Aston Villa agree £6m deal to sign another new star; Unai Emery was key

da bet sport: Having already sealed the arrival of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund, Aston Villa have now reportedly agreed a deal to sign a defensive reinforcement from La Liga.

Aston Villa transfer news

da dobrowin: As Malen arrived, the man who he replaced headed for the exit door with Jaden Philogene completing his mid-season move to Ipswich Town just a matter of months after rejoining Aston Villa from Hull City. Those in the Midlands will hope that the more experienced Malen will have the desired impact that Philogene failed to make on his return.

Borussia Dortmund'sDonyellMalen

Unai Emery recently spoke about what the Dutchman will add to his side, telling reporters: “He’s always close to the attacking third, close to getting into the opponent’s box to score goals and assists… We will need one player like him as well trying to threaten the opponent in-behind.”

Those behind the scenes at Villa Park have wasted no time admiring their new signing, however, with their focus instantly set on welcoming further reinforcements this month.

Forget Rogers: Emery could soon unleash Aston Villa's next Grealish

Aston Villa could be close to unearthing their next Jack Grealish…

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 18, 2025

Names such as Oscar Mingueza have been mentioned and right-back seems to be the route that the Villans are going down, but it may not be in pursuit of the Celta Vigo man.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa have agreed a deal worth €7m (£6m) to sign Andres Garcia from Levante this month. The right-back has reportedly already spoken to Emery and, therefore, accepted Villa’s proposal as Relevo reported and Romano relayed.

The Levante ace looks set to give Matty Cash plenty of competition for that right-back role, that’s for sure, in a battle that could end with the latter watching on from the bench.

Garcia can push Cash all the way

Just 21 years old, Garcia very much seems like the future of Aston Villa’s right-hand side where he could take over from Cash sooner rather than later. The Poland international remains one of few weaknesses in Emery’s side and if they want to set their sights on Champions League football for the second season running then welcoming a replacement at this stage is no bad idea.

As the stats show, Garcia has had little trouble adding an attacking impetus to the current Levante side in a show of creativity that will only benefit the likes of Ollie Watkins and new signing Malen.

Compared to Cash on the defensive front, meanwhile, the 21-year-old has also impressed. His ability to recover possession is something that should help Emery’s side maintain their dominance and remain on the front foot in the remainder of the campaign.

Whilst top four is currently a little out of their reach, Villa’s January signings could quickly bridge that gap in the Premier League.

David: 'I've been wanting to do something like this for a while now'

Rohit Sharma says while Pollard’s are big shoes to fill, David has got “lot of ability and so much power”

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Apr-20232:36

Moody: David has shown the IPL that he’s a deadly weapon

Tim David has played only 16 games for Mumbai Indians, but he has already shown glimpses of the power-hitting ability that had made Kieron Pollard one of the stalwarts of the IPL. In the 1000th game of the IPL on Sunday, David went 6, 6, 6 off the first three balls of the last over as Mumbai became the first team in the league’s history to chase down a 200-plus total at the Wankhede Stadium. With Pollard now taking up a new role as Mumbai’s batting coach, can David fill the void left by him as the team’s finisher?”Look, it’s big shoes to fill,” Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai captain, said at the post-match presentation. “Obviously, Polly has done it for so many years and we have won so many championships with his performances. Tim obviously has got a lot of ability, as you saw today. He has got so much power and at the back end, it helps. When you have that kind of power, the bowler is always thinking, so that’s good to have.”When David walked out to bat, at the fall of Suryakumar Yadav’s wicket, Mumbai needed 61 off 26 balls. David alone smashed 45 off 14 balls, including five sixes, to finish the chase with six wickets and three balls to spare. It was Mumbai’s fourth victory in eight games this season.Related

Jaiswal vs Archer: a ballad of fusion music and pure vibes

“Yeah, we needed a result,” David said. “So, it’s an amazing feeling, the crowd was going crazy for us. So, when we get up and flying at the Wankhede, there’s no better feeling.”We’ve probably not played our best game for the last couple of matches. To see how the boys went about it, it’s awesome for us and to see how excited the boys are, it feels really good.”Whenever Trent Boult, Sandeep Sharma and Jason Holder missed their lengths at the death, David put them away. He was particularly severe on Holder, taking him for 25 off six balls. After the match, David said that the plan was to go after every bowler.”Everyone had to be targeted,” he said. “But it was good batting conditions today. So, tough job for the bowlers there, but personally I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a while now and been hungry to get a result for the team. So, it feels great.”It was a little bit sweaty, so I was kind of getting out of the crease and trying to close the angle down [against Holder] and just react to wherever the ball is bowled. At that point, it just had to be good shots and try and hit the middle of the bat.”

