The next Neto: Wolves have unearthed a new £50m+ star in the making

da realsbet: Wolverhampton Wanderers have sold some key players over the past two summer transfer windows. It has certainly had a knock-on effect for Gary O’Neil’s side, who are struggling this term, albeit while having now won their last two Premier League games.

da betsul: Indeed, whilst they made a healthy profit from those departures, they have no doubt halted the team’s progress under both former managers and current boss O’Neil alike. In 2023, Portuguese midfield duo Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes departed the Old Gold.

In the most recent summer, Max Kilman was one of the detrimental departures, given he was club captain and a key component of their defence.

Former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.

However, perhaps the most impactful sale has been that of Pedro Neto.

Neto’s Wolves career

Despite an injury-riddled time at Molineux, Portuguese winger Neto was superb for the Old Gold. He signed for the club from Italian side Lazio, for a reported fee of £14.1m in August 2019.

Wolves star Pedro Neto

It is fair to say that the tricky winger’s time at the club was a success. He played 135 times for the club, scoring 14 goals and grabbing 24 assists in that time.

His best campaign was in 2023/24, where the Portugal international scored twice and grabbed nine assists in just 20 games.

Sadly, injuries did play a part throughout his time in the Midlands. He had a total of seven injuries across his four years at the club, leading him to miss several lengthy periods of time. That included 297 days and 52 games for club and country with a knee injury.

However, the winger bounced back well from his fitness issues, and his form earned him a £54m move to Stamford Bridge to join Chelsea. He has played 15 times for the Blues so far, scoring three and assisting three in that time.

Neto was certainly a major sale for the Old Gold and is no doubt a player they miss this season. Worryingly, there could be someone else who follows in his footsteps and leaves the club for a large fee.

Wolves’ next big sale

The player in question here is Rayan Ait-Nouri. The 23-year-old wing-back has been superb in a largely poor season for the Old Gold so far, continuing his impressive form from the past few seasons. He cost the club £9.5m from French side Angers in 2021, after spending the previous campaign on loan from the club.

Ait-Nouri

He has been sensational for O’Neil’s side in 2024/25. The Algerian international, who was described as “underrated” by football analyst Ben Mattinson, has played 12 times in the Premier League, scoring three goals and grabbing two assists. That included a goal and assist against Brentford in a losing cause, a game that ended 5-3 to the Bees.

There can be statistical comparisons made between the Wolves defender and some of the most enterprising attacking left-backs in world football. One of those is AC Milan and French defender Theo Hernandez, who has two goals and two assists in ten Serie A games this term.

The pair are both the types of full-backs who often act like wingers, and with their creative flair it might not be surprising to see their passing stats are so similar, as noted on FBref.

This term, Ait-Nouri averages 1.08 key passes and 3.24 progressive passes per game, with the Milan star slightly more, playing 1.62 key passes and 4.73 progressive passes. The Old Gold defender has even more impressive stats when you consider he is playing for a relegation-threatened team.

Defensively, the two left-backs are neck and neck again. The Wolves number three averages 3.24 tackles and interceptions and 4.61 ball recoveries. In comparison, Milan’s French full-back averages 2.43 tackles and interceptions and 4.86 ball recoveries.

It is certainly possible that Ait-Nouri could be the next big Wolves sale. Given he is statistically similar to Hernandez, his valuation could follow the same trend. The Frenchman is worth £50m as per Transfermarkt, and GiveMeSport have previously suggested Wolves would want £60m for their Algerian star.

Wolves player Rayan Ait-Nouri

Losing their number three would be a blow for O’Neil’s side after so many of their other stars have departed over the past two years, and they will no doubt be doing everything they can to hold onto him.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are keeping their options wide open in potentially replacing Gary O’Neil.

West Zone captain Rahane sends team-mate Jaiswal off the field for disciplinary reasons

Jaiswal appeared to be consistently sledging South Zone batter Ravi Teja

In a rare act, West Zone captain Ajinkya Rahane ordered his team-mate Yashasvi Jaiswal to leave the field for disciplinary reasons on the fifth day of the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone.Jaiswal smashed a double-century in the second innings to set up a big win for West Zone. However, on the field, he found himself at the centre of controversy. He was asked by his captain Rahane to leave the field for going overboard with sledging against South Zone batter Ravi Teja.Teja had apparently complained about the verbal volleys that Jaiswal was consistently firing at him as he was fielding close to the batter. After being spoken to earlier, Jaiswal came under fire again in the 57th over when the on-field umpire complained about the young batter’s alleged sledging. Jaiswal appeared to be animated when Rahane had a word with him and was eventually sent off. Satyajeet Bachhav came out as a substitute for him.*Jaiswal returned to the field after being away for seven overs. He was later declared Player of the Match after West Zone won by 294 runs.Asked about the incident involving Jaiswal, Rahane said after the match: “I believe in always respecting your opponents, umpires and match officials. So you have to handle certain incidents in a certain manner.”

