gesture in an Instagram video, despite still being an Aston Villa player.

Duran is reportedly not the only player currently unhappy in the Midlands. According to Football Insider, Alex Moreno wants to return to Spain this summer following interest from three La Liga clubs. Sevilla, Villarreal and Valencia have all reportedly registered their interest in the wantaway left-back, who may find himself surplus to requirements at Villa Park following Ian Maatsen's arrival.

Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno.

A deal to sell Moreno is likely to be far simpler and cheaper than the one to sell Duran given that Unai Emery has more than enough cover down the left-hand side, with both Maatsen and Lucas Digne to call on. Therefore, it would come as little shock if the 31-year-old did complete a move away from the Midlands this summer.

Aston Villa no longer need Moreno

Now 31 years old and likely falling down the pecking order after the arrival of Maatsen, it makes sense for all parties that Moreno is granted his wish of a move away from Villa Park this summer. Maatsen more than proved his worth on loan from Chelsea at Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund last season and must now emerge ahead of both Digne and Moreno as Emery's first-choice left-back.

Of course, Moreno's potential exit won't take away the praise he initially received from Emery, with the Spaniard saying via BBC Sport when the left-back first arrived: "Alex is a good player that can help our squad. He has been one of the top left-backs in La Liga over the past few seasons and we are delighted to have him here."

And now, return to Spain and the chance to reclaim his place as one of the Spanish top flight's best left-backs may await, with Moreno in need of game time – and therefore a summer departure. With the season fast approaching, he will hope for it to come his way sooner rather than later.

Talks open: £15m Man City player set to leave as club close in on transfer

da bwin: A £15m player could now seal an exit away from Manchester City in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh transfer update.

Man City transfer news

da apostebet: Exciting transfer rumours continue to circulate at the Etihad, with Spain star Dani Olmo reportedly closing in on a move this summer, fresh off the back of a hugely successful Euro 2024 campaign with his country. He ended the tournament as joint-top scorer, having initially been behind Pedri in the pecking order, doing no harm to his reputation whatsoever.

An alternative to Olmo has also reportedly been lined up, with Crystal Palace and England ace Eberechi Eze also seen as an option to come in. The 26-year-old isn't without suitors this summer, however, and the Eagles will find it hard to keep hold of one of their most prized assets.

Adam Wharton's stock has risen greatly this year, having surprisingly made England's Euros squad, and he has been linked with a summer switch to City, too. The 20-year-old looks like a player of huge potential and could be considered a long-term replacement for Rodri in the deep-lying midfield role, even though matching the legendary Spaniard could be extremely difficult.

Then there's Joao Neves, who is also wanted by the likes of Liverpool as well as City, who could cost as much as £105m, having emerged as a massive prospect at Benfica.

£15m Man City player set to leave

According to a new report from Football Insider, Manchester City have "given the green light" for Callum Doyle to leave the club in the current window, valuing him at £15m.

The report also states that "Norwich are in talks" to sign the 20-year-old, with "other Championship clubs" also believed to be interested in snapping him up. It is the Canaries who are "close" to completing a deal, although it doesn't state if it will be a loan or a permanent transfer.

This summer feels like the natural time for Doyle to head out again, with his current contract not expiring until 2027, allowing the club to make good money for him or to gain more experience on loan. Former manager at Coventry City, Mark Robins, has lavished him with praise in the past, making it clear how highly he thinks of him:

"I think he’s a really talented player who has everything he needs to have a brilliant career in the game. Technically he’s very, very good and he’s learning the other bits and pieces. There’s clearly more work to be done and that will determine where he will end up playing the majority of his career. But he’s at a brilliant football club [in Manchester City]. They have great coaches there as well, and have done a great job with him so we have been the beneficiaries of his talents this year."

Markram hopes exposure to pressure moments at IPL will come in handy at T20WC

After spending four weeks with Punjab Kings in the UAE, Markram feels conditions are easiest for batting in Abu Dhabi, and most difficult in Sharjah

