Perfect Piroe upgrade: Leeds chasing late move for £45k-p/w PL ace

da heads bet: Leeds United are leaving it late when it comes to getting bodies into the building, with the next few days expected to be dramatic before the transfer window officially slams shut.

da betano casino: Both Largie Ramazani and Manor Solomon have entered Elland Road in quick succession, but more new faces are expected to join, with the likes of Roland Sallai on the predicted Whites shopping list among a whole host of other names.

Daniel Farke will want to add in a new attacking midfielder if he can, with Georginio Rutter breaking everyone's hearts in West Yorkshire when he moved on to Brighton and Hove Albion, as this exciting target now emerges on to the Leeds agenda.

Leeds transfer news

As report by journalist Alan Nixon, via Football League World, Sheffield United are another new Championship club prepared to battle it out for the services of AFC Bournemouth gem Philip Billing, who has also attracted the interest of Leeds.

Cherries manager Andoni Iraola has stated that he wants to keep Billing situated at the Premier League outfit, however, but an increase in game-time could well see the 28-year-old be tempted to relocate to Elland Road, with only 12 minutes of action coming his way so far in the new top-flight season from two games to date.

The Scandinavian star would take the second tier by storm if he was snapped up as a statement purchase right at the death, with Joel Piroe bumped way down the pecking order at Leeds if Billing was to enter at the last minute, when you consider the Dane's unbelievable numbers at the level in the past.

What Billing can offer Leeds

The former Huddersfield Town man would amass a very impressive haul of ten goals and ten assists from 40 clashes last time he was playing in the second tier, with the Cherries number 29 capable of playing either as a traditional central midfielder or behind the lone striker where Piroe has struggled recently.

Piroe has fallen out of favour with the Leeds masses of late, even with 13 goals and three assists notched up last season in the Championship, with his absence from the starting line-up away at Sheffield Wednesday last time out actually benefitting the Whites, as Brenden Aaronson fired home the opening goal in the 2-0 victory in his spot.

More willing to get on the ball and make things happen when contrasted with Piroe, with ten more big chances created during the 2021/22 season compared to the Dutchman's 2023/24 output, Billing would make the hole left behind by Rutter's departure feel less obvious, with the Dane always willing to receive a pass and create an opening.

Bettering Piroe's duels won count as well, with five won on average per Championship clash on the way to automatic promotion being clinched, Billing would be a great body to have around Farke's nervy camp during crunch games, when a make-or-break decision could decide a nail-biting affair.

Also capable of performing when making the step-up to the Premier League, with Billing impressively finding the back of the net seven times during the 2022/23 season, the £45k-per-week target – as per Capology – feels like a perfect fit for the Whites, as they strive to win promotion once more.

It remains to be seen whether Billing – who David Wagner once described as a player who "has everything" – can be persuaded to move back down to the Championship, but Leeds must push on to try and make this statement capture happen if they're truly serious about their promotion chances.

Leeds could sign Farke's own Hernandez with late swoop for "beautiful" ace

The Whites have already had one offer turned down for the Championship playmaker.

Shadab's all-round display seals Pakistan's series win

His 12-ball 28 set the game up, before his thrifty 0 for 22 applied the brakes on West Indies