There’s plenty to be optimistic about at the London Stadium, but there’s no denying it’s been a rocky start. West Ham still need to unleash a top-class centre-forward to perform at full throttle.

West Ham lacking forward presence

Michail Antonio might have opened his account for the season against Ipswich, but the 34-year-old has trudged through most of the campaign, winning 21% of his duels, completing 23% of his dribbles and averaging seven successful passes per game, as per Sofascore.

His ostensible successor, the 31-year-old Niclas Fullkrug, is a hulking and surprisingly dynamic centre-forward, purchased from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth £27m this summer. Alas, the German has endured an injury-hit start to life in London, yet to score, yet to assist.

Jarrod Bowen’s days of regularly moonlighting at number nine appear to be over – it’s for the good of the team, you see. He’s at his most effective on the right. West Ham need to map out a plan. And they are doing so, in fairness.

According to Football Insider, whose claim is made in conjunction with ex-Irons scout Mick Brown, Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis is on the club’s radar and could be targetted this January.

He signed for Benfica in an initial €18m (£15m) deal this summer and has started life in Portugal with aplomb, but you may know him better from last Friday when he silenced England at Wembley.

Vangelis Pavlidis' performance vs England

The man who toppled the long-standing Lee Carsley dynasty. Maybe not, but scoring a brace against England in their own backyard is still a mean feat.

Carsley’s experimental outfit fell flat, unravelled like a badly-wrapped present. Greece, though, were excellent and fully deserved to come away with three points and establish themselves as table-toppers in their Nations League Level B group – it’s a group that the Three Lions are expected to escape from.

Pavlidis’ clinical performance put his name on the map, opening the scoring after half-time with a fine strike past Jordan Pickford. Jude Bellingham, England’s go-to talisman, exploded into a roar of rapture after restoring parity late on, but the Greek forward left Wembley bewildered and beleaguered, firing true in the dying embers to score a historic victory.

West Ham’s technical director Tim Steidten is bound to have noted the display, with the Hammers looking at the 25-year-old earlier in the year, before ultimately moving to sign Fullkrug.

While West Ham’s new focal frontman has all the qualities in the locker to forge a successful career for himself under Lopetegui’s leadership, there’s little question that Pavlidis would bring a contrasting skillset to potentially propel the side back into the limelight.

Why Vangelis Pavlidis would be perfect for West Ham

Pavlidis joined Benfica from Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar this summer, and he’s started his life in Liga Portugal very well indeed, carrying over the prolific edge that had seen him plunder 33 goals and six assists across 46 appearances in all competitions last term.

He hasn’t quite hit the same vein of form for Benfica, though has notched two goals and two assists apiece over nine games.

This isn’t the most mesmerising of hauls, for sure, but his underlying metrics accentuate the wonderful skillset, with an average of 2.3 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per league match, as per Sofascore, while only missing three big chances, highlighting an efficiency in front of goal, albeit not striking with the greatest consistency – it’s no wonder he’s been described as a “real handful” by journalist Antonio Mango.

As per FBref, the 6 foot 1 striker actually ranks among the top 11% of positional peers across divisions similar to the Portuguese top flight for goals scored, the top 8% for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for passes attempted, the top 19% for progressive passes, the top 11% for progressive carries and the top 18% for tackles per 90.

Quite the multi-functioning player, eh? His dynamism could be the missing ingredient at the London Stadium, complementing the clutch striking of Fullkrug and raising the skillsets of other attack-minded players – like Mohammed Kudus.

Kudus hasn’t enjoyed the finest start to the season, but he’s still one of the most dangerous wingers in the Premier League. Pace and power in his strides, the Ghanaian was called “different gravy” by The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas. It’s quite an apt comment, to be honest.

The crux of Kudus’ problems is that he’s not clinical enough, only posting one goal and one assist across nine fixtures in all competitions this season, also averaging just 0.7 key passes per Premier League game.