South Africa’s batters will experience the best and the worst of run-scoring conditions in the UAE at the T20 World Cup, according to Aiden Markram. After spending the last four weeks with Punjab Kings in the UAE for the IPL, Markram has decided that conditions are easiest for batting in Abu Dhabi, and most difficult in Sharjah, but still tough across the venues.”Each ground was different. That was something I didn’t expect; I thought it would be quite generic. But each ground had its own set of challenges,” Markram said. “The pitches weren’t the easiest to bat on, but as the batter gets in he can still take the game away from the opposition. It’s tougher for newer batters coming in. Sharjah was probably the toughest batting wicket out of the three here, and Abu Dhabi was probably the nicest to bat on.”South Africa open the Super 12 stage of the competition against Australia in Abu Dhabi before moving to Dubai to play West Indies and then to Sharjah and back to Abu Dhabi, for two games against qualifiers, and conclude the pool stage against England in Sharjah. Though South Africa are entering the tournament on the back of three successive T20I series wins, only one of those – against West Indies in June – was against opposition they will face in this event. They have also lost to both Australia and England (twice) in T20I series in the Mark Boucher era and have historically tripped against both those teams in major tournaments. But Markram isn’t dwelling too much on all that. “We’re not bringing too much baggage into this World Cup. Everyone here is pretty free-spirited and not too fazed about being at a World Cup, in a good way. Everyone’s very calm so far,” he said. But there are ghosts around this squad. Eight of them – nine if you include reserve Andile Phehlukwayo – were part of the 2019 50-over World Cup, where South Africa turned in their worst major tournament result and were the first team to be eliminated.Aiden Markram played in the middle order for Punjab Kings in IPL 2021•BCCI

“Obviously we’ll try not to make the same mistakes that we did in 2019, but this is a different format and completely different conditions, and we’ve got a completely different side,” Markram said. “We haven’t had too many chats about that World Cup. In 2019, when conditions didn’t suit our plans, we almost didn’t have other plans to fall back on. That’s been addressed, and we’ve got a way of cricket we’d like to play against each team.”But if conditions on the day don’t allow for that we have to be smarter and have another plan to fall back on. Having the skill set to trust in that change of plan has been important. Over the last 12 to 18 months the team have up-skilled themselves. That’s probably the biggest thing we can take from the 2019 World Cup.”Markram is one of the best examples of that. Since the 2019 World Cup, he has shown marked improvement against spin, had his best tour of the subcontinent when South Africa toured Pakistan earlier this year, has established himself in white-ball cricket and earned his first IPL deal, which taught him about batting in a different position in the shortest format. “It was a great experience. I was in a less familiar role and it was nice to be exposed to that at a high standard of cricket, and to learn on the job,” Markram said. For South Africa, Markram has batted in the top three in nine out of 13 T20I innings, for Punjab Kings, he was at No. 4 or 5 five times in six innings. He found the main challenge of batting in the middle-order to be finding the balance between building an innings and taking on a finishing role. “Guys who consistently finish games well in terms of high strike rates and the ability to find the boundary having just walked to the crease is something I’ve got a new appreciation for,” Markram said. “Because if you walk in and a team is 30 for 3, and you need to build a partnership to get to something that’s half-defendable. Neither of those roles are easy.”Neither was the pressure of a tournament like the IPL. Punjab Kings finished sixth on the points table, after losing eight matches – three in this half of the competition. They also won three matches in this half and four of their six games were decided in the last over. “All our games were close. We would have liked to get over the line more times than we did,” Markram said, indicating that the experience would come in handy ahead of the T20 World Cup.”In T20 cricket, at a World Cup or domestic or international series, results come down to the last three overs if not the last ball. It was good to be exposed to that, because I’m sure games are going to go to the wire at the World Cup. It’s about dealing with that pressure in the moment when two to three balls could change the whole outcome of the game.”

Because of the non-availability of DRS, the three matches will now be played as a standalone bilateral series

Pakistan’s three-match home ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on September 17 in Rawalpindi, will not count towards the ICC World Cup Super League, and will instead be played as a standalone bilateral series. The PCB and NZC agreed to this change of status due to the non-availability of the Decision Review System (DRS) for the series.ESPNcricinfo understands that the series could have gone ahead as part of the Super League even without DRS had the two boards agreed to do so, but New Zealand were not prepared to play a high-stakes series without the use of the technology. The PCB and the series broadcasters, it is learned, were unable to find an ICC-approved provider for the technology in time for the series.New Zealand are set to visit Pakistan once again in the 2022-23 season for two Tests and three ODIs. The two boards have agreed to play those three ODIs as a Super League series.Pakistan have played nine Super League matches so far, and have picked up four wins for a total of 40 points, which puts them sixth on the table as it currently stands. New Zealand have only played three Super League games so far, winning all three and picking up 30 points.Of the 13 teams in the 2020-23 Super League cycle, eight – hosts India and seven other top-ranked teams – will qualify directly for the 2023 World Cup. The bottom five teams will go into a qualifying tournament alongside the best teams from the lower rungs of the qualification pathway.