Sreshth Shah14-Dec-2021

Shadab Khan hit three sixes in an unbeaten 12-ball 28•PCB

For the second night in a row, Pakistan’s well-rounded bowling attack saw the home side successfully defend a total, and in the process gave the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead over West Indies in the three-game T20I series.Ten overs into the chase, West Indies looked on course to chase the 173 target down courtesy opener Brandon King’s elegant strokeplay, but it all unravelled rather quickly thereafter.Shadab Khan strangled the batters with 0 for 22, Mohammad Nawaz got crucial wickets, Mohammad Wasim Jr bowled to his plans, Shaheen Shah Afridi claimed three middle-order victims in one over and Haris Rauf dismissed King – and the tenth wicket off the game’s last ball – to seal the deal for Pakistan. In hindsight, though, Shadab’s more crucial contribution came with the bat and not the ball. His 12-ball cameo of 28 in the first innings ended up being the difference between the two sides with Pakistan winning by only nine runs.Akeal Hosein’s encoreOn Monday, Hosein got Babar Azam for zero in his spell of 1 for 19. Tonight, he indirectly effected Babar’s dismissal for 7 when he strangled the run-scoring from one end after Pakistan chose to bat. Mohammad Rizwan tried to look for a run that wasn’t there and ran his opening partner out in the third over when they took on Hayden Walsh Jr’s arm from backward point. Hosein’s stock ball was the length delivery that drifted into the right-handers when the ball was brand new, not allowing them to free their arms. When Fakhar Zaman came in, West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran persisted with Hosein despite what conventional wisdom suggests for a left-arm fingerspinner. He dragged back a delivery’s length – in the first ball of the fifth over – after spotting Fakhar giving him the charge, and the away movement in the air took the ball past the bat for Pooran to stump him. Hosein bowled four straight overs after taking the new ball, and was done for the evening by the seventh over, taking 1 for 16 with 14 dot balls. At the time, Pakistan’s score read 55 for 2 and with Rizwan and Haider Ali at the crease, the situation was eerily similar to the first T20I.A middle-order wobbleBut it wasn’t to be like the first T20I where Rizwan and Haider struck exquisite fifties to lift Pakistan to 200. Instead, Rizwan fell for a 30-ball 38 off sixth bowler Odean Smith’s first delivery of the match, just when he looked to accelerate. In Smith’s next over, Haider was caught at deep point for a struggling 34-ball 31. Neither of those were wicket-taking deliveries though, Rizwan was out to a wide slower ball that he bunted to cover and Haider had almost enough in his shot for a six after heaving a wide ball over point. The 15th over brought another wicket with Nawaz sweeping a Walsh delivery strongly, but was gone for 1 after finding the only fielder in the deep on the leg side. With three wickets falling for 25 runs, it seemed that Pakistan would miss out on the impetus they needed for a big whirl in the death overs.Iftikhar, Shadab turn it onIftikhar Ahmed, though, stayed aggressive despite the fall of wickets. He came in after Rizwan’s wicket, and punished Walsh’s half-tracker early for four. He then dealt in quick runs between the wickets in Asif Ali’s company. And when Oshane Thomas brought back some extra pace in the 18th over, he punished the tall right-arm quick by drilling two sixes over deep midwicket and long off. However, just when Iftikhar looked to give Pakistan a big flourish, he was caught behind off Thomas’ last ball of the over for a 19-ball 32.With two overs to go and Pakistan having gained some momentum after the middle-overs trouble, Shadab took over. The 19th began with him hitting a four and a six, and the 20th saw Shadab smacking Romario Shepherd over his head for two sixes. Shadab uses the depth of the crease to get right under the ball, and his 12-ball cameo of 28 lifted Pakistan to a competitive 172 for 8.Brandon King gave a good account of himself•PCB

King’s regal inningsHis first boundary was streaky, an inside edge down to fine leg, but after that, the opener found his range. Nawaz, who shared the new ball with Afridi, was drilled over long on for six in the second over and Rauf was swatted over mid on in the penultimate ball of the powerplay. In between, he resorted to safe shots along the ground while hitting occasional fours after watching Shai Hope and Shamarh Brooks return to the dugout for low scores. While King got on top of the bowlers, the No. 4 Pooran struggled to hit the gaps. He scored only 20 runs in his first 24 balls. Then came Pooran’s first six in the 11th over, cracking Nawaz over deep square leg but was holed out next ball as he tried to repeat the process. In Rovman Powell’s company, King reached his fifty in 35 balls by finding a boundary behind point in the 13th over and then swatted Shadab for a one-handed six over the bowler’s head. But like King’s previous partner Pooran, Powell was not fluent, and was gone for an 11-ball four.Nonetheless, with six overs to go and six wickets in hand, the target was within touching distance for West Indies, more so with King out there and the line-up possessing big hitters right up to No. 9. He brought the equation down to 55 off 29 after smacking Rauf over deep midwicket for six, but just like Pooran, was out next ball trying to repeat a maximum. His 43-ball 67, though, had set the base for rest of West Indies’ batters to get to the target with a few big shots every over.Shaheen too hot for West IndiesBut Afridi still had two overs up his sleeve when West Indies needed 46 off 24, and the first of them brought three wickets. Odean found Asif on the boundary line, Dominic Drakes edged one to Rizwan and an almost-yorker rattled Walsh’s stumps. The score of 127 for 5 now read 131 for 8, only one result likely from here on.But Romario Shepherd had one last throw of the dice. After pumping a six in the 18th and a four in the 19th, the equation read 23 off the last over that was to be bowled by Rauf.Shepherd eked out two off the first ball and followed it up with a six over square leg. After refusing the No. 11 a single, Shepherd then found the third-man boundary to bring the equation down to 11 off two. The fifth ball had four written all over it after Shepherd drilled a shot over cover, but Asif ran along the boundary line and got his thigh in the way to stop the four. And with the No. 11 on strike for the final ball, Rauf ensured Pakistan claimed all ten wickets for the second night in a row by bowling a yorker that was too good for Oshane.