Emery could sign "incredible" £41m Pau Torres upgrade for Aston Villa

da 888casino: Whilst Aston Villa fans will still be pleased Unai Emery is at the helm, considering the Villans are playing Champions League football as a result of the Spaniard’s expertise, they will want to see some improvements on the pitch in 2025.

da realsbet: Notably, the Villans have leaked a worrying amount of goals in the Premier League so far this season, with a hefty 31 strikes conceded from 19 clashes.

To add further context, even Ange Postecoglou’s wildly gung-ho Tottenham Hotspur have given up fewer goals at 29, meaning this January could see the Villans strengthen defensively.

Aston Villa could go back in for "incredible" star

Ever-growing concerns surrounding their defensive record could see Emery’s men go in for Benfica star Antonio Silva this January, with TEAMTalk reporting last month that the Villans were keen on adding the Portuguese centre-back to their ranks.

With it also being reported by the Daily Express that fellow Premier League side Newcastle United are set to miss out on Silva, who has his mind allegedly set on a switch to Juventus, the time could now be right for Villa to plea with the promising 21-year-old to relocate to England instead.

FC Porto's Danny Namaso in action with Benfica's Antonio Silva

After all, the young defender has been labelled as “incredible” in the past by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, with Emery perhaps viewing the 6 foot 2 ace as a considerable upgrade on a declining Pau Torres.

Torres limped out of Villa’s last match versus Brighton and Hove Albion, but was still at fault for the Seagulls’ opener on the day, as alternatives are now potentially sought after to replace the ex-Villarreal man.

What Antonio Silva would offer Aston Villa

Just one glance at Silva’s numbers in the Portuguese top-flight this season shows off many of his standout traits, with the 21-year-old winning an impressive 5.6 total duels on average per league clash.

Torres falls way short of this number back in the Premier League – with just a paltry 2.8 total duels won on average in contrast – meaning Silva could potentially bully attackers more effectively than the Spaniard if he settles in well to his new location.

Antonio Silva for Benfica.

Moreover, his passing statistics playing out from the back will further make him a desirable pick-up, with 70 accurate passes managed per league appearance during 2024/25 to date.

Accelerating a move for Silva is even more crucial when you consider the fact Torres did come off with a nasty injury against Fabian Hurzeler’s men, leaving a gap in the starting XI that could be filled by the likes of Diego Carlos and other names who Silva also betters in their head-to-head numbers.

Looking at the table above, Silva betters both Ezri Konsa and Diego Carlos in a number of different areas, with the Benfica man boasting more ball recoveries than the centre-back pairing, on top of also winning more tackles and interceptions.

Whilst it obviously would take time for the Portuguese youngster to get up to speed with the Premier League, Villa should still pursue this move with a fee around the region of £41m expected to be satisfactory, after he was once touted for a move around the £80m mark last summer to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United.

Benfica defender Antonio Silva.

Villa supporters will want Torres’ recovery to go well, but with the defensive woes that keep tripping their side up, going in for Silva this January seems to be the most logical move to make.

Super Kings to wait for Stokes to be '100% ready' before using him as a bowler

Chennai Super Kings will wait for Ben Stokes to be “100% ready” before using him as a bowler this season as he continues to manage a long-standing knee injury, team coach Stephen Fleming confirmed.ESPNcricinfo revealed this week that Stokes would start the IPL as a specialist batter following a cortisone injection in his left knee ahead of the season, since he wants to ensure he is fit enough to play a full part in this summer’s Ashes series as England Test captain.Stokes, who cost INR 16.25 crore (£1.6 million approx.) at December’s IPL auction, made 7 off six balls on his Super Kings debut on Friday night, batting at No. 4 in their defeat to defending champions Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.Related

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Fleming said Stokes was “progressing well” and added that he had taken steps towards full fitness in the month since England’s second Test in New Zealand.”He had a fair amount of time off between the last Test match and getting here, and he had some medical work done on the knee,” Fleming said. “We want to do the right thing by Ben and make sure that he’s 100% ready to go.”He’s not there yet and that includes bowling form. We are working closely with him, but he’s making really good progress. We’re really happy with what he’s done so far and I think he feels pretty positive about the progress he’s made.”Super Kings only used five bowlers in their defeat on Friday night, with Moeen Ali and Shivam Dube both unused. They will soon have Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana available after international duty, and Fleming said that Stokes’ return to fitness would provide a boost later in the season.”That’s another addition to the side, when he starts bowling,” Fleming said. “We’ve got some good players to come in, and we’ve introduced some players today, so it’s not all bad.”

Imagine him & Cunha: Wolves lodge enquiry to sign Raul Jimenez 2.0

da mrbet: Wolverhampton Wanderers are finally up and running in the Premier League as their Boxing Day victory over Manchester United moves them out of the relegation zone.

da realsbet: Goals from Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-Chan gave Vitor Pereira his second win in as many matches since taking over from Gary O’Neil recently.