He needs to raise his game. However, by adding Pavlidis into the equation, this high-class footballer could hit the purple patch that is within his capability, breezing past his opponents and getting himself into more positions of promise than he has achieved recently, for Pavlidis’ creative spark and all-encompassing nature could elevate his game.

West Ham have already profiled Pavlidis and must consider fixing their full focus on him in 2025. He’s only 25 and could be the long-term solution to the never-ending question surrounding number nine in east London.

Strengthening Royals' thin batting on Sangakkara's mind for next season

Royals’ director of cricket looks forward to “grooming” Parag to become “an early-middle-order player rather than just a death hitter”

Sidharth Monga30-May-20222:29

Sangakkara – ‘Need to groom Riyan Parag into an early middle-order player’

One of the hallmarks of Rajasthan Royals’ season – apart from both the orange and purple caps going to their players – will be how cleverly they made do with a thin batting line-up, which had R Ashwin bat at No. 7. They used him as a pinch hitter and as a pinch anchor too, and even retired him out once to maximise the death overs once his job was done.In the coming season, though, their director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara will want more from the specialist batters other than Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson, especially the young Riyan Parag. He said after the final on Sunday that he would actively work towards it.Related

Sanga on Buttler: 'I can't remember anyone batting this well in the IPL'

“I think we have got a lot of improvement to do in all areas really,” Sangakkara said at the post-match press conference. “If you really take our batting, we had huge contributions from Jos, contributions from Sanju, and Shimron Hetmyer in the early stages. Riyan and Devdutt [Padikkal] played well in patches, but in terms of overall performance, we need a little bit from the support-role players.”I think Riyan Parag has got a huge amount of potential, and I think we have got to work him into a higher batting number by the time we come in next season. I look forward to grooming him to become more of a kind of an early-middle-order player rather than just a death hitter because I think he is so accomplished against spin as well as pace.”I think overall we have the purple cap, the orange cap, and as a team, we played extremely well. And I thought from the time we started the tournament to now, the guys have put in an amazing effort, so I am very, very proud.”Parag ended up facing just 132 balls in 14 innings this IPL. His longest innings was his 31-ball unbeaten 56 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Pune. During the season, they tried to shore up the batting by playing Daryl Mitchell and James Neesham, but that upset their bowling balance. Eventually, they went with their five best bowlers, leaving the batters to adjust. That perhaps left Buttler with the extra responsibility to bat through, which in turn left the extra onus on Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal to bat quickly so that Buttler’s slower starts could be accommodated.Asked about his own year, Samson told Star Sports at the post-match presentation: “The role was completely different this year with Jos playing 20 overs. All batters had a different mindset to play around him, play different situations, different strike rates, and take on the bowlers. Some nice 30s, 40s, 20s, but [there’s a] lot to learn more.”R Ashwin was used a pinch hitter and a pinch anchor for Royals to shore up their batting•BCCI

Buttler, though, refused to put his slower starts down to the thin batting. Asked if he was left with the dual role of batting long and batting quick, Buttler told Star Sports: “Not at all. In good teams, you have a lot of trust in everyone. I have huge trust in everyone else. We played fantastic all season and came short today. I react to my own game. If the game asks me to be aggressive or hang in, I trust myself to make the right decision.”That said, Jaiswal and Samson had made up for it with their quick starts to have Royals at 59 for 1 in eight overs in the final, which Sangakkara thought was a good base once they had made the surprising decision to bat upon winning only their fourth toss of the season.”We were debating whether to put them in first as well,” Sangakkara said. “By the time we arrived at the ground, we looked at the pitch, it was pretty dry. And we thought it will get slower and maybe offer a little bit of turn for our spinners. So we expected to get about 160-165. We were really well-set in our batting innings: 70 for 1 at halfway mark. Then Sanju got out and then Hardik [Pandya] came on and bowled some beautiful overs and we let Gujarat back into the game.”With 130, you need a bit of luck and some quick wickets in the powerplay. Yes, we did get two; unfortunately, we didn’t get [Shubman] Gill in that first over and the [asking] run rate never went over seven. So it was always going to be tough.”Sangakkara was full of praise for his bowlers, but expected Ashwin to push himself more come next season. “Ash has done a great job for us,” Sangakkara said. “Even for Ash, being a legend in terms of what he has achieved on the cricketing pitch, there will be a lot of improvements and thinking to do, especially with his offspinner and bowl more of it.”