Lopetegui’s own Gundogan: West Ham in contact over Ward-Prowse upgrade

da heads bet: West Ham United have been undergoing a midfield rebuild in recent years. Having lost Declan Rice last season, the Hammers acquired Edson Alvarez to fill his boots, and James Ward-Prowse to add quality in the midfield.

da supremo: This summer, the Hammers have managed to add Guido Rodriquez to the squad, and are still looking to add a technical midfielder to suit their possession-based brand of football. This could already spell the end for Ward-Prowse, who joined last season, as he could find himself further down the pecking order.

Ward-Prowse made 51 appearances for West Ham in all competitions last season, scoring seven goals, providing 12 assists, and totalling 4,112 minutes played.

West Ham transfer news

According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, West Ham have made initial contact to explore a deal for PSG midfielder, Carlos Soler. Direct talks will follow in the coming days with the players' camp, according to the report.

The Hammers will continue to work on outgoings as a priority, the report states, and this should also help towards getting the Soler deal over the line.

PSG midfielder Carlos Soler

Soler made 28 appearances for PSG last season in all competitions, scoring two goals, providing four assists, and contributing to ten clean sheets in his 1,277 minutes played.

Why Soler could be West Ham's Gundogan

When being discussed on Sky Sports, Soler was described as a "neat and tidy" midfielder, who Julen Lopetegui would really like. His technical profile would suit the brand of football the new manager is trying to install at the club.

On FBref's "similar players" feature, the playmaker is likened to a Premier League great, İlkay Gündoğan – who is set to make a return to Manchester City – among midfielders in Europe's top five leagues.

Former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

The addition of Soler could provide that uplift of progression in midfield, extra composure on the ball during the build up, and as previously mentioned, help Lopetegui integrate his style of play.

Not only could he seek to replicate the attacking impetus of Gündoğan – who racked up 98 goals and assists during his first spell at City – but the PSG star could also offer a direct upgrade on Ward-Prowse for the Hammers.

Stats taken from FBref

Soler averages 1.59 more progressive passes per 90 than Ward-Prowse, nearly double the amount of progressive carries per 90, and 0.45 more passes into the final third per 90. This extra progression is important for Lopetegui's system, allowing the likes of Lucas Paqueta to play higher up, alleviating him of deeper build-up responsibilities.

Against Aston Villa in their Premier League opener on Saturday, much of their progression in deep areas came from Paqueta dropping in to receive the ball, and playing through the lines. In an ideal world, he can receive the ball between the lines, closer to goal, where he can have an impact higher up the pitch.

It is also important for the midfielder to have composure on the ball, and a willingness to take the ball in traffic, which Soler shows with his higher passes attempted metric compared to Ward-Prowse, and higher pass completion numbers.

PSG player Carlos Soler

The main thing Ward-Prowse has over Soler is defensive action output, completing more tackles, blocks and interceptions than the Spaniard, but with Alvarez in midfield alongside him, and new defensive reinforcements such as Jean-Clair Todibo, Max Kilman, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, those defensive actions could be replaced quite easily.

All in all, it points to a deal that could prove a masterstroke for Lopetegui, while also allowing the new boss to find his own Gündoğan-esque attacking asset.