With momentum building, the Old Gold will be looking to secure positive results against Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest, who they face in their next two matches.

If Pereira can avoid defeat against the two clubs, then the Molineux side will head into the January transfer window full of confidence, no doubt about that.

There are still plenty of improvements to be made and Pereira will be keen on bringing a few of his own transfer targets to the Midlands in order to stave away the threat of relegation.

One area that he is already looking at bolstering is his attack, especially as it appears the 56-year-old is lining up a move for a current Bundesliga striker…

Wolves showing interest in German international striker

According to BILD (via Sport Witness), Wolves are looking at Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Tim Kleindienst ahead of the winter transfer window opening next week, having already made an enquiry after asking for information about the striker.

Everton are the other side who are interested in the player, and there could be a shootout between both sides with regard to who makes the first move for the German.

Gladbach managing director Roland Virkus has already claimed that there have been requests for his star player, saying: “Of course there are requests, that’s completely normal if you perform well. But we don’t want to let any of the top players go because something is happening here.”

Might a big enough bid from Wolves convince the Bundesliga side to sell Kleindienst, however? As the Old Gold could do with more firepower up top ahead of the second half of the season.

Why Tim Kleindienst could thrive at Wolves

If it weren’t for the goals of Cunha this season, Wolves would be in serious trouble. Across 18 top-flight games throughout the 2024/25 campaign, the Brazilian has netted ten goals along with grabbing four assists.

Along with his effectiveness in front of goal, Cunha has also created a staggering 11 big chances for his teammates, while averaging 1.9 key passes and succeeding with 2.1 dribbles per game in the league.

The former Athletico Madrid star has delivered the goods for the Old Gold, demonstrating his all-round ability as he has usually been deployed in an attacking midfield role.

This could see him playing directly behind Kleindienst should the German international centre-forward make the move to the Midlands next month.

Having netted nine goals and grabbed five assists in just 15 Bundesliga games, it is evident that the 29-year-old is in the form of his life for Gladbach.

Last term, he scored 14 times, proving that this season isn’t just a one-off and there is no doubt the experienced “leader” – as hailed by manager Gerardo Seoane – could add something different by leading the Wolves’ attack.

This term, he has formed a devastating duo with Franck Honorat which has been praised by analyst Adam Khan, who said on X:

“Is there a more underrated attacking duo in world football than Tim Kleindienst & Franck Honorat?

“Compliment each other so well, play to each other strengths, & seem to have a telepathic understanding for one another’s position on the pitch!”

Tim Kleindienst

Honorat has tended to play out wide, linking up well with his elder teammate and this sort of dynamic duo could repeat itself at Wolves, with Cunha acting like the perfect foil for the four-cap German striker.

In yet more good news for the Molineux faithful, Kleindienst is also extremely similar to a former striker who endeared himself to the supporters during his five seasons at the Old Gold – Raul Jimenez.

Tim Kleindienst could be the next Raul Jimenez

The Mexican forward emerged as something of a cult hero during his time with Wolves, scoring a total of 57 goals in all competitions between 2018 and 2023.

Despite a frantic start, his final few seasons were disrupted by injury problems, and he was subsequently sold to Fulham in the summer of 2023 for a fee of just £5m.

Raul Jimenez

Considering the form he has shown for the Cottagers of late, this has turned into a bargain of epic proportions. Given how much of an impact he had at Wolves, if Pereira signed a player who was similar to Jimenez, then hopefully he could replicate the antics of the Mexican striker.

According to FBref, Jimenez is the third-most comparable player to Kleindienst across Europe’s top five leagues, with the likes of Kai Havertz and Marcus Thuram also similar to the Gladbach sensation.

Indeed, the pair have registered similar statistics in their respective domestic leagues this term with regard to goals and assists (13 vs seven), shots on target per 90 (1.36 vs 1.26), total shots (43 vs 38), shot-creating actions per 90 (three vs 2.02) and touches in the opposition penalty area (79 vs 72).

These statistics indicate that the duo offer the same threat going forward, with both generating plenty of scoring chances for their teams while working their way into the opposition penalty area on a regular basis.

Not just content with offering a threat in the final third, Kleindienst has also shone defensively in the German top flight this term.

When compared to his positional peers in the league, the striker ranks in the top 2% for clearances (1.77), the top 9% for aerial duels won (3.96) and the top 5% for blocks (1.36) per 90 in the Bundesliga.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It appears as though the player has all the required attributes to shine in the Premier League. An excellent touch in front of goal, the ability to create chances for others while also being able to contribute defensively, Kleindienst sounds like the perfect signing for Pereira to make next month. That’s a certainty.

Porém a arbitragem anulou o lance alegando impedimento.

O argentino seria responsável pelas duas chances derradeiras do Tricolor.