Moyes wanted to sign £47m star to replace Rice, but West Ham signed Alvarez

da marjack bet: Heading into the international break, West Ham sit 12th in the Premier League, having accrued eight points from their opening seven games, winning twice, drawing twice, and losing three times.

da wazamba: Julen Lopetegui wants to make the Hammers a more ball-dominant side, but so far, his side have averaged just 45.4% possession in the league, the sixth worst in the division, with an 83.0% passing accuracy (11th out of 20).

Many of West Ham’s issues stem in midfield, with a lack of mobility, a lack of progressive passers in deep areas, and an overall mindset that still seems better suited to Moyes’ style of football than Lopetegui’s

West Ham's midfield woes in 2024/25

West Ham has set up with a double pivot and often one number ten this season. Most commonly, that has been Guido Rodriguez, Tomas Soucek and Lucas Paqueta, who have started as a midfield trio on four occasions in the Premier League already in their seven games played.

The other midfielder in question is the original Declan Rice replacement, Edson Alvarez, who was signed from Ajax in 2023 for around £35.4m, as the Hammers looked to rebuild their midfield with the loss of Rice.

Declan Rice with the Europa Conference League trophy for West Ham.

Alvarez made 42 appearances for the club last season, scoring two goals, providing two assists, and contributing to nine clean sheets in his 3,155 minutes played.

Yet, in the new term, the Mexican has underperformed, notably being sent off in the League Cup defeat to Liverpool last month.

Edson Alvarez for West Ham

Things could have been very different, as there was another name on David Moyes’ list to replace Rice, a player who has just earned a big move to Bayern Munich this summer and has been going from strength to strength.

Who West Ham wanted to replace Rice

Before the Hammers signed Alvarez, West Ham were quoted a £60m fee for ex-Fulham midfielder, Joao Palhinha, according to GOAL, as they were searching for their Rice heir.

Due to such a high fee, West Ham began to look elsewhere, going through some other names before acquiring the Mexico international.

Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Palhinha has since gone on to secure a big move to Bayern, joining the German giants for a deal worth around £47.4m. The Portugal international has slowly settled into life in Germany, making six appearances in all competitions, playing 154 minutes of football, and contributing to three clean sheets.

But, if we cast our minds back to one of his best seasons yet, 2022/23, how does he compare to the aforementioned names?

Palhinha, described as a “destroyer” by Statman Dave, clearly shows his defensive qualities in these metrics, making a crazy 4.29 tackles per 90 during the 2022/23 season for Fulham, nearly double both Alvarez and Rice. He also made more blocks, and only 0.10 fewer interceptions than Rice, which shows the type of midfielder Palhinha is.

Alvarez, however, did produce better passing metrics, making the most passes into the final third, the most progressive passes, and having the best pass completion. This could have been part of the decision to go for the Mexican, as he could provide those on-ball qualities closer to what Rice offered to the side.

Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha.

This season, West Ham have already conceded 11 goals, eight of these coming from “open play”, and a midfield option like the Portuguese could have offered the Hammers much more protection in front of their backline, thus minimising chances for the opposition, and perhaps even reducing their chances conceded.

It’s safe to say we can file this as one that got away for the Irons.

ECB announces departure of James Taylor from head scout role

Former England batter had been involved with men’s team selection since 2018

The reorganisation of England men’s coaching and selection structures has continued with the ECB announcing the departure of James Taylor from his role as head scout.Taylor, the former England, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire batter, joined the ECB in 2018, working beneath national selector, Ed Smith. When Smith’s role was made redundant in 2021, Taylor moved into the scouting role, assisting head coach, Chris Silverwood, with selection. The arrival of Rob Key as England men’s managing director has already seen a number of changes, with separate head coaches appointed for red- and white-ball cricket, and the return to selection by a panel.Key is reportedly keen to bring back the national selector role, but is understood to be considering splitting the position by format, too. The Daily Mail last week linked former England batter Ian Bell with the job of Test selector.”James Taylor has been a great servant to English cricket both as a player and an excellent administrator over the past four years,” Key said. “He has a deep passion for the game and is attuned to the current demands of a modern cricketer, having played with and against most of the England set-up and pathway players.”Everyone at the ECB would like to thank James for his hard work and dedication and wish him well in the next chapter of his career.”

Taylor, 32, was forced into retirement in 2016 after being diagnosed with the heart condition, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, having played seven Tests and 27 ODIs for England. He said: “It has been an honour to hold the position of selector for three years and the last year as head scout.”I would like to thank everyone at the ECB for all their support. We have had some fantastic highlights during that period that I will remember forever. The time is right for me to explore new opportunities, and I’m excited about what lies ahead.”