Chapman on impressive NZ return: 'Nothing beats being out in the middle'

Having been on the sidelines, he finally got some game-time after seven months, scoring a 50-ball 63

Saurabh Somani18-Nov-2021

Before Wednesday, Mark Chapman hadn’t played a competitive game since April 1•Getty Images

Mark Chapman has had such a long break between playing competitive games of cricket, that he isn’t quite sure when he was in the middle last. The cricket caravan might be hurtling along for viewers – and some players – from one bio-bubble to the next, but it’s thanks to that packed schedule that Chapman got to play for New Zealand after a gap of seven and a half months. For the record, Chapman last played a game on April 1 this year and didn’t face a ball, or bowl one, in that game. After that appropriately April Fool’s of a game from a personal point of view at least, Chapman was given the No.3 slot against India, in a T20I that began two days after New Zealand had suffered a draining defeat in the T20 World Cup final, and with several players sitting out.Related

Crafty Ashwin continues his white-ball evolution

Ashwin, Suryakumar, Rohit shine as India earn hard-fought victory

Chapman had been part of that stirring campaign, but from the sidelines, with the XI tough to break into. The long layoff was spent training with the team as part of the squad, but it was only when he had spent some time in the middle that Chapman’s fluency returned. From 20 off 24 balls at one point, he ended up with 63 off 50, setting New Zealand up for a good total.”To be honest, it was just nice to be out there,” Chapman said after the game. “Had a lot of training behind the scenes, but nothing beats the real thing of being out in the middle.”In World Cups, you play your best XI and if we’re going well, then more than likely you stick with your best team. So it just meant that I was on the sidelines for a bit. I did my best to support the guys in and around training.”You find ways to add context to your training. Obviously, being in and around this environment, you try and train the best you can given the situation and make the most of the opportunities to train. There was a lot of training in the background. I felt prepared, but I guess match-preparation wise it wasn’t ideal. But just happy to be out there.”New Zealand were taking the field against India on November 17, having lost the T20 World Cup final against Australia on November 14. While Chapman acknowledged there was some tiredness, he also pointed out how he and Todd Astle – who also didn’t get a game during the World Cup – relished the chance to get a game.”There was a natural feeling of a little bit of disappointment (at losing the final), but a lot of pride as well in the way we went about our business throughout the World Cup,” Chapman said. “We stayed authentic to the way we wanted to play and you know, the guys are true professionals. These games have come around pretty quick, it’s a three-match series in five days, and the guys are just doing what we do best and that’s playing our cricket and enjoying it.”The guys been a little bit tired, but we always play for New Zealand with pride. Particularly for myself and Todd, who have been on the sidelines, it was a really exciting moment to be playing.”Chapman put on 109 runs in 77 balls for the second wicket with top-scorer Martin Guptill, and said the senior pro helped him through his initial period.”We were probably a bit slow in the powerplay but we rotated the strike pretty well through the middle and managed to accelerate after that 10-over mark,” Chapman said. “Pretty happy to be batting with Gup and to put on, I think it was over 100 runs, so pretty happy with that partnership.”It just took a little bit to get my rhythm going. But once I faced a few balls and managed to get the pace of the wicket sort of, things tend to come back pretty quickly. Guppy was keeping me pretty good company out in the middle and giving me advice and telling me to take my time, watch the ball. So it was just a matter of us doing what we’ve been training for and what we’ve prepared for.”And while one T20 World Cup is done, there is another one just 11 months away given the squeezed pandemic schedules, and Chapman made his case stronger with his showing.”It’s been well reported that this BlackCaps team is pretty competitive to get into, so whenever you get your opportunity you’ve just got to do what you can to contribute to the team,” he said. “Thankfully I was able to contribute today.”If he continues to bat the way he did, Chapman may not need to struggle to remember when he last played.

Aston Villa can repeat Bailey masterclass by signing "incredibly fast" gem

da bet esporte: Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has done a wonderful job of strengthening his squad so far this summer, despite losing players such as Douglas Luiz and Moussa Diaby.

da bet7: Qualifying for the Champions League is certainly an incentive to join Villa as the likes of Ian Maatsen and Amadou Onana have moved to the Midlands this summer, joining from Chelsea and Everton respectively.

Ian Maatsen for Borussia Dortmund

With just under a month left of the summer transfer window, Emery might need to bring in another one or two players to add some depth to his side, especially as European commitments could drain the team.

Could the Spaniard turn to Germany in order to further bolster his first team squad, however, as he is on the lookout for another centre-forward ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Aston Villa eyeing up move for Bundesliga striker

Just a few days ago, Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg claimed that both Chelsea and Aston Villa had submitted offers to sign German striker Maximilian Beier from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

While an offer has been submitted, discussions with the club have not yet started. He would only cost €30m (£25m) due to his release clause, which is certainly an affordable figure for Monchi and Co this summer.

Villa have had some success in recruiting players from the German top flight over the previous few years, with Leon Bailey showing last season that there are some gems to be found on the continent.

Could Emery replicate this masterstroke by signing Beier before the end of the current transfer window?

Leon Bailey’s season in numbers

The Jamaican winger arrived in the Midlands during the summer of 2021 for a fee of £25m, which was a significant sum of money at the time, considering Europe was just a pipe dream.

After 28 goals in 119 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen during his spell in Germany, it looked as though Bailey would be an impressive signing for the club.

Aston Villa players including Douglas Luiz

Despite this, his first two seasons in England were a disappointment. Bailey scored only six goals across 54 matches in all competitions, hardly justifying the extravagant payout.

Things changed during the 2023/24 season, as Emery managed to bring the best out of the winger.

Bailey enjoyed his most productive league campaign of his career with regard to goals scored (10), while overall, he netted 14 times along with registering a further 14 assists from the right wing.

Can he build on this wonderful campaign during 2024/25? Especially as Champions League football will grace Villa Park, meaning he has the chance to shine on the biggest stage of all.

By signing Beier this summer, Emery can repeat the club’s Bailey masterclass…

Maximilian Beier’s statistics for Hoffenheim

The 21-year-old spent time on loan at Hannover 96 in the 2. Bundesliga, where he managed to score ten goals across two seasons, showing flashes of his talent.

This led to a return to Hoffenheim at the start of last season, and it didn’t take him long to make his mark for the club in the top flight.

Indeed, across his first eight Bundesliga matches, Beier scored eight goals while grabbing an assist, taking to life in the top flight with apparent ease.

Throughout the season, he scored against Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, indicating that he didn’t faze the elite during his eventual 16-goal haul for the club.

Maximilian Beier

When compared to his positional peers in Europe’s big five leagues, Beier ranks in the top 14% for non-penalty goals per 90 while also ranking in the top 11% for progressive passes received per 90 (8.33), showing that he gets into promising spaces in the opposition's final third to cause chaos among defences.

These qualities could give Emery another excellent option up top, taking some of the pressure from Ollie Watkins next season.

What Maximilian Beier could offer Aston Villa

Although he scored 16 league goals, Beier can offer much more going forwards. Indeed, he created four big chances in the Bundesliga, averaged 0.7 key passes per game and even succeeded with one dribble per game.

Of course, Emery will want another striker who can score 15 or more goals a season, but Beier’s all-round qualities could be a massive bonus to the Spaniard.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig hailed the centre-forward following his first full season in the German top flight, saying: “His first full season in the German top tier. Great time for the 21-year-old Hoffenheim academy graduate. Much more than just a goalscorer.”

This wasn’t the only praise directed towards him either, as Hoffenheim director Alexander Rosen claimed that Beier is “incredibly fast” and this trait will stand him in good stead against Premier League defenders.

A fee of £25m could be enough for Villa to secure his signature before the transfer window slams shut, allowing Emery to bolster his attacking options without breaking the bank.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

The 21-year-old has plenty of scope for development too and playing in the Champions League will expose him to the best teams and defences.

If he can impress in Europe’s premier club competition, the Midlands side will have a prodigious talent in their hands, one who will only get better and better under the Spaniard.

The next few weeks could prove to be an exciting time for the club as they seek further signings. With matches against some of the best sides in Europe coming up next season, bringing the best talent to the club will the main goal for Emery before the window closes later this month.
